If I am going to be drinking a soft drink during a meal (rare), I prefer to drink something on the bitter, rather than sweet side - so chinotto (like an Italian coke, but bitter) is perfect for me. An other chinotto fans out there?

I have never heard of Chinotto. I am not much of a bitter drink fan, but my husband would love it. He is also like you and would choose a bitter drink with a meal before a sweet one. I would give it a try though. I'll try anything once.

My goodness...I never heard of chinotto and don't recall seeing it around here in my neck of the woods...I like quinine..it's both sweet and bitter a bit...my great-grandmother swore by the quinine in it and said there were a lot of health benefits from it...so maybe chinotto's the same?

Wow I thought quinine was a very strong medicinal herb, which, if taken in large doses could actually cause harm. I think it comes from the bark of a tree...whereas chinotto is actually the name of a bitter sweet citrus fruit which grows in Italy from which the drink is made. Pyewacket, if you like bittersweet things, try chinotto if you get the chance - maybe you would find some in an Italian deli? Here it is sold in some supermarkets, as Coca Cola has a version it makes in Australia.

Pyewacket - I did some research and found out quinine is an ingredient in tonic water and in Canada, quinine is an ingredient in the carbonated chinotto beverage called Brio. So there you go, there is a connection between quinine and the chinotto drink!

Hi joey - it's not a "pull a face" kind of bitter. It's a pleasant kind of bitter, if that makes sense. Makes a change from the overly sweet soft drinks.

I don't like bitter drinks, I even sweeten my coffee until its barely bitter. I don't even like nuts because they are too bitter for me - well true nuts anyway. Give me something sweet any time - or water - and if I'm saying water, you know there's NOTHING else!

Hi ElicBxn - oh I love a bit of both...sweet and bitter - it really depends on what I feel like at the time. Water is best for thirst though, that's for sure.

My husband is half italian, he somehow introduced me to chinotto some time ago. Sorry i'm not really a big fan, but I enjoyed it while it lasted :). I still like the regular soda or much better rootbeer. or more better i should try to avoid drinking soda, you know its bad for your health.
