How old do you think a teen should be before they should get a job? My son is 15 and he got his first job this summer. He's working at Boy Scout camp. He loves it and I think it's a really good experience for him. But I don't think I would want him to work during the school year. At 15 I think he should concentrate on school and being a kid.

I agree 100%- I think at 15- he should not work at all during the school year either- this is for playing sports, hanging out with friends- studying- you know school kid stuff- I would have no problem with him working over school breaks or the summer though-

Well it's normal to have that kind of feeling but in my opinion if your boy wants to work then let him work as long as he maintain good grades. Because one thing for us teens is that we want to know where our limits are and we want to be independent. So let your son be what he wants to be.

If you follow the labor law, it should be 18 and above. Below 18 is called child labor and should have permission from an agency handling it. These permits were given to child actors/actresses i guess. minors are supposed to be in school..we adults sometimes having a hard time pursuing studies and our work, much more with those kids. They tend to get lower grades because of fatigue.
It would be ok if they do it during school break to make their time productive so as not to engage in any vices.

I think all teens should have a job to teach them some responsibility and to help them stay out of trouble. My daughter has worked since she was 14 years old and she has been at the same restauant for a little over 2 1/2 years now. She loves it and they love her.
It is a small restaurant and I have people that we meet out in public just brag about how mature she seems for her age and how they would not go there all of the time if she wasn't there. She has actually ran the place while the manager was out of town.
Be thankful that your son has a job and that he isn't wanting to just run the streets.

I started working when I was 12 years old. Babysitting only but a job is a job I suppose right? You still need responsability. I babysat until I was 16 and then started working at subway AND babysitting and school...whew!!!! I worked at subway until I graduated. But I loved having a job and making my own money and having my own money.. Its good he likes his job too.

I think a summer job is a great idea and at 15 your son is probally ready for it and if anything like my 15 year can find a lot of things that they must have!!
I think during the school year they should concentrate on school but if they have energy and time then helping out at home or a relative is good. My two oldest sons (13 and 15) go and help thier Grandmother with the heavy lifting at her buisness. It isn't very often but they are happy to come back with $10 each for half an hours work!! Also it keeps Grandma happy.
Hope your son has a good time at Boy Scout Camp!!
