What is work to you? Is it only work if you don't like it? Or is work..work?

I came up with this idea as I have been spending hours and hours Mylotting. Now I know some of you Mylot..and view it as work. Work to create earnings. My question is...is it really work to you? What is your enjoyment factor?
I live with the belief that anything that I enjoy doing is not really work. So whether I am paid something from Mylot or not..this is not work because I enjoy it so much. Another example..gardening can be hard work...but it isn't work to me because..you got it...I love doing it.
My other 'work'...free lance news reporting, writing and presenting courses as a group leader isn't work either...I think you get the drift. If I could afford to I love what I do so much I'd probably do it for free...or on a sliding scale if I was independently wealthy. I love my 'work' that much. Rather like Mylotting.
Now..on the other side..doing the accounting side of my business...that is work...because it is rather fiddly and time consuming...and I don't like it. Cleaning the cat boxes...work...I don't like doing it...but share the responsibliy with hubby because we love our 5 cats and they get very cranky and vocal when their boxes are dirty. Anyway..you get the gist of where I am going.
Care to add your views on work...what yours is...and isn't. I'm always interested in hearing your perspectives...so.....click away if you choose to.

I totally agree with your perspective and that is why as time has passed I have made sure to only find employment doing things I enjoy. Life is too short to not enjoy all your time!So my theory is, to do what makes you happy. Even if what you love doing does not pay well. If that is the case, then you will just have to spend less, so that the money you make doing something you love goes further.

Hi there.
What is work to me? Let me tell you my views... Work to me is sacrificing family time and time for yourself, work is also blood, sweat and tears, work is waking up every morning at 3:30 am, kissing your family good bye and driving 45 minutes there and driving 45 minutes back after work, work is missing our childrens school items, performances and sports days, work is working hard on a 12 hour shift- 6 days a week... My husbands normal week...

Your hubby sounds like a capable, committed person and that is admirable. Your acknowledgment about my getting back to you is appreciated. I receive a lot of enjoyment, inspiration, re-framing of some of my views from those who add to perspectives discussions and repond to those before going anywhere else.
I value you input and hope to see you here again. I will check out your site and we'll chat there soon.
Best regards

You have a lot on your plate and I can hear that the workload is daunting. With a schedule like yours...it sounds like everything is work with very little play. From what you say you and your hubby are doing an admirable job in the face of of your work challenges.
Hopefully there will eventually be a way for your load to be a little lighter. Wishing you and yours bright blessings. Thank you for presenting another perspective on the discussion.

Well I guess the lark means I am a morning person and an owl means you are a night person altho I have seen owls a very few times in the day time.
and It rweally depends on the size of teh garden that has been planted for the garden on the farm was huge and that was work lol hugs and blessing

It is interesting very few gardeners I know put it in the 'work--work' catagory. You are happy as a lark outside in your garden..whereas I am happy as an owl.LOL
I assume from the fact you're coming through loud and clear that your concern about one of your postings worked out okay. Whew...I'd miss hearing from you here...but we've got it covered anyway! So we're good and happy larks and owls.

No one would work for the bit we are earning at this site. I is a play to be given some cash for participation. That is it, in now way work.
Work is a service, it is an exchange of information for a set fee, it is living off the money you have made and then living within it means. Some people work at living since they have the challenge of illness. Enjoyment normally does not enter into the work of a job. Some of us are fortunate to have employment that appeals to them. It fits and the compensation is consistent. They do not lessen your paycheck just because they can.
There is work and then there are chores. There is a definite difference. Will be interesting to see what others have to say.

Well, no - I don't see MyLot as "work". Frankly, the money is so low it just isn't worth the hours that one would spend here if that was the only reason. No I just see it as something enjoyable and fun, where I can meet new people, learn new things, and generally broaden my horizons. And if I earn a few pennies here and there - well that's all well and good. No - to me, - work is that thing I drag myself into the office to do from Monday to Friday....... that boring thing that pays the mortgage and the food and heating bills, but which I would give up tomorrow if I won the Lottery! As for the cat boxes - I have 5 cats too - and LOL - isn't it a great job?! Luckily all my cats are outdoor cats, so the only time I ever have to change one is if one of them is ill and can't go out.
Have a good day!

