My little girl, who is four, wants a dog. We want to get her one but we don't know what kind. Our bigest problem is my son and I have allergies towards them. I would like to know of dogs that don't shed a lot or what kind of dog you would recommend. We would also have to keep him inside. I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give.

That is a tough decision..If allergies are a big problem you may not want to get a dog at all..You would have to be around several different types of dogs to see which ones you are allergic too..my husband is allergic to pomeranians..there are alot of dogs that don't shed but you still can be allergic to them..

I just figured it was their hair. Thank you for letting me know.

I have two adorable miniature poodles. One is white with black patches and the other is black. They do not shed any hair but a bit comes out when grooming. They need to have their coats clipped about every 8 weeks. When I got my first one I took him to a dog groomer and he always came back looking different to how I had asked. My friend lent me her dog grooming kit before I decided to buy my own. These days I do the coat clipping myself. I suggest you take your son to a few poodle breeders. He might not be allergic to them. There are three sizes: standard, miniature and toy. In the USA I have heard they have one extra type: tea cup. The standard needs a lot of walking every day. They have a friendly sort of personality and get on very well with people, especially children. On one side they are wonderful companions for lovely country walks they are also loving, soft and cuddly.

I am going to look into poodles. CraftyCorner gave me a link to hypoallergenic dogs and they are one the list. I like the fact that they are friendly and will get along well with my children. I'll just have to go to the pet store or a reputable dealer to make sure my son and I don't have any type of reaction. Thank you very much.

Hi there. Well you can always get one of those robotic dogs, that shed nothing but flat batteries lol... I have a pitbull, who 3 weeks ago had given birth to 10 more of them lol, at the moment we are looking for homes for these dogs and I think they would malt/loose fur as well, because there mother does. Maybe a little chuahua sheds less hair, but they are little vicious things, my grandma use to have 2 of them...

Thank you,we did try to buy her one of those toy dogs that bark walk and all that stuff. It didn't convince her. I don't care for chihuahua's because like you said they are vicious little things.

Does this make perfect sense to you? Why bring discomfort to yourself and your son? Why not switch to a Rabbit or Hamster? A 4 yr old is easily pleased. (lucky you).Switch to another and safer animal. Face up to it. A dog is a dog is a DOG. You and your son will get reactions for sure! Is it really worth being sick and uncomfortable?

CraftyCorner gave me a wonderful site to look at. It list all the dogs that normally don't cause allergic reaction. It is clearly posted that before you buy a dog to go check to see if you react to it. I plan to visit pet stores to make sure we don't have an allergic reaction. As to switching to a rabbit or a hamster those are not animals that draw any of my kids attention, I tried. I'm doing research before we decide if we will get one.

Never fear I'm here. LOL I know just what you need. My kids were the same way. We got a poodle mix and we had no problems. Our Scooter was half po0dle and half Lassa Apssa ( I cant spell it). A poodle or poodle mix would work for you. Get one from a good breeder not a pupple mill.

Thank you, CraftyCorner gave me a link where I could look at a list of hypoallerginic dogs and poodles are listed. I'll be looking at different pet store and reputable breeders. I will not buy from a puppy mill for I have seen the horid conditions those poor animals are in. I really appreicate your response.

Thank you, I was given a link to a site that list Hypoallergenic dogs and guess what different types of terriers are on the list. I'm going to look into the different types of dogs to make sure we don't have a reaction. It's going to be a process.

The best dog for those with allergies is the poodle .. they do not usually shed and my mom has one and she is full of allergies. Toy poodles are nice and like the regular sized poodle, don't shed their hair.

Poodles don't shed at all. They do need to be groomed and have their fur/hair cut. Their fur never stops growing just like human hair, and they come in different sizes. The standard is about the size of a Doberman, the teacup can fit in your hand. There are other kinds of dogs that don't send your allergies through the roof as well, non shedding types. Here are a couple of websites to help you: Dogs Considered Good For Allergy Sufferers http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/allergy.htm Hypoallergenic dog breeds - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoallergenic_dog_breeds Hope this helps.

We have a chihuahua/yorkie mix. She doesn't shed at all. You can even run your hand through and try to pull her hair out and she won't shed! She is great with kids, and only weighs 4 pounds. Yorkies are very smart dogs and easily potty/crate trained. Fair warning though...mine loves biscuits straight from the oven! lol

I was going to say poodles but it seems you already have that covered and some great sites to visit. You do realise that if your daughter is only 4 you will be doing most of the work involved in having and training a dog. You will need to train it and if you get a puppy your children might not like it thinking they are puppies too and play-fighting with them. Puppies have little but sharp teeth. All that being said, they are great fun and you will not regret it after planning correctly as you are.

Yes, I do realize I will be doing all the work. She just really likes them and always want to play with other peoples dogs. I'm going to do a lot of research before we give her a yes. Thank you
