A New Addition to my Cat Family - Meet Clarence:-))

Clarence - It has taken 8 months to get Clarence to trust us

OK - so most of my friends here will know I've been feeding a stray cat for about 9 months now. He was a poor, sorry thing - too scared to come anywhere near me or any other human being. What has happened to him in the past must have been really bad. Anyway - over the past months I have been slowly and quietly integrating him into our lives. First I left some food on the driveway for him. Then when the weather was really cold, I left the garage door open just in case he needed somewhere to shelter, and left some dried food in there. Slowly he got that he didn't run away when he heard my voice - he just cringed back and looked at me fearfully, - but he hung around long enough to eat whatever food I had left when the coast was clear. Later, he would sometimes let me stroke his head, and later still he took to coming in through our cat flap at night, and sleeping on an old chair in the kitchen. Though he always ran away as soon as we came downstairs. But now - finally after 9 months, he has started coming in when we're at home too. He walks up to us, and looks up at us,waiting for a cuddle or some food. he has so much love in his eyes - if he could talk I swear he's saying thanks and that we have saved his life! I named him Clarence after the lion in the old kids' TV series "Daktari". I called him such because I thought he was cross-eyed like the lion in the TV show........... but now I think it was just that he had an abscess and some bad damage above one eye that has left it permanently scarred:-(( But his vision seems fine. Later I will take him to the Vets, as he needs vaccinations, and neutering, but I am leaving that for a moth or so, just to make sure he isn't so spooked by the car and the whole traumatic Vet thing, that he regresses and runs away again. Anyway - thought I would introduce him to my cat loving friends here. And I'm especially pleased to report that my other 5 fur babies seem to have accepted him fine - presumably because he has been around the neighbourhood for so long he is just like part of the furniture to them. And my precious little Lily loves him:-)) Anyway - here is his photo in my garden this morning. I didn't want to get too close as the camera would probably scare him (everything else does!), but at least you can see him!

Oh Rosie, he's adorable! His face reminds me of my Mimi cat's face, and I love his name. May you and Clarence and Lily and your other cats enjoy many happy years together! All of your cats are extremely lucky to have someone with a good heart such as yourself. God bless you and them! Btw, my sister had a similar experience before she finally got a stray cat that she subsequently named Moochie to come indoors and stay indoors! Now Moochie is just as friendly as can be!

Awww thanks for your lovely words. And I think I'm lucky to have them - my cats bring much joy and fun to my life! And I agree that strays can become the most frendly of creatures once they get over their initial fear. They have known the bad side of life, so they are just gentle and grateful for the chance to know something better.

Oliver & Pong - trying to get a good face on of Oliver, thought about reposting Hobo too
Oh, Rosie, he's a handsome devil! He's so lucky to have a wonderful person like you looking out for him. His story sounds like Hobo, minus the gapping absess in his neck! Once I managed to scratch Hobo's head, I had made a friend for life! But Clarence looks more like my Oliver. And I love & remember Daktari! Well, except for the chimp, I just don't like chimps.

Thank you! I think he's rather handsome too! Problem is, his fur is very matted at the back, and may need a Vet to sedate him to untangle it. But all in good time! Thanks for your response.

Hi rosie,I'm happy to know that Clarence is finally accepting you. Isn't it amazing what love can do? I've been in a similar situation for a while now, only this cat isn't afraid, just hungry. I believe she has a home, but appears neglected. I feed her and talk to her, but am not sure what to do besides that. I'll see what happens. Good luck with Clarence.

Well really that is all you can do at this stage. My friend did that with an unwanted neighbourhood cat for a while, - and in the end, one day the cat decided she prferred her to her real owners, and moved in! Cats are pretty smart creatures - they wll generally look after their own interests pretty well! Good luck, and thanks for your response.

Hello Clarence! Wow the others accepting him is wonderful, usually their little noses are put out of joint when another cat comes into their little home! He is a very lucky cat because he knows that he'll be thoroughly pampered and loved at your gaff! Happy times Clarence!

He is so cute! I love black and white kitties. I especially like the little black dot on his nose! :-D That's extra cute! I think it is so great what you have done! I had a similar situation with a cat I fed outside for 7 months, and finally decided to bring him in since he obviously had no family. He took to the luxuries of the house and the other kitties right away! Stray cats are the sweetest. I bet he is so glad he found you! Keep us posted on how he is doing!

He's so cute- and you are such a wonderful person for doing that- I am glad he has a happy home- I think he's gonna love it there...he couldn't have found himself a better place to live then with you and the family. When we first adopted Shamrock he was quite the handful- very loving but scared of everything...I am still discovering things and we've had him for three years. His most recent fear is green olives....LOL....Darren dropped a couple of green olives on the floor and of course Buca was there to eat them but Shamrock looked and it smelled it and ran away. So Darren was curious to see if it was the olives he was running from and he put one on a fork and went by Shammy again to see if he would eat it, well Shammy smelled it and started runnining in circles and barking at him....go figure....LOL. Wasn't Clarence the name of the Angel in the movie "It's a wonderful Life"???? Maybe he is an angel sent to you to watch over all of you. Well tell Clarence we said welcome to the family...yours and ours!!!!

Awww - poor Shamrock! He would hate it in our house - we both love green olives!! And I'm not sure if Clarence was the name of the angel in the movie - I will have to go and check it out. Thanks for your response and your lovely words my friend.

Aww--he's sweet rosie--does make you wonder what kind of life he must have had before and if he was mistreated--but goodness, Clarence couldn't have found a better place to be, and from the sound of it, I think he realizes that...I'm glad your other fur babies have accepted him, I just hope Lily doesn't get a bit jealous...after all, she was getting so much attention there for awhile--And yes I remember that show...always loved that lion :)

Tiger - Recent picture of the stray cat I feed
Hey Rosie, we can shake hands! I too feed stray cats around my place. But this female cat which I named Tiger (see attached photo), is my favourite. I have been feeding her for slightly over two years now. I find with many stray cats that to be their friend, you have to gain their trust over time. One easy way is to feed them by leaving some food around near where they are when you see them, then stand away and let them approach the food. Stray cats are always hungry and they seldom reject the food. When you have fed the same cat many times, slowly the cat will find you more friendly and approachable, and the cat will have the confidence to come nearer to you, and soon it will even come for the food when you are standing or stooping next to it. Some cats will still not let you touch or pat it initially, but after a few tries, when it realise the warmth of the touch and that you are not there to harm it, it will warm up to you. Then you will find that a relationship will develop between you and the cat. After that, each time you approach the same cat, it will call out to you or even run towards you. It will not be afraid anymore, and you will have found a new friend. That was how it was with Tiger. Cats can be very lovable when they know you well.
