I FINALLY have my own room for crafting!!! (I also have a room for poker now, too, but that's a different story :P ) I was wondering what kinds of ideas you guys would have for this space. I've been living here for a month, and right now nothing in their is organized since I've moved in! It's just boxes of my crafting supplies and my sewing machine!!! How does one go about setting up a crafting room? Do you have your own crafting room? I need some ideas to get me motivated and started in this project I've always dreamed of doing!

Great, I am jealous. My craft room is in my bonus room which is my den, plus office. I think those clear plastic containers are good that way you can see what is in the containers. Good lighting is a must for a craft room. I saw a craft room once where the lady use peg boards and hang scissors, embroidery hoops etc. When you finish, can you post a photo on Mylot?

I will absolutly post a photo when I am all done!!! I'm in the process of cleaning up the room right now (The last tenents were apparently really terrible, didn't pay their rent for 7 months, and left all their stuff here when they moved out. My landlord is a sweet, little old lady and she did as much as she could and I told her I'd do the rest) Sooo....furniture left behind I have to work with: A closet-type piece that will perfectly hide clear plastic containers (I will build shelves inside of this unit), and a table I will use for cutting fabric. The peg board idea is a great one!!!

You could put peg board on the side of the "closet" if possible.

I got to have a craft room briefly, when I was in between roommates at my old apartment. The biggest thing that I enjoyed having in there was a table that I tried to keep clear of supplies, that I could use as a cutting table. I actually managed to get a lot more sewing done when I had a good place to cut fabric! Unfortunately, since we moved, I only have a crafting hallway. The lighting there isn't great, so I have to sew in the morning when the natural light makes it a little bit better. I think I need to invest in some good lamps to improve it. That might be something else you will need for your craft room, depending on the natural light and any indoor lights you have already in the room.

Great idea! I didn't even think of the lighting aspect of it. I'm going to have to do a little research to see what types of bulbs best mimic natural light. I've never had a table to cut my fabric on - I've always used the floor! LOL I can definitly see myself getting a lot more crafting done now that I have my own room. Thank you for your input!

I'm very envious! Exactly how you set it our will depend on the crafts you do, fo rexample silversmithing needs different set ups than sewing or beadmaking. However, storage needs to be your number one priority, its impossible to keepa workroom calm and tidy unless you have enough room to put away current projects and room for the 'stash' of supplies.

Yes, I am definitely going to have to stay organized from early on! I have thus far avoided purchasing new craft materials untill I take that step. I wonder if Ikea is going to be having a sale anytime soon.... :P Maybe I will just go to walmart or target and see what they have along the lines of storage.

What great ideas! Thank you so much for your input. I like the old chip rack idea. I use containers like coffee cans or iced tea containers for my yarn, but I need to find some more because I just have SOOOOO much yarn!!!

I guess I would put a comfortable chair in there for when you're knitting and crochet. Some type of shelves to organize your yarn for easy access. Also, stack your finished items to show off your talents. Your friends and neighbor might even buy a few if they see them out on a shelf. Your sewing machine probably needs a table to sit on. And you need a place to lay out your fabric for cutting and measuring. I wish I have a craft room. With time, I am sure your room will be filled with your own ideas what it should be like.

Thank you for your input! I never EVER thought I'd have my own craft room, but I found a 3 bedroom apartment for the same price as a one bedroom, so I figured "Why not?" It's just me, my dog, and two kitties that live here, so I have TONS of space now!

LOL...Yes, I won't be retiring any time soon. But, luckily I have a job where I get to stay at home a lot, so I will be crafting AND working at the same time! LOL

I have my art room. I have put up shelfs all around the room. Then I got storage cabnets, and one large table in the middle of the room for cutting mats. Have fun, and enjoy.

My "craft room" is a third bedroom but it in not only for my crafting but my girlfriend has a lot of her crafting material in there too. I have about one and one half wall space to work with. I have a card table to work on and shelves to put bottles and bottles of beads and other crafts material on. It is big enough to put a swivel chair in but not much more. I also have a couple of aquariums along one of the walls (one stacked over the other on a hand built stand).I have some of those light that have fluorescent lights and can be bent to put light where I want them to be. It would be nice to have more room to work in but that is not to be while I am renting here, maybe when I move to Texas in a few years.

Strangely enough, I like recycling bins. Why? Because you can open them without having to stack and unstack all the time. You can label them, or they can be color-coded. The only problem is that for some crafts, they're too deep. So for larger items, the bins. Also for sorting large items that I use for recycling crafts like clothes into rugs or quilts. For smaller items, small drawers. For medium-sized items, medium-sized drawers. Work desks are nice, esp. ones that make the project you're working on available easily, and concealable if you need to start another project on top. Part of my bathroom is supposed to be my craft room, but due to inheriting lots of clothes plus buying a farmhouse with hardly any closet space. . .maybe someday. I really envy you. I keep dreaming about mine. Enjoy and yes, please let us know how it turns out.

Thank you for your input! I have NO CLOSETS in my apartment...It's kind of weird not having any closets at all, but I'll get used to it. Thanks again!
