Cruel, Sad Photo?

United States
July 23, 2007 5:44am CST
Over the weekend the media reported the death of Tammy Faye. Death is always a sad topic and Tammy Faye Bakker (Messner) was known for her over use of make up but I felt more saddened by the cruel photo the media used to remind everyone of her penchant for make up. Surely there was some other photo that could have been used for her obituary? Not this pathetic caricature! Does anyone agree with me that she should have been allowed, by the media, to have some dignity left? Photo: Tammy Faye Bakker

I don't like the photo, but she did go on television looking like that so obviously she wasn't too concerned about how she looked at the time. Or maybe she was - but not enough to hide from public view. I didn't recognise her at all. Whatever she and her ex-husband did, I believe she has already suffered in her life and have heard she faced her sickness with bravey - she should now be left to rest in peace.

As she seemed to her been rather vain about her appearance I wonder if she was on so much pain medication that she was not aware of how badly she looked.

Well - there is no alternative really for her - she could either look sick with no makeup on or sick with makeup on. Either way she didn't look good. She wasn't on medicatiuon when she was healthy and used to pile the makeup on so maybe she had a different idea as to what "looked good". In any case, yes I agree the media could have used a better photo of her (when she was healthy), but maybe that is not what people should be focussing on anyway.

I did see that photo Maybe I am wrong or I saw different than you did but I doubt that there any phtos out there with out makeup on. BUt maybe they could have looked harder in family albums and not what the media already had.

Lakota I was not trying to say they should have used a photo of her without make-up. I have seen many photos which did not look so scary and almost unhuman as that one. The media could at least have left her a little dignity by using a different one.

I do not know who this woman is as I am from the UK, but that is one sad photo to use. Obviously you can tell she is suffering and this does not show any respect or give her much dignity. I must admit I was taken aback when the photo came up, didn't anyone advise her on how she looked. Who was her make-up artist Krusty the clown??

Your words "does not show any respect or give her much dignity" is exactly what I thought.

Yes, out of respect for Tammy Faye and those who are left behind, a photo from the past should have been used. In the photo that you have shown us, one can see the suffering and the effects of the illness on her body. She looks like she is in so much pain. That is horrendous to show. The media can be so insensitive. We had a child to be hit by a car and killed on one of our busiest highways in this county. (the child wandered away from the parents who were looking at plants and wandered onto the 4-lane expressway.) The media put a closeup of the child's shoe lying on the pavement, that was knocked of his body from the impact of the car. Can you imagine how the parents felt?

tammy faye - tammy faye doing a Tammy Faye
yes I too loved Tammy Faye! I used to sit and Laugh and laugh at her antics. Especially when she and Jim were running the TV show. I knew right from day one that she was her own worst enemy, and she proved that over and over. The silly makup and black eye shadow made her look stupid. Dignity u say? Tammy never knew what the word meant! She was a walking talking nincompoop, and I'll miss her! I used to tune in to the PTL just to see what she was going to say next!

Oh yes, do I agree with you! We watched her on Larry King Live..and the only thing that appeared to remain of Tammy Faye was here overly made up eyes...and her sense of humor. She was such a funny, warm, open, honest engaging gal throughout her whole life. In Celtic traditions we celebrate the life of the person when they pass...not our loss. It would have been a much greater celebration to Tammy Faye if the media had chosen to feature her...full of life and love the way we'd all like to remember her. Good post whiteheahter39..by calling attention to the sad photo..you are paying your own respect to a courageous women and allowing other mylotters to do the same. Thanks for that!

Yes, I do. I feel the media can be very cruel. She put up a good fight and should be able to have her dignity.

WTF! At first since I am responding from email, I thought, “well heather we all know she liked a ton of make up.” Then I went the long way so I could see the photo expecting a typical pic of her. OMG!!!!!! You are not kidding! That doesn't even look like her! Why in the hell did they do that? I am no fan of hers by any means, but that is just ridiculous and scummy of them to have done. Cruel doesn't even cover it. You know this is one of the reasons why I have lost so much respect for the media, cause it has none for anyone. It's all about selling a story using shock and under handed tactics. And I just want to say, seeing it was CNN was no surprise to me. That is the last source I turn to for news. IMO the National Enquirer is less tacky as these jerks are!

I was also not a fan of hers and was used to seeing photos with her makeup but today on other news broadcasts I have seen plenty other more tasteful ones. I agree they are tacky jerks.

Hi Whiteheather, I agree thats a pretty sad photo of her. That was taken from her last interview with larry king not to long ago, but your right, they should have used an older photo. Take care, Terry

I agree, they shouldn't have shown that, she looks like a walking skeleton. It doesn't even look like her. When I first saw that photo on tv, I actually got scared. They should have shown a more healthy looking photo of her. People don't need to see that.

That is horrible. if they could not have found a better photo then no photo at all would have been kinder. She was a very vain woman and I am sure this is not a photo she would have appreciated being published!

I agree they should have used another pictue, but that is the media in this day and time. I'm sure they could have picked something else to make her look better.

You have to admire someone who will stand up for what they like like that. I dont think it was hurting anyone for her to enjoy her make up and I think people should focus way more on how someones heart is rather then their looks anyway....I am sorry she had to go through all that. I am sorry that people cant show more respect....

That's discraceful. Yes, cruel and sad too. Why didn't they just show a photo of her corpse and be done with it? The last time I saw her on TV she was looking bloated with masses of pale blue eyeshadow and luminous pink lippy, her hair was blonde and she looked terribly ill. But she was struggling to stay alive. RIP Tammy. It's between you and your maker now.

I saw parts of her interview with Larry King, which is where that photo came from. She wanted the world to see her battle with cancer and to face down the shame that many people feel when their bodies are ravaged with disease. Yes, she would have looked better, perhaps, if she'd had more appropriate make-up. But that was her signature. She would not have been Tammy Faye without it. While I was shocked by the photos and, frankly, somewhat offended I realized after hearing what she had to say that it was her choice to not go into seclusion and to let the world know that to the very end she was who she was and placed her faith in her Lord. She was a gutsy woman. And even though I often disagreed with her I admire her strength and pupose.

I agree with your assessment of her and she certainly did have her faith and humor right up to the very end. However out of respsct to her dignity the media did not have to use a still shot of her from this particular TV appearance.

That really was unnecessarily cruel honey! One of the many reasons I dislike the media - they have to sensationalise everything! There are many other photographs they could have used that would not have been so nasty! xxx

I also thought they could have used a better picture. Remember, she was a Christian Evangelical, and the media hates that. I also saw the replay of the interiew with Larry King. At first, I was disturbed. But as I watched the interview, I realized how much dignity and grace she had, despite the fact that her body was failing her. Her mind was still sharp, and her faith was as strong as ever. By the end of the interview, I actually admired her more than I ever had before. I hope I have her strength, dignity, and strength during my last days. May she enjoy peace in Christ.

Yes, when I saw this I was so sad for her..Her illness really took a toll on her. I told my husband that they could have chosen another picture, possibly one of her in better health..I was stunned.
