I was driving back home from dropping my daughter off for a sleep over tonight and a squirrel came running across the road. I tried to slow down because there was noone behind me (I live in a very rural area)but I drove right over him. I looked in my rearview mirror and he was save on the other side. He was soooo lucky I didn't hit him and I would have felt really bad if I did. My two sons were in the car too. But I was wondering what you all would do if you were driving and an animal was crossing? Would you try not to hit it if it was safe to do so? Vicki

Absolutely...why do some people hit them for sport? I guess maybe they do by the number of road kills I see...can't all be accidents. Not my idea of a fun time...hit an animal...watch it die..or lie there injured..the thought makes me shudder.
As a true blue (or green0 nature lover I will capture a spider in a glass and put it outside rather than kill it. The only things that get whacked are mosquitoes and ticks...if they invade my body...they are gonners. Oh I forgot ablout flies...I won't allow them to live in the house...for all I know they could just have been in the litter pan...and now their crawling on our food!!! Ysssh...that is an unpalatable thought...all part of my Rambo code of clean, healthy living.
Beyond that from my perspective the rest of creation has as much right to be here as I do.

Your the same as me, we take all bugs and put them outside. The only bugs I hit are the ones biting me and then I actually just try to brush them off. I agree they all have the right to live.

killing an animal wheter it was an accident or it was done intentionally is considered to be so cruel...even though they are only an animal they too have the right to live and the right to be respected like any human being, for they too are living beings..let us be fair in treating every living individual in this world..

I know what you mean. Even when I see an animal that didn't make it I try not to drive over them. It makes us sad to see them there. Last week when we were going for our nightly walk we found a bunny who was hit. It was so sad to see. :(

In Nigeria, we would delight in running over any wild animal that cuts our path as it will provide a good 'bush meat'.
Such occurences are rare though, maybe because we may have hunted and killed a greater number of them already.
Domestic animals are spared though. Most people would restrain themselves from hitting such because it belongs to someone else.

Hi,
I always try not to hit anything that may be crossing on the road. However, it will depend on the circumstances of traffic around me. If swerving or slowing down to much is going to cause an accident, then Iwill just keep going. There is no sense killing the animal and then everything in my car as well.
cheers,

I ran over a raccoon once. That sucker has nine lives because i felt the car jolted and It lived. I was so upset but i ran off into the woods.

I think that anybody with a heart would try to avoid hitting an animal running accross the street in front of you, im even sure i would do this even if there was somebody behind me. That is pure instinct. I have run a few animals down in my time as a driver, simply coz most times you do not really stand a chance, and i feel bad every time it happens, and feel just as bad for running down a squirrel as i do for a reindear.
