I let my children 11, 8, and 6 watch pretty much any scary movies. I think the only things I won't is stuff with nude scenes but even then they have watched movies and covered their eyes during some scenes. They have seen Austin powers and Halloween etc. We were watching the 3rd Austin movie last night on Fox and it was censored out and my youngest said hey he didn't fart. They don't get scared from scary movies or have nightmares about it. The things that give them nightmares are the news and real life events. My daughter had a really bad dream after watching a documentary on Tigers where poachers skinned a live tiger. They know the movies are fake. Howard saw them watching Arragon and thought it wasn't for kids. If he knew Jessica (almost 12) watched South Park he would probably freak. Have you any experiences where it was harmful to your kids watching certain movies? What do you censor?

Those movies are rated R for a reason. Granted they are fake but that dosnt make it right for children under the age of 18 to watch them. I will not let my kids watch anything that is not age appropeiate. I dont let them watch the news either. They dont have to be worried about what is going on in the world right now all they need to be is kids and nothing more.

News can be hard on them. Thanks for your opinion! Vicki

It depends on the child. My eldest (now an adult) has always watched scary movies. He's just always been fascinated by monsters, the supernatural & special effects. When he was about 4 I had to drag him away from a conversation with an adult in a book store, they were discussing the pros & cons of various substances for use as fake blood. I did try to avoid excessive violence and movies that seemed real. A regular looking person shooting another person is harder to process imo than a monster you know isn't real chasing a person.
My daughter on the other hand even now (14) has a hard time watching scary movies. I don't out & out forbid her from them, but I don't encourage it either.

I wouldn't force my kids to watch them either. One of my kids isn't that interested and just doesn't bother watching.

I could remeber when I was a kid, my parents didn't had television. What we did was go to people who have it (television) and watch films there and I was always having bad dreams whenever I watched horror films. I won't allow my kids to watch every movie and I will also tell my wife not to allow watch anyhow films. Thanks

Hi,
I think there are some shows that may be harmful to kids. Any type of horror or shows with overt sexuality are not good for kids under a certain age obviously. If we are talking about shows with the occasional swear words, I do not think that is any big deal. In truth, they will end up seeing all these things eventually anyways. However, as parents we can protect them as long as we can. :)
cheers,
