Should you tip if the food is horrible?

I went into a dining place the other day. The atmosphere was nice. The server was very friendly. She did an excellent job. However, the food at the place was horrible. I had to send it back twice because it was wrong. When the final product got to my table it was still horrible food. I understand the waitress isn't responsible for the food quality. But at the same time she should be accountable for bringing out at least the right order. Like, I said no tomatoes on the salad. What is your opinion. Should I have tipped her or not? Should I have given her a reduced tip?

I wouldn't tip. Well I lie I would have because I never like to offend anyone but my hubby wouldn't. He would have fussed about paying at all for bad food served wrong. He is a little more outspoken than me.

I dont think you would be offending anyone if you got some bad food. That is when you speak to the mgr. As far as the server, the person is trying to make a living and I know in florida they make like $2.10 per hour plus tips. It is the person in the kitchen that needs to be reported for the bad food not the server. Now if the server sees that something is wrong with the food and dose not say anything, then you should say something or request another server or to speak with the mgr.

For me it would depend upon the waitress's attitude. If she got upset about me asking to have my food correct then I wouldn't have even dealt with her. After the first time of sending my food back I would have told them to keep it and requested the manager and told him/her of my experience. Usually the manager will comp the entire meal and then all you have to do is tip the waitress.

I would give her a reduced tip.You said she was friendly but she brought the wrong food to you.I would give her a tip because she was friendly, but it would be reduced because of the wrong order. And if the atmoshere was good but the food wasn't , I would complain to the manager. Maybe he/she can fire the chef before word of mouth gets the restaurant closed.

I think the problem is equally shared between the wait staff and the kitchen.

She brings the order that the cook puts with it. She does not have time to make sure the cook is matching up the orders to the right plates! the problem lies in the kitchen.

Nnnnnnnnooooooooooooooo If your server can not see plainly as she should have that your order was wrong. Then absolutely not. And if you had to send your food back more than once, then your meal should have been comped. You should have also asked to speak to the OWNER and explained what had happened. As a last resort if no one listened to you or was helpful, you should have left a penny on the table with a note explaining why. A penny is a bigger insult than no tip at all

I tip based on how the waitor/waitress is; such as if they are really nice and trying really hard to get out my meal despite the fact the cook has messed it up 3 times... Yes - I will give this person a good tip. With how many orders people get in on a daily basis - it wouldn't surprise me too much that they didn't think to check your food for you before hand as I am sure she just wanted to get you your food promtly. However, if you said that you were allergic WHILE ordering your food the first time. Normal people would probably remember that and put huge stars by this part of your order. I would probably be ok with this if the waitor/waitress seemed to be really miffed by the fact there were still tomatoes however and they had it fixed. If said waitor/waitress had no written down the order however...this is a different story. It takes a lot for me to take away a tip based on food. However, so many waitresses and waitors or rather... people in general have such bad customer service that I often end up leaving less than full tips.

because you had sent it back twice, i'd say probably not tip her. because she obviously didnt listen to your order in the first place.

I would tip her because it isn't her fault for the food being bad it's actually the cooks fault. Sometimes though people don't tip the waitress or waiter because of it and i personally think it's rude. Alot of waiter and waitresses only make a certain amount of money per hour to do these kind of jobs. I know when i was a waitress i was only making 2.50 a hour and i was really depending on the tips cause that was really my income..

I think not! Tips are suppose to be gifts of expression of gratitude for good service. Why tip if the service were unpleasant?

I think yes you should have tipped her. Like you said she did an excellent job. And she's the one who gets the tips - not the resturant. The tomatoes on the salad - the people who prepare the food usually puts them there anyway and doesn't pay attention to the slip. I get that all the time with crutons at my favorite resturant. I don't know if the waiter there actual brings the food - most of the places we go anymore the bus boys bring it out - but she might not have known or remembered to check when she brought it out. So I wouldn't have held that against her.

Tipping is based on the quality of service not the food. It is not always the servers fault when your food comes out wrong. The server is not the one back there cooking your food. It's not like they can do a quick taste test before delivering the food. And as far as the tomatoes go I consider that to be a minor mistake on the servers part. That is a mistake that can easily be fixed so there is really no need to tip any less for that.

