The below link is video footage of part of Lady Bird Johnson's funeral (from CNN). It's only about a minute long. Watch it and tell me if you find anything about it that sends a shiver up your spine and/or puts a gross feeling in the pit of your stomach. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2007/07/14/vo.johnson.funeral.cnn What's wrong with this picture?!

I just watched it....I have to admit I don't know who Lady Bird Johnson was, and I didn;t have the sound on so maybe I missed something. They were all making a hand symbol that I alawys thought was assoctiated with rock n' roll or something, that seemed odd....but is that what I was supposed to be looking for? Did I need to turn the sound on?

it was not in a church, it was in the auditorium of the university the woman, and most of the participants, attended

Absolutely nothing - Lady Bird was an UT alumni. That hand gesture...while also being the sign of "El Diablo" in some contexts, was used because of her connection with the University of Texas. In other words, it was the "Hook 'em Horns" sign. There's no reason to get chills over this...the reason for it's usage was quite clear, and was even listed under the window displaying the movie.

Thank you for explaining this to me like a kind hearted individual, for I am neither a sports fan nor a Texan & with my religious back ground as a child, I was a bit too freaked out to even read anything on that page. I just wanted to shut the dang window and not look at it any more. Thinking it was a blatant slap in God's face, my first thought was to get other thoughts on this. The idea that any institution would take something known to be a symbol of satanic ritual on as their own thing never entered my mind until people began responding. Thank you again for your polite response.

Since that was being held at the University of Texas, and the UT band was playing, that symbol is not the symbol of the beast (which belongs to wrong and roll anyways) but rather a symbol for the Longhorns. That hand gesture is NOT santanic. Theology aside, here is the history involved: 1. The number of the beast is not 666. Revalations was written in greek, where numbers are used for letters as well. In greek those symbols spell out the name of a Roman Empire, who was "the beast" of his day. It amazes me how many theologians, priests, pastors, yada yada are clueless on this simple *fact* of history. 2. That symbol has long been used to ward off the "evil eye," using either both fingers down, or one finger down. 3. The gesture became popular when Heavy Metal Singer Ronnie James Dio started flashing it at concerts. His grandmother who was very superstitious used to do that all the time to *ward off evil*. It's actually thought to be a symbol of protection. 4. During the Late seventies and early eighties, christian fundlementalists (bible thumpers) tagged it as being satanic and the symbol of the beast... erroneouslly. 5. You will see it at any rock concert. 6. There is no six, but the number six is cool.

The problem with religion interpretation is that it is just that... interpretation. The bible or any other religious text needs to be taken for what it is, and that to me means it is very important when it was written and who was the original audience. During the writing of revelations, Christians were being persecuted by the Roman's. The whole 666 thing again, spelled out the name of a Roman Emporer who was trying to stamp out the christian cult by doing all manner of beastly things, such as using them for sport in the Gladiatorial rings. The bible talks about the number and how money will bear his mark and all with trade with it..yada, yada...yeah well the Ceasar was on the coins, the whole thing about armageddon is ancient roman history it's not some coming event. In many other cases it was also a retelling of the Hebrew book of Daniel. I just wish all the "fire and brimstone" preachers were actually study history, the original languages of thier religious texts, and those religious texts themselves. Of course it's a lot harder to scare some one into following them if they don't have an "or else" clause to hang over their head. The ignorance of the clergy and theologists in general is stunning.

Apparently most the other readers accept the goat's head symbol as the symbol in support of Texas Longhorns. Apparently it was supposed to be a tribute to here alma mater, University of Texas. ...it still creeps me out seeing religious figures making that symbol, tho.

OK were they really putting up the Texas Longhorn symbol? The priests and all were doing it and the band playing. Yeah that was just a little weird if you ask me.

I'm having a hard time grasping the concept that this symbol being used for college football is so easily accepted and those that are saying "hey, wait a minute, that means something else" are being chided by atheists. What the heck are atheists doing in the religious section of the forum anyway?

Excuse me! what the hell are you doing on the computer! Aren't you supposed to be in church? We are allowed to be where ever we choose. At least WE are educated about the things that are important. And I suspect, most of US know more about YOUR religion than YOU do.

Yes apparently it has a double meaning the only one I knew of was of course the rock-on devil worshiping sign from heavy metal and satanic rock like DEO. I had seen Bush use it when he was in church also. As a side note here is a commentary about how others were pretty shocked when they seen Bush use it. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,145062,00.html Also here is another one with him and the Queen .... lol http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=20070515&articleId=5662

read the rest of the thread, that should explain it The song was that old "I've been working on the railroad all the livelong day". It was the hand symbols made there that bothered me, particularly church officials making that symbol. Many are saying it's for the Texas Longhorns, but I am having a hard time with it anyway.
