Do you ever hide cash under your bed or in a can in the cabinet?

When I was a kid, I'd always hear stories about my great grandmother hiding money in the mattress. And, come to think about it, maybe that wasn't such a bad thing to do in her day. It was the depression era, after all, and people had a right not to trust banks. But, I was surprised to learn that some people still do that kind of thing. How about you?
Do you hide money in your house for emergencies? Do you put it under your bed or in a can?
How would you keep robbers from finding it?

Sometimes we have some extra cash that we store in a little box. When our son was still at home, we kept some extra twenty dollar bills in there. That way if he ran short, he would ask, and we would let him have one of those. The only other cash we have stored is in a change jar on the dishwasher. When I come home I empty the change from my pocket and put it in the jar. When it gets up to around $50 we take it to the bank and get cash.

That is a very clever hiding place. I am sure strangers would not think to look there.

I don't do that. But I remember my mom used to hide things in the container full of raw rice! She says the robbers seldom search the kitchen for stuff because it's not valuable. They would search for the living rooms and the bedrooms and that's why she never put anything expensive in those places. I don't have anything of value really, and therefore I don't hide anything in my place. All my money goes to the bank, because I think I am my own robber, I would use them if I see them somewhere *laughs*.

Can't say that I've ever done that, but I agree that it isn't a bad idea. Banks really do screw you over sometimes.
My main concern is my great, great, great, great grandmother's ring that my mother gave to me. It is very important to me, so I would never want anything to happen to it. I have thought about putting it in a safe deposit box in a bank, but things get stolen there too. I don't feel safe with it in my home either. Sure I have it on my insurance but you can NOT replace something like that. It's just an on going battle that goes on in my head, haha.
I'm a very paranoid person about my things being kept up and in place anyway. lol

All my money is in my bank account. I do sometimes have some money on me, but only 20-40$
I never hide money anywhere.
My ex boyfriend use to have a lot of money on him but he never wanted to leave it at home. But sometimes he didnt have any choice and he had to leave it at home. He was hiding it in different place. Never the same.

Well this is funny, I know. Since I work and am economically independent, I don’t take any pocket-money from my husband (most wives in India do). After marriage, I told him that though I don’t take any money from him yet as his wife, it was my right to demand and his duty to give. After much mock fight, we both agreed upon the grand sum of Re 1/- daily. He gives it to me daily, even now after 10yrs, and I just shove the coin below the mattress and it keeps accumulating there. Whenever I am out of cash, I usually take a handful of coins from there. Now one day, our son discovered my hiding place by accident, he just heard the jingle! Now, every second day, he demands “his share” from the booty and mother & son just go out and enjoy!

I do keep cash at home. I just don't tell anyone about it. Getting to the bank is a hassle for me as I don't drive here. I like to have my cash handy. You never know when you will need it.

I used to hide money in our cabinet but then bad things happened so now I don't leave money at home specially when it's big amount. I put it on the bank and withdrew some if I need it.

Yes I do, I hide for some reasons, just to have a little saving and for emergency used.
But sometimes I forgot it and when ever I just clean my cabinet I saw some money hiding in the corner and I was really suprised that I have one.

When I was little, my parents already taught me to deposit my money to the bank. And I could get a little interest from it. Since I seldom need to use money, so I listened to them and I saved money in a bank. Many years later when I grow up, I suddenly realize that my saving is very useful because it's already not a little amount:)

I hide it in my luggage a small amount of money just in case I have no access to the bank. My granny used to hide money too in funny places like sewing machine. I hide it because I might have an emergency and my car is still spoilt, so access to a bank is really difficult.

i dont like to keep money in certain place like that, i rather borrow my money to other and ask the money when needed.. maybe sometime they have no money but at least we can ask for help because we already help them.

Yes, I did hide some money in certain places. But I didn't hide them under my bed. I hide it in a can! Lol... actually I did it just for a case of emergency. Not much money is kept inside it though, just for petty cash when suddenly our budget goes out of hand, we could use it. That's all. Thanks for giving me to reply here. Have a nice day to you.

I just don't think that i need to hide money. When i was a child i kept my money on a pig saving, then when i entered to university since i was away very far from home, i kept them in wardrobe..well funny thing is i just put money on that and i never think that i try to keep it from robbers and one day my roomate stole all my money, i kept quiet and everyone knew that she was the one steeling my money, not until her Mom came , she told to me to admit everything and asked her Mom to pay back money to me.that story made me more caution on how to keep money safely.

Hi,
I used to always hide my money in the house. I would put it all in a can and then hide the can in insulation in the wall. :) However, I did find the beauty of investing money and starting to let your own money work for you. The trick is that you have to have the money in the first place!
cheers,

Yes we do all the time. I even have small containers where I would throw my loose change so when I badly need money and I don't have anything on my wallet then I go count all those loose change. The biggest so far is around 2K which I used to fund an underfunded check I issued.

Yup we do it here. But way to often I raid it and there isn't anything there. LOL We have it as a savings jar. We have it hidden in different places and move it around. I doubt a robber could find it but if someone was dumb enough to rob my poor butt I don't think they would even find the few cents in my purse. LOL
