I would use windows when you dont know much about programming and that stuff. Because linux is kinda hard when
you don't know much about working with Dos (like in Windows). I actually never used Linux be4 because i know i would not be able to handle it ;). The easiest would be Windows. + Vista looks great :D

Vista is pretty, but it sucks. It is very slow and resource intensive, although your right, it is pretty. Windows XP is the best Windows operating system at the moment, Vista may be good in a few years...

I recommend for a newbie like you to have a double operating system. Two operating systems on one hard drive, or if your really new, play around with a Linux CD just so you can get familiar with Linux, it is a little different than Windows. Or have a Linux distro tucked in a pen drive...but before you go full bore into Linux, cruise the Linux chat rooms. Linux has gotten a lot more user friendly over the years.

if u r a beginner, then my suggestion to go with windows as maintaining linux is bit hard
i prefer XP over vista
there is nothing that vista can and XP can't except the appearance.
if u want to go with linux, and want visual appearance and effects don't forget to load Beryl