There's your ginger orange cat that reminds me of our two. So cute!
As I said in my post I don't see Mylot as work either...but it is agreeably enjoyable and a lot of fun.
I have worked in jobs I didn't like to pay the bills and can relate to what you say. But the essentials have to be met. Good luck with the lottery...let me know if you win!
5 cats too...nope...it isn't a great job...but you know that too or you wouldn't have said it with tongue in cheek. Hope your 5 stay healthy for a long time. We have five cats...and five litter pans and they fill up fast! But even with that the joyful, loving comfort they give hubby and me is worth it.
Cheers!

Ah--another thing I can relate too. I think anything that gives us sense of accomplishment,is creative and downright fun to do, even though it's "work" its not really since we're enjoying it...like my photography, writing, crafts, art, and yes, participating here...Then there's the other "work" which is work and not so much fun...like with me...I think most people think that as a photographer, all one does is walk around with a camera taking photos all the time...uh, nope...There's the cataloging of my photos...I'm only now scanning and digitizing my slides and had to come up with a different number ID system for the scans...While the original slides also have ID numbers...which it how I know I have exactly 21,049 slides--and it was only two years ago, that I added captions to most of my slides, especially my floral, landscape, and bird photos, by identifying them with the *gasp* Latin names for the species...yeesh...Now THAT was work..and boring as heck to do...at the moment, I've been working on a revision of my Listing of Published Photos from 1980 to 1996...I had to totally re-do it as my original list done on a PC computer can't be opened up in my Mac...and I can't, as I discovered do a simple copy/paste either...PCs and Macs don't make nice with one another..so back to doing the whole thing all over again....BORING....
Mmm...cat pans...hehe...I really don't mind doing them...I use two pans for my two cats--one uses the one pan the other the other pan...I've never seen them use the "wrong" pan--I'm not complaining about changing the pans cause it so much easier with my use of litter now...Since you do know a bit about my background, you'll remember that my mom had created a pet population problem and we had a LOT more cats....well, we just couldn't afford litter all the time with so many cats...we would've have had to buy about 200 lbs of litter a week! So know what we had to do? Tear up newspapers.. YUK...Now that was work, then every time a cat did something, had to change the pan, then lug the soiled paper in bags down two flights of stairs to the garbage room...so no I don't complain now about changing pans--LOL

Well before beginning to respond I read all the comments...we have a lot of fellow cat lovers...but quite a few have outdoor cats so no litter pan cleanings are necessary. Good to hear that you will never have to go back to the yukky newspaper routine ever again! I could see 2 pans not being too bad...but we have 5 cats...and 5 pans. Sometimes I have had allergic reactions to the dust from the litter so my hubby has graciously offered to change them most of the time. So I have one less 'work' thing on my list and that give me more time for Mylotting or other summer fun things.
I think your have done a good job of defining the difference between 'satifying work' and 'work---work.' Thanks for sharing more of your increasingly interesting career goals. May you have continued success in every area of life pyewacket...you sure have earned it!

I enjoyed reading about the more mundane aspects of being a photographer. I think, with a lot of careers, people tend forget there is a lot of "behind the scenes" work. People tend to think, of only what they can see.
I attempted to earn a living as a Realtor. I got very much the same thing...People think you just do a few showings and earn a huge commission. There is a lot more to it than that. The career didnt take off but I gained a LOT of insight into how much more goes into earning their paycheck than people realize.

To me I won't consider work as something I hate. Why should I hate work when working is the job you are doing to pay for your daily needs. With the money you buy things and with the money you survive. I like to regard work as something to be fond of, and make it creative so that I will not feel bored. This is what I think. Sorry for the opposite view in this matter. Anyway, I wish you all the best. Have a nice day.

