A lot of people consider kites just toys for kids. They couldn't be more wrong. Kites are great fun to fly! I had two kites, but one got lost to the wind and Lake Michigan recently.
Depending on the wind, flying a kite can be either relaxing or very active. Either way, it settles your nerves and let's you forget your troubles for awhile.
I've never been out flying a kite that I didn't meet people. For some reason, holding a reel of kite string in your hands is an open invitation for people to talk to you. The people who talk to you are usually fun people too. Rarely do they complain, or tell you what your doing wrong... They almost always have a smile on their face.
Can you be depressed while flying a kite?

I completely agree flying kites is a wonderful way to spend a day. The last time we did it was last year. We went to visit my mother in law who had brought to rather big kite for my children and needless to say they couldnt fly them. My hubby and I had hours of fun and not once agrued lol. It was so much fun and lots of people came to have a look, not that we were doing a great job of flying them. I think it was more because we couldnt stop laughing.lol

Oh you are soooo right...everyone needs to let loose and 'be a kid' again! Not that kites are just for kids. In fact, don't the parents usually end up having to get the kite up for the kid and then turn it over to the kid?!! We went to the beach a couple of years ago and flying kites was the thing that my two teens and my one grown (age 26)son had the most fun doing! There was a gentleman on the beach who was probably in his late 50s...who was trying to get a kite up for his grandchildren. He wasn't successful so he asked my teens and son to help! All of them had the best time! We tethered them to a set of stairs for the day and had a grand time watching them!

Believe it or not, I have never flown a kite. It's something I've always wanted to try. I must put that on my list. I'm going to Newfoundland this summer, and apparently it's windy quite a lot of the time, maybe I'll try it then.

Wow, its been a long time since I've flown a kite. Our kids are getting old enough to do it now and we have a great spot to do it. Its hard to find a good kite to fly. The ones they sell for kids usually are so cheap and flimsy. Flying a kite does give you a feeling of freeness :)

Yeah, kids' kites are usually pretty bad. There are a lot of places online you can buy them... and in the beginning of springtime, you can usually find decent ones at Wally World.

The last time I flew a kite was when I was 23 years old I'm 36 now. Me and my friend decided to join folks in our neighborhood who were also flying their kites. You see in our country, we flew kites not only to relax but also to compete. What we do is we engage our kites with our opponents in some type of a "dogfight" on air. We laced our strings with crushed, powdered glass mix with some local glue and after letting the string dry in an hour,we then spring into action. What we do is we fly our kite and look for the nearest opponent and then we intentionally get our strings entangled on air with our opponent's kite, letting physics do its job, string against string rubbing or sliding against each other other (plus the powdered, crushed glass to make it deadly sharp), string gets cut and its either you or your opponent's kite loosely flying away from you, and the next thing you know all hell broke loose as almost every kid in the neighborhood wants to get your hapless kite as their trophy. Kinda what you do in the states when a baseball player hits a home run, with the ball hitting the stands and everyone dashes to get it. Its a fun thing and a great adrenalin rush specially if you win in the "dogfight". Its a bit sad when you lose, specially if you see your kite again flying (if it survives the previous mayhem...), with a kid from the next block being its new owner:)

I flew a kite during last summer vacation. But that was the time I flew one after a long gap of about 8 years.I went to my mom's place and saw guys playing around with the kites.I just wanted to fly one and got one from a guy and flew it.I felt like a small kid and remembered my childhood when we used to do all these kind of stuffs.

The last time I flew the Kite was more than 10 years back when I was doing my final years of my School. It was those days in my schools, when I go out with my friends to a common public ground near my home and flew the kites for the whole day in the weekends. We used to prepare the kites ourselves as we were well versed in the Skill of Kite preparation. We also used to have Kite matches among the other group of friends with some bet matches also. It used to be a lot of fun in the weekends and I can still remember those days.

The last time I flew a kite I was about 14 years old. It wasn't a store bought kite. At a picnic with some of my dad's co-workers, my dad pulled out a bunch of newspaper, tape, glue, string and tissue paper and proposed a contest -- to build and fly your own kite. You had to get it airborne for at least 5 minutes. For wood, you had to go into the woods and find it yourself. It was a LOT of fun.

I went to a barbecue 2 weeks ago and someone had a kite. We wanted to see how high we could get it. We used 2 spools of fishing line! Man that was fun!

Hello ParaTed,
I rekindled my childhood love of kites some years ago, when I attended a kite festival. It was simply amazing. The sky was filled with every shape and color imaginable. It was a truly remarkable experience. I haven't flown my own kite in quite a few years now. Thanks for the reminder. We always have at least some wind where we live, so kite-flying is not restricted to any particular season.

Last summer at a beach park with my boys was the last time we flew kites. I think its true. Kites are good conversation starters. I don't understand it. BUt it is a fun thing to do with or without kids.
