How do you keep your kids from catching colds or flu when you are sick?

For almost four years after my daughter was born, I didn't have one cold or flu illness. But, then last November when my spouse contracted a flu-like illness, I got sick as well. Even though I was super careful not to drink after him or do anything that might expose me to germs, as his primary caregiver it was almost impossible to avoid the germs. Ultimately, I think I picked up the germs by simply rearranging his pillows! Can you imagine? And, by some miracle, our little girl didn't get sick at all. I guess kid immune systems are stronger than we give them credit. While we were sick, I made sure to thoroughly wash and sanitize all dishes and anything that might have germs on it. And, I went a little crazy with the Lysol and bleach. I don't think germs stood a chance of survival!
This upcoming flu and cold season, I'd like to be better prepared, so perhaps noone will get sick. Does anyone have suggestions on making sure the family and kids don't get flu or colds? Are there any particular vitamins or minerals or herbs that can help protect the body against cold or flu germs? What type of cleaning precautions do you use when family members are sick so that others don't get ill as well?

Make sure you and your family keep washing your hands (not too compulsively) but anytime you are interacting with potential contaminants (coming from outside, money, textbooks). You do have the option of disinfecting surfaces but there is indeed a chance that some of the flu bugs will remain and worse become resistant strains.
One thing to do, is to try and keep your house warm, and make use of warmer environments. The flu is stronger and remains contagious depending on how cold it is (i.e. normal contagion at body and room temp, extended contagion time at lower temps). This is also part of the reason why you run a fever when you come down with the flu. You also want to make sure your children remain warm when coming from winter weather as the flu is strongest and most contagious in winter temps.
Healthwise, Vitamin C is a good immunity boost, Vitamin A and Vitamin D can help with winter based flu. Liver, milk, oranges, carrots can all help with this. I've also used lemons, light amounts of vinegar and tea to counter colds and flu. Family and friends told me my advise was effective so thats at least a few satisfied patients.
If you need anymore advice or anything give a holler queenie.

Also if down with the flu: Vitamin E can help with cellular health and fighting off the ill effects of the flu on the body in general. Green, chamomile and ginseng teas are worth a try as well.

Wow—that is great- not getting sick in 4 years- I would say the best way not to spread germs and sicknesses – is to be sure to wash your hands and your daughters hands all the time- We put our hands to our face all the time- so it’s best to make sure they are clean- We touch so many things that are covered with germs-

My Mum when i used to young , would get a lot of problems , !
With her getting her virus, cold , and flu ,
she used to be away from me and me sis . She loves us really ! she used to wake up early cook very carefully , with her mouth and nose and all that , covered with a piece of cloth and wouldnt come near us much !
Still ask some one to monitor us whether we eat or not .
And we cant get near her too , she wouldnt allow us to come , although we never cared , honestly , cold or flu is not something for which i feel OH AM SiCK ! ,but then thats the way she used to get away ! and keep the food closed and away from where she sleeps and stays !
and we used to clean the place whenever we get time :)

There was a time my entire family got bronchitis, but i didnt! I would think it works in the other direcetion too, though. Carry a bottle of lysol spray with you everywhere you go and disinfect everything you touch. Its hard, but possible. Make sure your contact with your kids is minimal otherwise chances are they WILL get it. Keep them taking their vitamin C and echancia each day. They wont help cure a cold, but it will help your body fight one off if it encounters one

My grandfather swears by Vitamin C for winter , and I tell you from experience , disinfectant spray and wipes keep them in every room , spray them frequently and wipe clean knobs and counters, tables .
I spray it in the bathroom every time I go , in the bedroom ,I spray when arranging the bed and after the kids naps, in the living room , every time I tidy up.
My daughter went to school for the first time last year and I had a newborn at home , so I couldn't risk a sneze , and this routine worked great in our house , plus the hand sanitizer all day.
Best of luck

The only thing I've had my husband do when he is sick, that is out of the ordinary, is to not breathe in my son's face. No kisses or anything like that. Besides that, we just go about everything like normal. And amazingly, my little one has never been sick. He's thrown up a few times when we had him drink our nasty water at our old house, but once we figured out that was what was making him sick, he has not been sick since. He's never had the sniffles or anything. Just an occassional sneeze, but never a fever or anything.
