What can I do with my old engagement ring?

I have an engagement ring. Obviously I was previously engaged, many years ago. My ex does not want the ring back so what do I do with it?
I have the receipt, its 18 carat white gold/diamonds and cost about $5,000 dollars so I don't really want to just give it away!
Any suggestions welcome...

Are you attached to it or does it bring back bad memories? I'd suggest either keeping it or having it put into a new setting if it holds bad memories for you. You could look into selling it privately, or through a reputable jeweler but don't bother with pawn shops.

I am neither attached to it or particularly disturbed by memories attached to it. I am fairly neutral in my attitudes to it. I suppose I would like to realise its value but I accept that this is almost impossible due to market restrictions so failing this I would like to use it as a force for good in the world, give it to charity auction or perhaps pass it on to someone who needed it, my husband's friend is engaged and has no ring.

You can sell it you can take it back to the store and trade it in for something you like, you can melt it down and make a ring or a necklace you like.

people who work with precious stones and metals are highly skilled and it would cost a fortune to get the ring made into something else...the saying "diamonds are a girls best friend" is no true really because if you have a ring like that you cannot realise anything near to its value.

You get nothing for second hand rings or at least, an insult of an offer. Different if you had a single 18 carat white diamond on its own! haha
How about getting it re-set into a brooch or a pair if earings. Something decorative?
If you got to the engagement level you must have some happy memories of your time together so wear the new jewelry with happiness.

I purchased my antique engagement ring from Artdecodiamonds.com Suzanne was wonderful to me and gave me the highest price for my old diamond and jewelry.

I would sell it. It was a long time ago and they money could come in handy. Pay so bills buy something you really wanted. I guess you can go to a pawn shop but probably won't get much there or list it on e-bay or craig's List. Maybe you have local classified to list it on. Anything used you are unlikely to get full value for though. Sounds like a nice ring! If your not in a rush just list it around for a decent price and wait for the right buyer. Good Luck!

A few thought on what you can do with the old ring is keep it for a future child to use. My husband and I used my mom's old engagement ring for my own which meant a lot to me since it was the one from my dad. Or you could try you sell to a jewlery store that buys rings for top dollar.

I would not keep it. I do not like the things which reminds me on the past. If it is a valued ring I would sell it.

Why don't you sell the ring or if not, have the gold melted and ask the jeweler to make it a pendant, brooch or another form of jewelry? It really depends on what do you want to do with your old engagement ring. If doesn't have any sentimental value, sell it and use the money to buy something you really want. :)

I have the same problem. I was engaged about 5 years ago and have this ring that i can do nothing with. If i sell it i get little money, if i keep it i cant use it.
And on top of that i have found the love of my life, and cant afford to buy her a ring :( SO im totaly screwed :P
Any ideas?
