How can i add subtitles to an avi using mencoder?

I'm running mandriva linux 2007.0 and trying to subtitle some avi file. But somehow the subtitles don't get encorporated when reencoding with mencoder. When i run it in mplayer, they appear whout a problem. Any solutions or tips you can give?