I told her that I'm allergic and the lettuce had juice on it too or I'd just pick them off. She brought back the what appeared to be the SAME sald with the tomatoes picked off but tomatoe juice all over the top of the lettuce. I did tip her by the way. I was just wondering for the next time I get in a situation like this.

It is a hard one, because there are always two different paths to go. The first one is that you shouldn't because you weren't satisfied with the food that you are paying for as well as because of the extra time you had to wait in order to get your meal. The other is that the tip should be given to the server because she was friendly and did a good job on her part of taking your order, delivering your food as well as being friendly when you clearly weren't enjoying your meal. The other point to think about also is that although you might not have enjoyed it, the food might be delicious in the eyes of the chef and others. But at the end of the day, I think the tip shouldn't really matter at all, as long as you paid for your and you got want you wanted or were expected that is all fine. The tip is just something extra. But I would still a give a bit (only little) to the server for being good, and give more if both the server and food was great.

A server is not responsible for the quality of the food, and often enough, she's not responsible for your lack of tomatoes on your salad. If she makes no tips, she doesn't get paid. If she was prompt and friendly, she should get tipped. By all means, speak to the manager about the poor quality of the food, but don't shoot the messenger.

You definitely shouldn't penalize the waitress for the quality of the food. As for mistakenly delivering something that's wrong it depends on the overall situation. For example, my ex and I used to go to this restaurant where he would order a chicken philly cheesesteak with no onions, with mayo and the bun not toasted. A lot of times it was delivered with onions and he would send it back. Usually, the replacement was delivered within 5 minutes. That's good service, the error might have been on the part of the cook, or it might have been on the part of the server. Either way, it was fixed quickly. That waiter gets a tip, perhaps not an amazing tip, but a reasonable tip. At another restaurant he would order fajitas without peppers or onions. Sometimes it would come with them and be sent back. When it was sent back 1 of two things would happen. Either the server would walk to the back, remove the peppers and onions and bring the food back out, or the food would be cooked again and brought out within a few minutes. Because the issue was him being allergic to peppers and onions, not simply disliking them, the servers who just took them off and re-served the same food didn't get tipped. If you sent it back because it was wrong and the server took care of the problem (or had it taken care of) quickly and apologetically, I'd say give at least your standard tip. If it took forever, they seemed put off by it, etc... reduce the tip.

no, i wouldn't... we don't have the obligation to tip the waitress if the food is terrible... i wouldn't even pay for the bill if the food is really horrible... let alone giving a tip... i think it is only fair to do that...

If you ate it, it's ridiculous not to pay the bill. And if you sat there long enough to eat it, long enough for your server to bring you refills, extra napkins, offer you dessert or coffee, she deserves a tip.

I used to be a waitress.I would give her a reduced tip and tell her why and also tell the manager on duty why also.

If I receive good service, I will not hold the waiter responsible for what the chef cooked. That is not their fault. I would leave feedback though on how the food tastes so they are aware of what is going on.

It's the kitchen workers fault if your food was wrong or bad not the waitresses. Do you honestly expect her to remember every little detail of every order from all the tables she's serving at the same time like who didn't want tomatoes on their salad? If you had such a big problem with the food you should have asked to see a supervisor or manager instead of taking it out on the waitress and having her do twice as much work for you with no tip for her efforts. Having worked as a waitress I know how often kitchen staff will insist the order is right even if the waitress does question it. They don't want to get in trouble for wasting food so they put the blame on the waitresses. The other thing you need to remember is that no matter how good or ba the food is and no matter how har the waitress works to try tomake you happy, she still only gets paid well uner minimum wage for her time. She depends on those tips. I can understand not tipping a bad waitress but not tipping a good one just because the kitchen kept messing up your food is wrong.

Frankly, If I were in your place, I never have paid the cost of the food even. You are so generous that you even think about the tip.

Hi, I think it depends. You are right, if the food is bad that has nothing to do with her. If she did her job perfectly well, there is no reason for her not to get a good tip. However, you mentioned that she messed up part of your order. That being the case I would say she is in line for a reduced tip. My two cents... cheers,
