And The Heat Index Makes It Feel Like....Do We Really Need To Know This?

Right now here in the good ole "baked" apple of NY, we're experiencing our first true heat wave which is to last for awhile...Okay folks,...It's HOT..and also the humidity is now rising too...So it's bad enough that it's hot, but then the news media makes one feel even worse since they just HAVE to add the heat index...so say it's 95 degrees...that's hot enough...but gee, then we're told that the heat index makes it feel like 105...yeesh...thanks news media I really wanted to know that They do the same in the winter time as well..."And the wind chill factor makes it feel like -10-degrees.. Is this a peeve of yours? Do you really want to know what the heat index makes it feel like? And how hot is it where you are?

Well I feel a bit better now. Here where I am in Florida the feel like is a 101. Oh yeah nice isn't it? Where is the wind chill factor when we want it though? That's the real question. I feel like I could melt with this heat. Even with a/c on it's hot in the house just not as hot as outside.

I sure wish I had a/c..I just have fans--but it's still a tad cooler indoors than out...I make the excuse to get out of the house and head for the library, or stores...just to cool down a bit for awhile

I don't blame you. I would too. It doesn't help that our house doesn't have any insulation. I wish it did that would make the a/c more efficient. It's one of the things on our list to do but it's so costly that we've had to wait. We also have ceiling fans which do help but when it's this hot there is only so much they can cool the house down too.

Yeah I can remember living on the eastcoast and it getting really hot for like 2 weeks, maybe 3 weeks and then going back to normal weather. Living here in Texas we have been HOT since March with the temperature rising to the mid-90's and with the heat index it putting us up over 100 degrees. Lately we have been drenched with rain and the humditity is awful that goes along with it, so it is alot of days of staying indoors and running the air conditioner on 72 degrees. Be well, my friend!

As a Texan, you do really need to know this because the heat can affect you like it feels in the heat index. If its really only 95 you can do things that you really shouldn't do at 105. Just like the wind chill factor makes it more dangerous to be out when its -10 instead of 20 above.

I'm in Maryland so my weather is unfortunatley the same as yours. Darn this lame east coast weather! I don't usually watch the news and listen to the whole heat index thing. I have HDTV so I watch those lovely HD local channels that just show you the temperature...so I know it's going to be a high and a low of ..whatever and that's it. However, sometimes I do read the weather online and see it's like "95 feels like 102" YAY!!!!!! Ugh. I hate the summer.

I'm near Chicago, and it's HOT here too. I think it's about 95 degrees. I don't know what the heat index is though. When I used to live in Wisconsin, I used the heat index and the wind chill to give me bragging rights. For example, I tell people that my high school cancelled school for a week because the wind chill was -70 (it's true, too). With the wind chill, you always get kudos for surviving the northwoods. The heat index may just be designed to make us suffer. :)

I don't mind them telling me. Actually I like knowing them. IMO I'd rather know what the temperature outside feels like than to know what it actually is. I think it's especially important for those with children and also for the elderly too. This way they know not to go out or only for a short amount of time. Here it's been pretty hot too. Right now at nearly noon it's 85 degrees and the heat index is 89 degrees. I'd imagine it will be nasty hot later. YUCK!

I like to know the heat index. It is very humid here and that raises the heat index several degrees. We got up to 93 today with heat index of 104. I'm in southern Louisiana. It's been being 96-98 with indexes up to 112. I always like to guess what the temp is with heat index.

I've heard it's very humid in Louisiana all the time..is that true? Our heat index hasn't been that much less than where you are..say 105--but like how can one tell the difference whether 105 heat index or 112--hot is hot

Check out the webstie for anderson, alaska. They did some homesteading up there this past spring....you give them $500, and I think you got 1 1/2 acres of land, you have like 20 years to build a permanent home of greater then 1000 sq ft up there and they give you back your 500 and you get the land for free. How much better can it get?

