Let say now you are working as a senior in a specific department and now you are being promote by your boss to a higher position (eg manager or etc) which pays you about 30% higher than your current salary. Meanwhile at the same time, there is another company from different industry offer you which can learn new things but you need to work as junior( lower pay than current salary) before any promotion..
in such situation, what would you choose and why??

I think in my age, I'd like to earn more before I grow old. As to learn something, actually I'm keeping on it, such as I already learned some French. However, I'd like to earn more from work rather than learn from it. Actually today I can't learn more from work any more. So I learn it out of my work.

I think money is a great motivation for everyone. It motivates even those who don't hate to work. So, for me higher pay is the first choice. This is because I need money to carve my life better and improve life of my family.
But, learning new things is also a good thing to upgrade yourself. But, without money nobody wants to upgrade. During learning stage you can ignore money but after a certain age you need to give importance to money. Learning never stops in our life. Every moment every phase in life is a learning.

That depends on my life style. If I needed the money to pay off a lot of debts, I would definitely take the higher paying job. If most of my debts were paid off and I could manage nicely on the lower income, then I would take that most definitely, as I love to learn new things. And learning is also a way of improving yourself. So, as I said, it all depends on the circumstances.

You are quite true. You can work for your interest without any debt. In that moment you wont care about how many money you make a day.

I will choose the higher pay because it is the best opportunity to step up to another level in my career. It is the beginning of my success and i will also have a chance to learn new thing in my new position as well. What a wonderful opportunity ! I have no better reason to refuse it.
If i would choose the new company i would have to start all over again and i don't think is a good idea.Because i have to struggle to go through a lot of obstacle before i can be promoted to the higher post.

Haha... definitely promoting to a higher position can learn more things. however it is restricted by the field involved. Anyway that is nothing wrong to choose higher pay, it gives you a better life. Thank for the comment

Umm! difficult question - i like knowledge as well as a chance to make more money - but if I was forced to chooses between the two then it would be a chance to learn new things because that will give me an opportunity to get better and higher paying job in the future.

at this moment, i would like to choose the job which offering good numerage package in salary cause the cost of every stuff at this moment getting higher and higher. my overnment said it caused of the higher price of world oil so getting impact in everything. thats why higher salary for me would be really good things and i believe that i am able to learn something new there caused its new working responsibility although its still on the same company. anyway, i already reach achivement of my reputation in my working field then why i should change it into something new which offering me lower salary than at the moment? i dont think it would be worth enough for me

Take the promotion which I have probably been working hard for, for years, and I would be still learning new things anyway.... This day and age we need higher paying jobs to survive with daily living expenses.

The pay isn't as important as the experience. If you want to learn - go with the job that offers you the challenges. Pay isn't everything and usually catches up with you over the years. We spend far too much of your time at work - it should be something you enjoy.

I believe that you can learn new things in any job.
Even the most "boring" one, it all really depends on your personalitty.
I know that people were and still are amazed at what i can find out on the most boring jobs.
So i would go with the higher pay work and i am sure i will be learning new things there too.

Good question! I think it has to do a lot with your life circumstances at the time. If I was comfortable and everything was taken care of financially, I would go with the lower paying job in shich I could learn new things. However, if I was not, I would go for the higher paying job. I think it all depends upon priorities at the time.
cheers,

That would really depend on your financial status in life and your principle in life. For me, if the new job is something that I'm really interested in and would learn a lot of new things, I would grab that job. That was what I did 11 years ago. The salaray is not that much compared to what I was earning before. But since it's the field I really wanted since college days, I accepted the job. And I did learned a lot. But if you're priority is finances, I guess, you'd choose your promotion.
This would depend on your standing in life at present.

You could choose to do any of them depending on the situation. When you are looking to gain work experience, then the money should not matter then. Especially when you just came out of school or training. After getting the experience, you could apply for a job that pays higher than the present job. But it would be more interesting and rewarding if you you have a higher paying job and the work experience at the same time.

Hi jitleongc,
This is a real easy one for me. I would choose the higher pay. With the extra money I make I could go to night school to learn new things if I want to. LOL Vicki

Take the promotion, it will boost your CV and prepare you for bigger things tomorrow! Am sure having worked for sometimes and then getting to another place as a Junior even if you may be earning more does not measure up-there is more to a job than just the pecuniary attachment!

If I were young I would choose the latter. I could learn in whatever field that I think will be useful for me in future undertaking. This could bring more advantage than just being a manager with that fixed amount of increment. In this way I could attain a higher success through effort and diligence.
If I were not young I will rather prefer to accept the higher pay offered job as I’m reluctant to make any changes in any new areas all over again.

I would choose the higher salary now that I have two little ones to support. But otherwise, I would go with the learning one. I love jobs where you get to learn and I´ve taken a lot of them! I took a pizza job because I wanted to learn to make pizza, a bartending job to learn to mix drinks and I used to work on a construction site as a first aid attendant, but since there were few injuries, I learned all about construction, pool cleaning and landscaping! And the pay was GREAT!

Well jitleongc if I was put in a situation like this I would choose to work for a higher pay because with a pay increase I would be able to do more for myself and community then if I am not making much at all. I mean you are always going to learn new things on a job like it or not because the people you are interacting with on the daily basis aren't exactly like you so they might find a new way to do something and save time and doing that thing. So seeing that my words are running short jitleongc NakitaLikely3617 is out!
