Are you taking good care of your bones?

Did you know that there are certain things BESIDES eating a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D that you can do to protect your bones? Having a good intake of calcium is only half the battle...we must HOLD ON to the calcium we have put in our bodies. The following leach calcium OUT of our bodies: Caffeine (coffe, tea, colas): increases calcium excreted in the urine Smoking: Increases calcium excreted in the urine Lack of weight bearing exercise (walking, running, jogging): increases calcium leached out of bone and excreted Are you taking good care of your bones? How are you being proactive in good bone health?

One of my jobs hosted a wellness fair this spring. The nurse that did the testing on us and presented for us said that if the caffeine was not excessive you can make up for the calcium pretty easily. Her main concern was with the colas and Dr. Pepper. She emphasized that it was the phosphoric acid that so rapidly eats people's bones (men's and women's). She had some pretty dramatic, local first hand stories to tell about people she had tested who had just made that change and no others. She says a pop a day is not too bad. I had the second to the best bones of all of them that she tested at my job, so I guess I do all right.

That is interesting. I didn't realize that caffiene was bad for that reason too. I try to exercise, it is hard to set time to exercise but we do take walks, swim, etc. I take a supplement since I mostly drink water and want to make sure I get enough of all vitamins. Thanks for the information!

I am not that proactive thinking about bones. I just try to eat a healthy diet that will constitute the whole body rather than conctentrating for bones only..

This is a good discussion. I was exercising on a regular basis and my back started to give a lot of problems so after a lot of trips to the doctor I finally ended up resigning my job. I made anywhere from 40 to 54 beds a day. Four of those beds were flat on the floor. I have had quite a few blue days and not interested in doing much of anything. I had even stopped coming here everyday. I stopped exercising but I still am taking calcium supplements and the vitamon for the joints. I just had a bone density test and it shows that I have good bones. The start of thining of the bones is there but not very bad yet. I am going to get back into doing exercises and I must say thanks for this discussion.

Hi, This is a good discussion topic. I have wondered a lot if I am taking care of my bones because they tend to break easily. I do take supplements with calcium but I would not say my diet is the best. I drink a TON of coffee and diet cola. However I am training for a marathon and tend to run about 8-10 miles a day so that has to help a little bit. I guess I am doing ok, except I am sure the diet could be drastically improved. cheers,

Well, I didn't know all of that. I knew about the calcium part but not anything else. Thanks for sharing this by the way.

Wow I am guilty of doing all these things I shouldn't be doing! I am eating the correct nutritional foods and thought I was doing pretty good.

I have osteoperosis now. I had a hysterectomy when I was only 26 and it has been hard to keep the calcium that I need in my body. I was walking 7 miles a day and that helped alot but now I am not able to walk even a mile. I have been so sick lately and it has taken a toll on my body.

Besides taking my calcium supplements, I guess I don't do as bad as I used to do in most of the other areas. I quit smoking about 14 years ago, and although I will probably never give up pop completely, I have cut down drastically. I used to drink it constantly from morning to night. Now I only have one occasionally. As for the walking, I don't do a lot of that anymore because of some injuries, but I try to do at least a little when I can.

I sure try to. We hike a lot and walk a lot too. I need to do more weight bearing exercise. I asked you in my post about the bunnies if you have ever heard of Bronchiecstasis? I need to send you a personal message about that. My husband has it and I wondered if you knew much about it.
