I think we're all just a little obsessive-compulsive?

Have you ever found yourself, straightening up the forks and knives at a dinner table, in a restaurant or at someone's place? Maybe you've straightened a picture frame and adjusted it just right, and that too not at your house, but somewhere else.
We all have our little quirks, something weird about all of us, and some habits that we can't seem to shake.
For example, I'm very particular about spelling and I find myself mentally correcting and adding apostrophes and punctuation in almost all the texts I read, and especially in e-mails and in forums like these. If it's possible I correct them, and thankfully that's not possible here. But I still do it mentally anyway.
We all have something in us that we have to make "right", things facing a certain way, or placed in a certain order...
Do you have some weird habit like that, some quirky quirk like that?
What do you do? Or can't stop yourself doing?

I often find myself straightening up knives and forks, both at home, at my friends place and at restaurants. I guess it's a bit of an occupational habit, since I've worked at restaurants for a couple of years.
I can be a bit obsessive-compulsive when it comes to cleaning as well. I don't mind if it's a bit untidy at home, but when I do clean it has to be perfect. Everything in it's place, the books or magazines I read at the time needs to be put in order... things like that.

This is about me isn't it? LOL, yes I can't stand "clutter" and I have to organize things. Anything I haven't used or touched in 6 months (besides holiday stuff) has to go. I can't stand knowing it's there, even if it's stored away in the attack. It's like this annoying bug crawling down my neck until it’s gone.
I also can’t stand our friend’s list. Why can’t we organize it? I hate I can’t separate the posters (those that start posts) from the repliers (those that just reply). I know it’s not a big deal, but because of my “quirks” it does drive me nuts .

I have a very strange little habit that I am always compelled to do. Whenever I am at the doctors office or at a restaurant or anywhere that has that day's newspaper laying around, I have to pick it up and go to the crossword puzzle and see if it's been done. The ones that really bother me are the ones that someone has started and didn't finish...I just have to finish those. I've actually ripped the puzzles out of the paper and taken them home with me just so that I could finish it.

I am almost afraid to answer this. Are you checking my spelling and grammar? I am sure that you will probably find mistakes somewhere along the line. Anyway, when I am waiting at the doctor, I am always straightening out the magazines. I straighten out silverware, saltshakers, etc. on the table at the restaurant. In the grocery store, quite often when I pull a can off the shelf, I pull the next can to the front and turn the label forward. The list goes on, but I will stop...

Oh, ok, now that explains it a whole lot better. It's like my friend who used to waitress before, she constantly makes sure the table is set right, and is always examining the dishes and cutlery at any restaurant and wipes the table whenever we're done. I guess it's just sort of like a habit then.

Well, you'll be glad to know that no spelling mistakes here, but some punctuation corrections could be possible, and, actually, have been mentally done already. Ha ha.
Well, you better not go to a supermarket then or you'll be re arranging things all day, ha ha.

I'm not sure how much of the grocery store thing is obsessive compulsive, and how much is that I used to work at a grocery store and I always tried to make things look nice for the customers. I don't go through every shelf, just when I mess things up by taking something off of the shelf. If it is already bad, I can let it go, but if there are just a couple of cans out of order, I have to fix them.

I definitely admit that I can be a bit obsessive compulsive at times. I hear that at work from one of my coworkers sometimes. I usually like to keep my computer and desk more organized than she does and she reminds me of that. At home, my roommate seems to hog up the refrigerator and leaves very little room for me to put food in there. Every time he puts stuff on my shelves, I will put them back on his shelves. LOL

Oh, I KNOW I am OCD. LOL At restaurants, before we leave, I always stack the plates for the server and wipe the table of any crumbs. Make sure the salt, pepper, and any other condiments are all where the should be before leaving. At home pictures have a certain "way" the need to face and be, my hubby will move them just a bit to watch me run and "fix" them. I have a certain "side" of the covers that goes by my feet and will actually wake my hubby up if he falls asleep with them the "wrong" way. I could go on for days, but I think you all think I'm weird enough already...lol

Lately, I find myself washing my hands more often before touching my food. I think those commericals for hand sanitizer got stuck somewhere in the back of my mind. Then I noticed how many guys come out of the toilet and don't wash their hands, then they touch the handle on the door, shopping carts, ect. It really grossed me out. If I have to pull a handle to exit the bathroom, I now use a piece of paper towel to open the door then throw it in the wastebasket as I leave. I know this sounds extreme, but I would hate to think what could end up on that door handle.

