after joining mylot when i got to know about the abuse report system, i thought that i m never going to use this facility. there are fanatics, prejudiced, narrow minded, stealer etc. kind of people on mylot but i m someone who wants to keep away from all this; especially because i find that there are other alert mylot members who could and may report them to authority and also because it gives me a kind of guilty feeling. but today i just had to do it! this person was actually using offensive language for a friend of mine and i just found it so offending that without even knowing i clicked "! " option!;) but gladly i didn't feel short of guilty which i thought i would do reporting someone!
what are your thoughts about this? have you ever reported someone? what was the reason behind that? and have you ever felt something like guilt doing this? and do you think one should use it more often? or s/he must use it only when it is really necessary? i would love to know what opinion you people have regarding this reporting business!:))

I haven't use it yet, but I think I would only use it if I find someone spamming. Ppl think different, so a post that may sound offensive to me not necessarily is to other ppl, so I prefer to ignore it.

Depends .. Of course there are serious things that should be reported imediatily.. but most of cases are just differents points of view.

I was much like you; I really didn't think I would ever need to use the abuse button. But as I spent more time here, I found out that even though most of the rules are clear cut, people still blatantly and deliberately break these rules and guidelines. At first, I thought it was mean and none of my business.
But I realized that sometimes, we are involved and must make those calls. For example, I had someone answer one of my discussions by copying and pasting my EXACT question word for word over in my own discussion. I didn't feel guilty, this person was trying to get over on the system in my discussion... for what? All of 2 cents? I don't feel guilty because they were breaking the rules, regardless of what I might have felt about it.

i don't quite see why people act so stupidly!;) don't they understand that it's the easiest way to get caught? but in most cases, on my discussions, i found that there was an automatic system which deleted such responses so i just play my part by awarding a "-" to such members!:)

I did report someone myself. It was for a picture. It was a Britney Spears picture, and it wasn't her face. If someone wants adult content, there are plenty of places on the Internet to prowl for it.
If someone is posting something too crude to make you puke, there are underage MyLotters, or cruel, (racist comments for example would certainly qualify as cruel), you should report him or her. You can't trust that someone else will do that, because you are that someone else.
Unfortionately, MyLot doesn't have a program to filter loaded words or .jpg's. What MyLot does have is a user base that will look out after one another.

i didn't get what kind of picture it was?:S
yes perhaps relying on someone else isn't a virtue of a committed member but there are times that some people actually have fights on discussions and in those situations you can be sure that someone is going to report the original offender!lol by the way in my stating days there was so much craze of MLPD..aren't they still active?

Self-righteous perhaps? After all, I am doing a good thing in reporting those people who break BIG rules. They are cheating the site and ultimately all the users of whom I am one. :P

I rarely use it. The only times I have used it was because of obivious spam over and over again by one paticular member. Then one other time because a member was being very offensive to another member. So I reported them. It doesn't bother me or make me feel guilty reporting people. That is what it's there for and mylot wants us to use it. Now I don't go reporting every little thing. Only just the really bad cases.

Dear kaplya
I have reported just one member's post till now as because his post on my discussion was just not making any kind of sense and he was really very rude with his words .. and according to mylot guidelines -- whatever a member posts -- it should match with the discussion .. after report .. I found that mylot deleted that persons post .. We should not tolerate such peoples who used to enter our discussion and spoil it .. The button is mend to protect us and we should use it whenever it's necessary without any second thought.

i'm unhappy to see that this person's post, which i reported is not, deleted yet!:( mylot sometimes gets very slow with its process..i guess.. usually i find that mylot deletes irrelevant responses automatically without my even reporting them, that's why i ignore them!:)

If someone is spamming or using bad language or just insulting someone. I report it. there is no need for it and if they get banned they get what they deserve.

I've been reporting and hunting down offenders, cheaters and abusers here for the past seven months. There are times when they caught, but most of the times they are not and they still continue violating mylot's guidelines.
So I just keep on reporting them, I'll always share some spare time on hunting and reporting cheaters here..

so are you among those MLPD guys?:) i thought i have not been seeing them very active lately. it's nice to have some responsible members here who have taken up this job; that's what i rely on and that's why i think that if i don't report them, someone else would certainly do this!:)

I only had to report one person. It was so long ago I don't remember the exact thing that was written but I found it offensive and I felt good reporting the person. When it is necessary to report someone, you should do it.

Hello kaplya. In my 5 months tenure here, I only use the ! button twice. On both occasion, it was to report a cheater who copied and pasted another friend's discussions words for words.
I really didn't feel anything bad about it. I hated seeing any cheaters who are too lazy to do their own post. Another thing I detested are the spammers. I can't count the number of posters who are pasting their links on my beautiful profile. I will simply delete it as well as the poster from my list.

hi Charms:) yes these cheaters really annoy and make one angry with their copy paste job!! i don't understand why they do it at all when it's obvious that they are not going to earn much from this deed.perhaps some people don't have any common sense... or perhaps a very high one that others could never get hold of!;) there was a person on my friends' list too who posted his links about some earning sites. i deleted it after a while and then this 'friend' did me this great "courtesy" by posting them again!:P but this time i didn't wait to delete his comment.

I have never reported anyone. But, if i see anything very bad, i will surely report. We all are here to share friendships and spend some quality time. So, anybody doing bad comments should be reported.

yes i feel that bad comments do deserve a reporting!in fact, it was the the first time that i read something like this so my instant feeling was to report him. but i keep myself clean in those situation when people just post very judgmental, gender biased, prejudiced and fanatic responses..i just give a "-" in such cases..:)

I have never reported anything as offensive. If I don't like what is being posted I just ignore it. Even if in my opinion the person isn't using the best judgement I still ignore it. Honestly I've learned not to let things bother me so much in life. Happy postings.

I have not reported anyone till now.
I saw one of my friends using abusive words on my another friend, but i did'nt report him. The reason was, he was already severely punished by myLot.
He had his Star value gone down from 8 to 2 overnight. That's a drastic decrease in mylot as far as i know.
Actually, his discussion had a subject which seemed to be insulting women. That made things worser. He said to me that he did not mean, he used that subject with the intention of having fun.
I advised him to not make such experiments. He understood me and obliged.
I try to change people of abusive kind with friendly advices as much as i can, if nothing works then i would report him/her. So far, i've not reported anyone.
I believe in Gandhian principles or what they call it now-a-days as *Gandhigiri*......Hahaha.....funny term.
But i really can't live upto it 100% all the time. Seems like i'm going a bit off topic.
I shall end up here.

LOL. i guess i know which discussion you are talking about.:) it was that guy who started a discussion with some (weird) kind of sense of humor about the role of women, no?i followed that discussion on the day first but seems this discussion is gone now! i wonder how some people could find some humor or laughing elements in this sort of things.. it seems i overlooked your response in that discussion, unfortunately!:( but anyway did you read its counter attack discussion?;)
by the way do you still need help with customizing? if yes, just tell me i'll mention that in the comment section of your profile as mylot is still not letting me send it as pm...

What exactly prompted you to press the! button?
It is entirely upto you to use this option. I have not tried it ever.
