My son NEVER takes a nap for longer than 2 hours. It's rare that he'll even sleep an hour for a nap. I put him down about 1:30pm and around 2 I heard him stir but he fell back asleep. It's now 5pm and he's not awake. I've checked on him and he still seems like he is in a deep sleep. What should I do? This isn't normal!

i don't know for my 4 year old daughter sleeps about 4 hours a day...i have asked her pedia, he said that for a growing child it is normal for they are a growing individual and needs to take a lot rest, and they are too tired of the day's activity....

I once picked up my daughter at day care. She fell asleep in the car at around 5 pm and didn't wake up until 7 the next morning! She was about 2 1/2 then, and I think she was just really worn out and she was getting ready for a growth spurt. I checked on her every couple of hours to make sure she was still breathing and didn't have a fever, but other than that I left her alone. The next day she was back to her normal self. I never forgot that day though, because it scared me so bad. I guess it is normal for those things to happen now and then.

Sleep is supposed to be a way the body is recharging itself back. I think let him sleep if he wants to. Just observed him if the temperatures ok he's not dreaming or having nightmares or anything that is out of the normal. I think we are allowed to have a normal sleep for 8 hours and after that then I would be worried.

well, he normally sleeps about 12 hours at night and maybe an hour in the day. He's almost 1 year old. Thanks for your response!

I think your son is growing that's all. My son use to at that age and I think it's normal. As long as you check on him from time to time and make sure he's ok.

Well it depends too on how old your boy is. My girl is 1 year and 10 months. I put her to nap at 12:30, by 1:45 she's awake. Before she even turn 1 year I let her take a nap for more than 1 hour. Now that she's almost 2, sometimes I had to wake her up when I know she had enough nap.

There could be a number of reasons that he's napping longer. He could just be tired. Maybe he didn't sleep well last night, or maybe he's been more active today and he's just worn out. It's also possible that he's gearing up for a growth spurt. My son's 5. He generally doesn't nap at all. Today he napped for about 2 hours, he's been very active all day, running a lot and playing with the dog. When he's gearing up for a growth spurt he'll usually nap 3-4 hours at a time 2-4 days a week. It's just one of those things. I wouldn't worry too much, unless he's been hit in the head recently or something.

That is not good for his play time-he is cheating on his playing time and you need to give him some things that will keep his mind stimulated to keep awake! Children who are active are healthy, try to find him good play mates-if he doesnot have a neighbourhood of peers, then get involved in a scheduled play time with him-one hour of sleep after a meal is healthy but wanting to sleep those many hours is not good for his child development!

Sleeping is normal for health, and kids do sleep more... i think you should not get worried.

I have experienced the same thing with my little brother. He's now married and have his own kids. But this thing happened to him when he was just 3 years old. On the day it happened, my mother thought he was just tired. So she let him sleep for more than 2 hours. After 3 hours of sleeping, my mother tried to wake him up to give him milk. My brother didn't respond, he didn't wake up at all. He seemed perfectly alright, as if in a deep sleep. However my mother got panicked and called the doctor. All of us thought my brother was in a coma, and we were so worried. AFter the doctor arrived he rubbed the back of my brother's neck and found a nerve there which he then did something that woke him up. Immediately after stroking his neck, my brother did wake up. Then the doctor told us we all have phases of sleep. Sometimes when we are in the deepest phase, our soul are as if gone. So if we want to wake up a person, make sure we do it gently by rubbing the back of the neck. All of us were relieved and after that my mother used the same technique to wake us up, no matter how short or how long we have slept.

I would not be too concerned..But just keep an eye on him...They grow when they are sleeping so maybe he is going through a growth spurt. Or he might just really need this extra sleep.

First of all, don't panic. He may not have slept very well last night so that's why he is taking an extra long nap. Also, he may be coming down with something. If he is taking a nap that runs too long into the late afternoon, it's always okay to go wake him up so he doesn't spend a night wide awake. Check to see if he has a fever and if not, just chalk it up to maybe a growth spurt or some sleep he needs to catch up on.

How long has he been like this ? I believe the sleeping habit and the hours of sleep varies with the age and can change often. Children used to sleep for more than 16 hours which gradually decreases over the age and again increase when we get much older. I think there is nothing to worry until he feel something strange with his body other than that.

My baby has done that before to me. I will get him down for a nap about 1 or 2, and sometimes he will sleep until dinnertime! It is nothing to worry about, as long as you know he is not sick, just let him sleep. He will be back into things before you know it!