I too am obsessive about grammar. Sometimes with the websites I think I am the only person that understands English. I find I always have to read signs as I pass them even if I have done so loads of times before.

is "obsessive-compulsive" the same as "anal-retentive"?
i know i have a tendency to arrange things "nicely" and on occasions the owner would look and me and say "thank you...i guess".

i guess my quirk is if i can see two or more things that can be done at one time, rather than starting it new each time. eg if u are going past something that needs to be picked up and put away and heading to that room any then do it as u pass it. i guess with kids u tend to stop yourself fixing up the dinner cutlery when they have helped set it up so not to offend them. so i do believe u learn to extend that to others so not to offend as well

I have a tendency to do something like that too, now that you mention it. If I have to pick things and go through a certain area, I mentally plan the shortest route and the best way to do it in one trip, it's almost obsessive, since I won't move until I have the perfect plan.

I am a little obsessive compulsive about work mostly. I am very bad at housecleaning which I don't even do myself. I have people do it for me as I'm disabled, but I'm not very good at keeping on top of them as I don't think housecleaning affects my life as much as work does. I do some weird things. For example, I'm happies it I owe people money that ends in zeros. For example, if I owe $57.00 and had made a payment arrangement I will try to make the first payment $17.00 even though I only have to pay $10.00 so that the balance will be even. I also am happiest when my mylot posting total ends in zeros. This means I try to post 10 items a day. Not that I always succeed, but I like it better that way. One thing I'm glad of is that I don't melt down if one of my little idiosyncracies is not satisfied.

It is interesting, I must drive you nuts, I can't spell and my punctuation has improved, however I did once write a 27 page letter and use only 3 punctuation marks. Not because I didn't leave space for them, I just don't tend to think about them when I am writing it is easier to think about them when typing though.
That and friends have corrected me for ever.
As for a quirk for me it is how I do dishes, lol I have to have them arranged in what I call a neat mess before doing them or I don't wash them, if the dishes are cluttered, then I keep piling them up, but don't do them, until I go nuts and put them in what I call a neat mess, so lol I can't wash dishes if the area I am doing the dishes in, isn't a certain way. Even in my own home.
I have restacked stacked dishes before washing them.
It is the same for when I clean, if there is clutter around I will first gather all the clutter and stack or arrange it a certain way THEN I will clean it up, put it away, throw it out, sort through or what ever needs doing.
I won't clean a sloppy mess only a neat mess, so I first have to make the mess into a more organized mess before I clean up, according to my mother and sister that just adds to the work that I am doing.
I disagree, because they tend to go back and forth etc, and to my way of thinking I prefer to clean in a lazy way,
Interesting that you mentioned that about straightening in a diner,
Actually it is a psychology test, next time you go out to eat at diner, and want to see something interesting in behavior.
Watch those you are with they will rearrange the table, not just their own place setting, but some will fuss with how the condiments on the table or centerpiece or whatever is laid out.
Everyone is marking their territory, and kind of drawing imaginary lines claiming their space.
It is best to do this with only one other person because you can really observe that person. Then slowly during the course of the meal, expand your space, and make his area smaller, as you do this, and do it very subtley so he / she isn't consciously aware, but you will most likely notice that the person is becoming agitated, or angry or irratated with out knowing why,
It is because in general people tend to be territorial, and need a space they claim for themselves.

Does turning a roll of toilet paper the "right way" (over the top, of course) count? I'm talking even at other peoples' houses!
I can relate to the grammar and punctuation thing. My lastest pet peeve is the poor, abused, and sometimes neglected, apostrophe! The apostrophe is constantly used to pluralize (is that even a word?) words and acronyms. It drive's me absolutely batty! And yes, dear MyLotters, THAT was an intentionally misplaced apostrophe!
