What can be done to stop littering?

How can we stop people making a mess of our towns and countryside? Bestselling US author Bill Bryson is to head a campaign to stop littering. He has been appointed the president of the Campaign to Protect Rural England and wants to increase fines for fly-tipping and and people who drop litter. The author hopes to preserve the nation's countryside, which he calls "one of the glories of Britain". How bad is the litter situation in your country? How can we persuade people to clean up their act? Are fines a good deterrent?

I think a serious punishment will be helpful to it. Sometimes the high charge punishment isn't very effective, but if they have to clean the street in public as the punishment, I think they will be afraid.

Although things have been improved a lot,I still see littering and spitting from time to time here in my city.I have to admit fine is a good way to prevent these bad behavior but its never the best one.The key point is to raise the public awareness to protect the earth. So education is far more important. What do you think?

They have the cameras in place in certain parts in Los Angeles. But in the parts where people are most likely to liter and not care, the government doesn't care about it either.

I think the serious punishment for it will work. Singapore is a good example. It is very clean and nobody dares to litter. That is because you will be "fined" by a big amount and you have to be the cleaner for some time.

haha this may sound strange ... but here in one of our big cities ... they took away all rubbish bins... so people who had litter would not dump it there and take it home ..... guess what ? IT WORKED

Well, all we can do is try to pick up after ourselves and hopefully people will do the same for themselves.
