Buying plane tickets

When you are planning a trip by plane, do you tend to buy your tickets as soon as you know that you will be going, or do you wait until the date of the trip is closer? Are tickets cheaper if you buy them earlier or later? We are planning to go home at Christmas time, and I'm trying to decide if I should start planning now, or if I can wait a little bit longer and still find cheap tickets. I need to get them for as low a price as possible, so that we can have money to spend on gifts for our families! :)

As a rule, the sooner you buy the tickets, the cheaper you are. If you put things off until your departure date is closer, then the tickets will be more expensive. I tend to travel when my dates are flexible. I'll ask for the best date between the 13th and the 18th for example.

My friend flies to Ny from Miami. She buys her tickets months in advance of her trip. You can get better prices if you look around 2am in the morning. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest days to fly. Book your ticket online and most times save $10.00 I know people who fly for Christmas on tickets that are less than $200. round trip. I was shocked to find this to be very true. My friend is leaving Miami on a $100.00 free ticket

Thanks for the tip on the Tuesdays and Wednesdays! Unfortunately, due to the way that Christmas falls this year (the 25th is a Tuesday), work holidays, and family plans, we have to fly out on a Friday night. We're planning to make appointments with our favorite tattoo artist for the day after Christmas (Wednesday), so our flight back will probably be Thursday or Friday, though possibly on the weekend. I imagine flying on the weekend is probably the most expensive though!

For our overseas trips, I usually get them at least a month in advance, for local flights, at least two weeks in advance. The price of tickets is hard to peg; sometimes you can get them really cheap if you wait until the last minute and other times you end up paying through the nose. where are you flying to and from?

From Seattle to St. Louis. The one bad thing is that we have to fly out on a Friday, most likely, but when we come back is a bit more flexible (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday).

You could probably gfet them cheaper if you waited but especially around xmas time availability could become a problem. I'm pretty anal about getting them early so that I'm secured a set and don't have to get in a panic a couple of weeks before the trip trying to find a flight that isn't already full.

Since they are for the holidays, I would buy them now...but strangely when we bought Thor's plane tickets to Australia, they got cheaper as it got closer to time for him to fly...not sute why.

They needed more warm bodies to fill the seats if they were gonna have a big plane fly all that way? :)

i usually check airline promos usually they have discounted tickets on off season. so the best thing is make preparation ahead of time and check the airlines if they offer discounts for early purchase.

i always book my ticket well in advance since the closer the date is, the higher the price and the risk is also higher that the tickets are booked out... i am planning to go home this december as well and i already book my ticket... i got the cheapest fare... in my experience, booking earlier is always more beneficial...

In my opinion early planning is always good. I have seen that if your purchase plane tickets in advance it is going to be somewhat cheap. Last minute planning is always bad as you will surely miss something which you will be sad to realize later.

We bought our tickets ahead of time. You can usually get a better bargain. Besides if you wait until the last moment, it may be that you will get a ticket but your better half will have to go on another plane or not at all. You may have to search around though.

I think the earlier you purchase them the cheaper the airfares but that would depend on where you're going, when you're going and for how long. Now that it's off season it would be good to buy them soon before it gets closer to Xmas time as I'm sure the prices will go up.

I've both bought tickets ahead of time and way late and usually the difference is whether you go through one of those other places (like orbitz or hotwire?) or go through the actual plane site or not. Not to mention that you should look around because some planes are a lot cheaper than others. I'd start looking now. It's july, but christmas really isn't too far away. Plus you'll buy the tickets...and still have time to save up for christmas gifts.

I plan my trip atleast a month before. I reserve a seat but do not purchase a ticket. I purchase the ticket usually about a week before the flight. And not to forget that I always go for the lowest fares on the cheapest airline available. cheers !

I used to wait while the last minute to get the better offers, but i find with the fierce competition we now have, with cheaper flights basically all over the world, i will buy my ticket as soon as the decission of the trip is made. I dont know if this actually is the cheapest way of doing it, its just the way i do and i never know. For instance a friend of mine living in england asked me a couple of month ago if i would join him on a holiday celebrating his 40 birthday end of august. He bought his ticket already and living in denmark i was told what hotel they booked and where. So i went online to find a cheap offer for this particular period, but foun the cheapest offer just for the flight came to more than what my friend paid for the whole trip incl hotel and breakfast. So i decided to wait see if something better would turn up as we were getting closer to the time. As it has turned out we have had the wettest summer here for generations which mean that everybody now want to go abroad for warmth and sun, so instead of going down in price the offer i could have taken has now become 150$ more expensive than it was when i decided to wait. Grrrr
