Your cell phone might be making you sick!

A great video at CNN discusses the fact that bacteria are harbored on our cell phones. I had read similar studies before but this video is great! There is even an incident described about methacillin resistant staph (a staph that is not very well treated by our traditional drugs) being on a cellphone! I have posted a link to the video below. What do you think? Do you routinely wipe down your cellphone with a disenfectant wipe? Do you share a cellphone? http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/health/2007/07/15/tuchman.dirty.cellphones.cnn

Everyone in my family has there own phone so we do not need to share. As for our landline phone, it is rarely connected as all I get is salespeople phoning me, so it is rarely used. Having said that, I work in a nursery where the cleaner is not so hot at her job and the mouses on the computer are only cleaned if we decide. I have noticed that if there is a bug going around, nearly all the kids at some point are off with it. This has made me think. I will defineatly be cleaning a few more things now. Cheers crazynurse!!

YOu are so right about the computer mice. Our local hospital has gone to computer charting. There are computers on stands that the nurses roll from room to room. The keyboards and mice of those computers were recently cultured and it was HORRIBLE what was growing on them. Yet, it remains mandatory to actually roll the computer to the bedside and chart at the 'point of care.'

You know what, last year it was keyboards and my office desk, I spent 20+ years eating at my desk and using the keyboard. I never really got sick from it. Now it is my cellphone, next week it will be my ipod. I think we are getting paranoid and haven't there been studies that show that kids get asthma because we spend so much time sanitizing their lives when they are little. Now Asthma rates are up. I take reasonable precautions. BTW - Do you grab cookies or mints from the candy jar or cookie bowl in restaurants? NOw these are a cause for concern!

I so wipe it down every once in a while, but I definitely will start doing it more often. Thanks for the warning.

Wow! I learned years ago, before I had children, as a receptionist to wipe the phones down. I had seen a whole office wiped out with the flu once and the only thing every one had in common was the use of the one phone. So yes I do, daily wipe my phone off, it’s just part of my daily routine of house chores. I also wipe of door knobs and most of all the handled to the toilet.

Funny that you posted this. Just this morning, I was cleaning my cell phone with an antibacterial wipe and my husband looked at me as if I'd gone off the deep end. He knows I'm very cautious (paranoid) of germs. So, I told him how gross our cell phones can be! I only share my cell phone with my husband and neither of them put it up to our mouths, we usually have it on speaker phone so both of us can talk to the person we called or who called us.

I didn't know that! Thanks a lot crazynurse, if it weren't for you i would still be using my cell phone without even cleaning it once in a while. Sheesh, i wonder how i used it all these days so close to my mouth with it having been worse than a toilet seat!!

Thanks for sharing the information. I don't think I've ever disinfected my cell phone, but I might start now. I often share my cell phone with others and I use other people phones on occasion too. I've never actually had the flu at all but I could have gotten other colds transmitted through the use of my cellphone.
