U can definitely give some light weight distributions like Vector Linux or XFCE a try. They are specifically meant to run old computers, and in an efficient way too.

Well, actually, I looked up the ubuntu site for minimum requirements, and it goes so :
*
300 MHz x86 processor
*
64 MB of system memory (RAM)
*
At least 2 GB of disk space (for full installation and swap space)
*
VGA graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution
*
CD-ROM drive
If your system has less than 192 MB of system memory, use the Alternate Installation CD.
I feel you could give it a try, but other OSes are good too. All the best, and keep us posted about your progress.

I'd try the slim version of Ubuntu designed for older computers. It's called Xubuntu.
It's free and you can download it here: http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/feisty/release/
You just download and burn the iso image to a cd. Stick the cd in the old computer, restart it and you should get the option to install Xubuntu on your computer. Make sure to back up your important data as the installation will format your harddisk.
If you have questions consult the Ubuntu Forums, they always answer quickly.
