Psychiatric consultation should be required for any form of depression that lasts more than a few weeks; however, with so many medical bills some people just don't have the money to go for a pschiatric evaluation. Some states in the USA have country facilities for people that cannot affford to pay for the pschiatric evaluation.

There are facilities that accept patients on a sliding fee schedule...5.00 to 35.00 per visit, depending on your income.

Yes, but even on those sliding scales, I have come to find out that there are other qualifications you must meet before they will accept you. Such as, some places require a denial form from welfare along with other paperwork before they will accept you.

In Connecticut the denial is for hospitalization only, for counseling on the town or city scale it is without any paperwork, just a lack of income and medical insurance that provides psychiatric care. It does work for many!

Is depression a disease of thought or of the chemical mind? I think in most cases it is controlled by thought and is therefore treatable by changing ones thinking. And in this process, beneficial chemical are created within the brain. I don't agree with manageable depression since depression is not an option at all. If you have a choice, why be depressed? If you have no choice, there still has to be a reason for experiencing depression.

I do not mean to argue, but you are being inaccurate in your description of manic depression. If your depression is unmanageable it is severe clinical depression. Manic depression may be characterized by severe or mild depressive episodes, low periods, interspersed with periods of being "high" or manic. Being unable to sleep, having delusions of being wealthy, or invincible, or being sexually promiscuous, or gambling. Doing things in excess. Manic comes from the same root word as mania. I can speak on this with first hand knowledge as I have friends who are so severely bi polar disordered (a clinical name for manic depressive) that they have to draw disability.

All depressed people need counseling, just someone to listen and not judge them as weak. Depression is manageable when you continue with your daily acivites, you may not be happy but at least life goes on. There are so many different levels of depression, so complicated. Depressed people have learned to survive on a daily level with medication and counseling.

To avoid depression,it is better to do yoga first. If it beyond manageable level, try to make that person to move to a new place so that the atmosphere changes his mind to some extent.try to convey him wht is good and what is bad.Try to motivate him to do good things everyday.

I agree. It's just so hard even when it's manageable. Or maybe sometimes we think it's manageable and it's really not - we should be in counseling. Learn the symptoms and how progressed it is because depression is not something to "just wait and see."

dear sukumar 794, You can not measure the depression rate of individual. I do not think it is possible. There is no manageable depression. Depression is depression. Why people get depressed. Basically when an individual does not get sufficient love and affection from his/her father or mother, brother, sister and husband or close relatives or love failure. In life all the persons pass through depressed stage but most of the people overcome it of their own whereas certain cases go beyond the limit. They are unable to analysis the cause of the depression. Therefore they always remain depressed. Through love and affection and also through councelling the depression can be cured.

Depression arises from situations that are usually frustrating and lack of self-esteem. Once I had a problem about depression, I take matters seriously, like when failing in Board exams.. I'm totally depressed and feel very low that somtimes I think about ending my life.. It was really a horrible experience back then.. But thanks to my family and friends for they were the ones who supported me and show me to stnad and fight my way through this struggles.. I even went for psychiatric treatment and I do appreciate the advice and the counselling my Doctor gave me.. It's really helpful.. So if you have a problem with depression I suggest you seek for help becauseit is a serious matter..