I'm assuming the "heat index" is the humidity reading? I think half the reason it "never used to be this hot" is because we were never reminded about the humidity the way we are now. Same with the wind chill factor. The other half of the reason is the prevalence of air conditioners these days. Of COURSE! it'll seem too hot outside if we're freezing inside. And all that humidity? The air conditioners pump it out of the house, into the outside air. Before air conditioners, the humidity and temperature was basically the same inside and out, so we didn't notice it as much. Men wore suits and women wore hats, gloves and stockings. And they survived. Sure, it was hot, but it was summer and it was supposed to be hot. Nowadays, people think it should be cool in summer (and warm in winter). Studies have shown that keeping the indoor temperature constant the year round contributes to human obesity. We NEED to be hot in the summer and cold in the winter if we don't want to store up fat. But you're right. We don't need to know anything more than the actual temperature. 95° is hot whether it's humid or dry out.

All I can say is thank goodness we don't have to wear the clothing we did say in our great-grandparents time....My grandmother and mother would tell me that in those days, respectable women always wore their long dresses, and underneath were slips, corsets, leggings, the works..yuk...or and yes, of course ...a lady always had to wear her gloves...

Lol...how true, we are already miserable why not just shoot us in the foot. I do like to know about the wind chills in winter, because it tells me if I need a sweater or sweatshirt under my jacket. But with heat there is nothing to do, since I can't take anything off without being indecent it would be nice if they kept the information to themselves.

You know, it's actually legal for women to go topless in Ontario. The law was challenged several years ago by a university student in Guelph, who one hot day, whipped off her shirt downtown and was arrested for indecent exposure. Now, this girl was really flat-chested so there wasn't any difference between her chest and that of a boy. But she was being indecent... Anyway, she challenged the law, and the indecent exposure charge was revoked. Since then, women have the right to go topless in Ontario. Not too many do, mind you, but the thing is, we CAN.

I was in Niagara Falls from Sunday until yesterday- it was hot there too- but at least we had the breeze from the water- I love the heat index- lol- ok I know it’s hot- but what is the temperature- I don’t care what it feels like- I know what 90 and humidity feels like- Like CRAP- Just tell me the temp!

I'm cold Pye, so cold. I have on shoes and socks, jeans, a t-shirt, sweat shirt, and a thicjk jacket and I have goosebumps. There is icy air circulating around my feet. It's bright and sunny outside but there is an icy breeze blowing fairly strong, sometimes in gusts. I could put the heater on but it's like burning dollar notes. Brr. Put a damo rolled up teatowel in the freezer and bend it when it's fruzzed, bend it around your neck..stays cool and cools your blood. Sit with a fan on you and spray cool water from a spray bottle on the bits the fan is hitting.

Mmmm....maybe I should visit you down under...I would much rather have the cold than the heat...That sounds like a good idea about the teatowel...I think my great-grandmother used to suggest in keeping cool to put a dampened cold towel around one's neck--and gee, can you imagine in her day she always had to dress like a "lady" no matter what time of the year...full length dress, corsets, leggings, shoes --the works even indoors! My how times have changed--thank goodness!

Personally, I don't need to know it, but maybe people with health issues need to know it so they can prevent themselves from suffering more than they need to. As far as temperature goes, it impacts everyone differently. Some people love the heat, while others can't tolerate it. I'm at a point in my life where I cannot tolerate either extremes in temperature; hot or cold. Because of my sensitivity to the heat, it makes no difference to me what the temperature is. I can be uncomfortable at a temperature that others can easily tolerate so I ignore that information altogether.

Basically, it is very much depend upon the temperature status of the area where buildings are close together and how much greenery including trees and grass. It also has something to do with the ultraviolet rays from the sun and in the North region where you live, the air is thick. Where I am now, in the Southern region state (Mississippi, if you not familiar with the state), it is very much thunderstorms and rain, but the temperature can often rise between 91 to 97 degrees. The humidity is high as well. Whenever it is not raining, the heat index sometimes reaches up to 100 and above.
