A man in New Jersey built his own windmill to generate electricity.

His gas and electric bill was running between $340-370 a month. After he built his windmill to generate electricity and put on solar panels, his bill now runs about $9.50 a month and he's sending power back to the local power grid! Some of his neighbors are complaining about the noise and some say it's an eyesore and one is suing the township for violation of height ordinances! How crazy is that! We all need extra ways to cut energy consumption or to save on energy bills and his way is too noisy and an eyesore! Give me a break! Check out the video here. Scroll down and double click on Windmill fight to avoid the commercial.

it all comes down to what these silly neighbours want a clean envirenment for futer generations or a quiet time seems selfish to me

If he had bought a wind geneator then it would have been quieter and another issue would have been the big deal. He shoud be encouraged and the utility company that is getting power from him would do well to weigh in. They do at time make some noise in high winds however not anything really obnoxious.
I miss my wind generators and solar panels. Perhaps when more people can have them then the complaints will reduce.
Eyesore is purely perception driven.

Every farm in the midwest and ranch in the west has a windmill. I think it is a great idea and think the folks with the complaints should be looking for solutions. Can they invent a quiter windmill?
I've seen the modern ones and I think they are graceful and lovely, like dancers across the earth.
We need to live in harmony with nature, not conflict.
I'll bet a power plant in that neighborhood would be more of an eyesore!

I applaud the guy for wanting to save money and help the environment BUT he's right in town where his neighbors are right next to him. I see if he lived in the country and did this, it more than likely wouldn't be a problem with anyone. If the noise is bothering the neighbors then he needs to take the windmill down. It does kinda stick out. I would love to be able to put a windmill up but in my situation, I simply don't have the money to do it. I live in the country, surrounded by woods, so it wouldn't be a problem for me to have one up. Knowing my neighbors, they would want to tap into it as well. lol

You have I think the correct observation of this story. We really need a good, sustainable and cost-effective alternative to power generation. This could help lessen the impact of global warming which could really affect all the people on this beautiful but shattered planet we have. Maybe the neighbors of this person putting up a windmill have never the right amount of appreciation of this green and clean technology so much so that they are just thinking about their own comfort. Though I also believe that the neighbors have the right to complain on this matter. Well, if the neighbors will really insist for the removal of the same, then this guy should not just give up that easily. I am sure that there are a lot of place which could be right for this technology. He could be a big welcome here in our place except that my place is not really windy at all.

It's so nice to see such things. I feel it like a discovery if we do it of our own. I really like this sort of things and it helps to cut off expenses if done in a proper way.
Good posting.

I have often considered the idea of buying a generator, which would not only reduce electricity bills but would also be a great prtection against power cuts. However, a windmill strikes me as being a little overboard to say the least.
Nevertheless, if the man has room for such a construction, which he obviously has, then I am genuinely impressed with his ingenuity.
As for suing the town, this is the modern craze of suing for any excuse.

Yes it does work and I saw it you see I live in New Jersey too. I think its a great idea. But its alot of work and alot of money to build it.

The video is no longer available for viewing! Just my luck! I really wanted to see it, and possibly hear how loud it is. From the sounds of it, he must have built it without a permit, so why didn't anyone complain earlier? The neighbors must have know that he was up to something. I guess he's proved a point though, huh?

Please, like brown fields aren't an eyesore, because of the greenhouse effect. In Iowa, you see wind turbine fields almost everywhere. My parent's have a field almost 1 mile away from their house. I think that the wind turbines are less offensive than the cell towers that are popping up everywhere--disturbing my TV reception!
Here's a photo of a school in IA that uses the wind's energy. They use the money they save on things like BOOKS, TEACHERS, and BUSES! I'm sure they are more important than paying the energy bill. :)

AS far as the noise... The ones I'm familiar with don't make a sound. I have driven by them so many times, and I had to look to see if they were running. I don't know why the neighbors complain about the noise.
I think these neighbors are just jealous because they didn't think of if first. LOL! If I didn't live in town with a small lot, I'd have a turbine set up in my yard in a heart beat!

dang I wish I could watch the video, but I have such a terribly slow connection. Kudos to him, he should be given a responsible citizen award instead of all this grief. great ingenuity! maybe the neighbors are a tad bit jealous? shoot that savings he is generating is akin to having a part time job! over $4000 a year, that is nothing to snark at.

I think that is fantastic that he has saved so much money on the electric bill and that he is setting an example for others. I don't think it would be more noisy than anything else, like a window unit air conditioner running non-stop. I really think this guy is on to something! I just feel bad that they are persecuting him for his ingenuity.

Hi,
I would like to give my best wishes to him I hope this is very effective approach from his side but certainly there would be some defects too. As wind is the basic requirement here this is more suited were there is wind. Still this can be more utilised by well organised group or improvemnt in technology so as the noice or other irritative aspects can be eliminated so as to get the support from the neigbouts. I hope a bit more effective technological upgradation for this will certainly become a positive part to all.

If you have the space for a windmill, why not build one and use the power it provides? We really need to find alternatives to our energy crisis.

These other people are nuts complaining about this man, he is trying to do what he can to save the environment and they get angry, do they want their grand children or great grand children to have to live like cave men, because if we do not recycle and conserve what we can, the will be nothing left for them, I think this man is a genius.

Hi Estherlou, I wonder how much it cost him to set this up, I know solar panels dont come cheap. One neighbor say that it isnt any louder than a air conditioner and the other one says its to loud. If I was into conspirecies, I would think the power companies are paying him to sue the city for allowing this to happen. Are we just looking for reasons to sue or what? Take care, Terry

The buzz word nowadays is global warming and the corresponding life-altering disaster it could entail to all us living on this planet, no one is exempted not unless you are living in the moon. We must find all good alternative in generating the power we all need. Economic slowdown will be the result if we will not hear the warnings echoed all over the media. global warming is a very big reality all of us has to face.
To help slow down global warming, we need clean and green energy. Energy from the wind is one of the most viable source we could find. It is really clean, sustainable and cost-effective.
I applaud anybody who will invest for this type of technology. To that person who got complaints instead of appreciation, maybe he could also be in the wrong place and wrong people. Why not share some power with those complaining. Really, maybe it is just a lack of appreciation and understanding of his neighbors.
But really I do appreciate this good technology.

I think that the windmill is a wonderful idea. It is saving the planet. More people should be interested in doing this. I think that it looks nice in the video. Perhaps if more people did this, we could stop a lot of environment problems. I give him a thumbs up and would do it myself if I had the means.

Esterlou I did not look at the tape. I know about windmills and stupid neighbors. I live in a town where people complain about anything. I do not know why people complain about things like that. On of my nieghbors TV annitena is falling down, I feel that is an eye sore I have not complained about it. Some peoples trees are eye sores I do not complain about that. Now let somone try to save the enviroment and some stupid person will complain.