What ever comes across to you for work, it is the work to be done!
Well, What I want to do with my full participation is for spiritual growth and healing! I am for that! Writing comes next as a part of these two and as poet writer i think above mentioned two things are really important for a person who seeks for such a thing!
Still the question remains that what kind of things will lead me for that! The overall situation since i started working for earning is not under my control! I have earned and develop things for my basic work orientation but still i am not reached to do that actually based on those things only!
BUT I AM NOT FRUSTATED OR NOT ANGRY OR NOT EVEN BORED WHAT I AM DOING RIGHT NOW... YES I HAVE TRIED OUT GENUINELLY TO ADD MY PERSPECTIVES AND INNER THINGS IN MY WORK WHETHER IT IS ACCEPTED OR NOT I HAVE NOT COMPLAINED YET! INDIAN LIVING STANDARDS FOR SPIRITUAL LIFE AND SIMPLE LIVING HIGHER THINKING PROCESSES HELPED ME OUT TO TACKLE THESE ODD SITUATION TILL THE DATE! AND THE KARMAYOGA OF GEETA HAS HELPED MR A LOT! IT IS SAID LIKE THIS:
"TO DO KARMA IS YOUR RIGHT BUT ASKING FOR THE REWARD OF THAT KARMA IS NOT YOUR RIGHT!"

I am sure it is satisfying to have places to chat while you are homebound. The Mylot community is a very welcoming place. I agree with you it is fascinating to find out what people think and how they respond to different discussion. Whatever is made here is a bonus.
Wishing you what you wish for yourself...at home or on-line.
Take care.

I guess I define work much simpler. If I have to go punch a clock, or be there at a certain time, it is work. That's when I say, "I have to go to work." If I were self-employed and worked from home and my livelihood depended on it, then there would be certain times of the day when I would have to say, "I have to get some work done."
Gardening, mowing the lawn, or doing projects around the house I don't consider work even if I don't like them because I don't get paid and I don't have to punch a clock. I can decide when to do them, or whether I want to do them. They may be a lot of work, but I don't consider it work. And the lawn may be looking terrible because I haven't mowed it when I should have (I don't really do that) but I still don't consider it work because it is my choice. No one is forcing me (well, except my wife can be quite persuasive) so it is not work.
I don't consider myLotting work, because I don't have to do it. Even though I get paid a little, I don't have to do it. I won't get fired if I don't. I can choose not to myLot if I want to. So it isn't work.
Maybe I am just being defensive. I am retired now for almost two months. I am still getting used to not having to watch the clock for when it is time to go to work. I'm at the point where I don't want to have to call anything work, because then it wouldn't seem like I am retired. lol.

I am like to too. Housework helping kids with their homework. I don't like my job so I am going to work... I go on mylot for fun. I garden for fun. I build things for fun. I work out cause it is enjoyable. When I am sick then working out is well work. Baking is fun, supper sometimes is work at other times when I am creating something new it is pure joy! I have three childern at times it is work at others superfun! If it is something I don't like doing it is work and if I like doing it then its fun.
I live in the country and I have three kitties, they were all strays and used to the outdoors so I am lucky I don't have the work of a litter box. LOL Vicki

Well it sounds like you have a busy, fullfilling life and have your work and fun priorities quite well defined.
Creating things is fun for me too and I bet your little ones help keep the kid in your thriving..children have a tendency to bring that out in all of us.
Good to know you don't have the litter box blues..but can still have the pleasure of your kitties...you've got the best of both worlds.
Good to have you here again vicki.

For me work is worship. It is very old saying but, it is a real truth. Right now, I am planning to quit my job due to bad infrastructure and bad management. But, I still love my work and work with all my honest and sincerity. I have a team o 14 people and I love guide them towards good performance. When I will leave my current job, I am sure I would going to cry. I am very attached to my work.

Good to hear you are satisfied in your career...you sound as though you have passion and purpose...hey I posted a discussion on that..looks like you have it. Good for you.
My hubby worked for a large corporation and found as you do that the politics and infrastructures can interfere with job satisfaction.
Whatever you decide to do...good luck!
