do the college students really need a Cell Phone?

I found an ongoing interesting discussion on the net the other day whether cell phone is a necessity to college students who are in straitened circumstances?
In other words, should a student own a cell phone while receiving economic supports from government or from others?
What is your opinion?

Although I don't think it's a necessity as such, I do feel that it's an important thing to own in this day and age. My daughter is at college and I support her, without a mobile phone I wouldn't be able to call her if she was late or she couldn't phone me if she was in trouble so I do think it's quite an important item to have.

I know a lot of kids just talk and play with their cell phones, but to me, its also a safety device. With all the violence in the world, and recently in America on a college campus, I insist that both of my kids (20 and 15) have cell phones, keep them charged up, and with them at all times. In case they have an emergency, they can call for help. If I have an emergency, I can let them know what's going on.

Yes, I think it is good to have. If you think it costs too much, buy them a prepaid phone. That way if they talk too much they will have to buy more minutes, that is if you are concerned with them using too many minutes and running up a bill.
I believe it is fine if the student is using scholarship money to pay for the phone, if that is what the scholarship was to be used for. For example, some are only for "tuition only" others are for "books, room and board, and other expenses." Now I know people use their money on other things such as buying a car, getting food, etc. If the student and family think that a mobile is a good way to spend the money, then I think that's okay.

well oddly enough my hubby and i were asking ourselves the same question, but this time it was for our daughter who goes to high school...we decided to gift her one at christmas time and now are rather regretting that decision...
on one hand it was a good idea because her new school is quite a distance away and well in the big city, one never knows, but on the other hand, she is on the phone almost all the time and its so annoying!

Why not? Their parents still need some way to get ahold of them, and they are important for personal security.
I know here in my city, most of the payphones have been vandalized and not replaced, so if one needed to make a phone call they may have to travel several blocks to find a working phone.
