Why I really don't care what religion you are...

Having spent much of the early part of my life among drug addicts, homeless people, abuse victims, etc... I have met many people who worked very hard to get out of the situations they were in, and to make their life something positive and wonderful. When I think about it, most of those people were influenced by religion in some way. I can't tell you how many times I've heard... "God made me straighten my life out", "When I met Jesus, it all changed", "Buddha set the example I needed", "Allah would not be pleased with how I was living", "The Goddess touched my life", etc etc. There isn't really any religion I can think of that SOMEONE hasn't said made their life better. When people ask me why I'm so religiously tolerant, I usually just say it's because my Gods don't need me to find people to follow them, and that's true, they don't. However, there's more to it than that. The reason I really don't care what religion anyone follows is because so many different religions have saved people I know from destroying themselves. In my opinion, if any religion can do that for even one person, there's value in it. Comments, anyone?

Thats a good thing to live by. There is value in almost everything a person believes in as long as it leads them to something good. I don't think the sentence 'my gods don't need me to find people to follow them' is quite accurate. I am not judging or telling you how to bejust commenting my own thoughts. I think that every god or goddess would like those who believe and follow their ways of life to share with others. Not to convert but to educate. The more people who have the oopportunity to know and follow or believe the better. I wonder if someone who knows nothing about religion can just become religious. Can they? Wouldn't they have witnessed, read, or met someone or something to help them become introduced? Just wondering. It is good that you tolerate so much when it comes to religion. Not many people are. I like the fact that as long as someone believes or has knowledge of any religion, they are one step up to having a better way of life. So good for you. Hopefully others can emulate your tolerance.

I can see what you're saying, but I didn't mean that I don't ever talk about or share my religion. In fact, I can't count the number of times I've explained what "Celtic Reconstructionist Pagan" means, on mylot alone, not counting other websites or offline. It's not that I'm not interested in sharing my own experiences with my religion with others, but it is a matter of education rather than conversion. Thanks for your response. =)

Being of similar belief to Lecanis, and excuse me for this Lecanis, but I think what she was trying to say was that we don't have to heard people together to follow our deities. They find the deities themselves. We don't believe in persuading people to join our beliefs, in fact we tailor them much to suit ourselves. Therefore, Lecanis's statement that her deities don't need us to persuade people to follow them is quite true. We do talk about our beliefs, and we teach others who ask about it, but we won't go shouting from the rooftops that our way of life is right for them. Sorry again to intrude on this one, but I could see it from Lecanis's point of view. Brightest Blessings on both of you.

I agree. I always say find a religion that you can follow and be faithful. And I am so sick of people saying that their religion is the only way. They should say their religion is the only way for them.Everyone is different so there has to be different religions. It is only natural.I am very respectful of other peoples religions. And it makes me very angry if someone else isn't.Your religion is a very personal choice and it is a very big part of the person.so you should respect all people and their religions.

Exactly! I love the way you put all of that! I always say "My religion is right for me" because I believe that different religions are right for different people. And to presume to know which one is right for someone else is just crazy! Thanks so much for your response!

" The reason I really don't care what religion anyone follows is because so many different religions have saved people I know from destroying themselves. In my opinion, if any religion can do that for even one person, there's value in it." *applauds* BEAUTIFULLY PUT Lecanis and I agree with you 100% and feel the same way....I am a firm believer that all paths are worthwhile, valid and have benefits/positive influences for various ppl...Thats also why I get so bent out of shape when ppl (fundies from any path) spew off about how someone else is wrong for what they believe simply becuase that person doesnt believe as them...I have no tolerance for that...not only are they WRONG but that type of attitude is so arrogant ANY higher power would cringe IMO....

Thanks, Ravenladyj! You know, that's a good point you have at the end, about the arrogance of such an attitude. =P

Well said, Lecanis. I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. A person's beliefs will always see them through, simply because they think their Deity can pull them through. True, we all have our own deities but we each believe that they are right for us and that they are within us. So, live and let live, and we will survive. I disagree with all the arguments and fighting over religion, when none of us can prove a darned thing... it's just the belief we're comfortable with, and we all have the right to believe what we want to. Brightest Blessings, my friend.

Thank you, Lecanis... and my reason for saying that? We have our personal experiences with our deities, but nobody else sees, and you can never relate the experiences to another. :) I love the way you write things down. You put so much thought into everything. Blessed Be.

I agree with you, you really can't relate them to another. Even if you try to tell someone your story, it just doesn't come across with the same power it had when it happened. And there are so many things that just can't be shared anyway, because they are too intimate or too special. =) Thanks so much for your kind words!

Well really you only feel that way cause you need me to save you. Now set down and read these booklets I have for you. :oD I love reading your posts, you have a way of saying exactly how I feel. While I don't want to join anyone else in their beleif, I will fight for their right to have it in peace. Like you said, if it has helped or is helping someone to have it, leave them alone.

*giggles* Oh no not booklets!!! Ahhhhhh! Thanks for responding, sunshinecup! I really love how you said this: "I don't want to join anyone else in their beleif, I will fight for their right to have it in peace." Sometimes when I express that I don't have anything against a certain belief, people start to think that I am going to change my own beliefs, so I think what you said is a great way to put it.

Very well stated and I couldn't have said it better then myself. My thought has always been what ever makes you feel better. Religion, faith or whatever you want to call it should make you feel better. It should make your life better and not be something you dread or oppresses you. If it does then you don't have the right one for you in my opinion. So as long as you are happy with the path you have found then go for it. We should respect each others choices on religion and be happy for them if it does what they need it to do.

You are most welcome. I know myself I grew up with being Roman Catholic and found it wasn't right for me. I took the initiative to find one that was. Sometimes just because what is right for our parents isn't what is right for us, let alone for others.

I'm glad you pointed out the other side of this, emeraldisle. I do know some people for whom religious practice seems to be a chore or an oppression, and I do hope they find what is right for them someday! =)

Imagine Peace - You may think I'm a Dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And our world will live as one. ~John Lennon
A definite + for the topic!!! Not only that, I wish that I could also rate all of the responses. It really pleases me that no one but that ornery Sunshinecup has the leaflets to pass out! (LOL). It's quite a shame that we don't all think this way. It also seems quite trivial to quote John Lennon; but he said it all in his most beautiful song, "Imagine". I believe that you are too young Lecanis to really remember that song and the impact it had on my generation (a few removed from yours), but he really made several people come to a pause and think about a world with no religion living in peace. I agree totally that whatever serves the person for the betterment of their lives is the right thing for them. My only hesitation with this is the lost souls who are seeking in desperation for something to believe in and happen upon cults that take them in, make them feel safe, and then cause harm to their mental, emotional, and oft times their physical health as well. For these dear seekers, I light candles and ask that they be freed to find the light they were truly meant to find. This is a great topic. Thank you so much for starting it.~Donna

Thanks Donna! Well, I might be too young to remember the song coming out, but I have heard it and appreciate it. =p You make a good point on the issues of cults, and from now on I will remember to light candles for those seekers as well.

I completely agree with you. I don't believe in organized religion but I do believe in God and have faith. There are a lot of good religions out there that promote peace, love and harmony. I think that's admirable. I don't belong to anyone of them becuase there are so many religions in the world...it's hard to know which one is the right one. On the other hand there are religions and/or cults that promote hatred and violance. That I do not agree with because there's no way they originate from God.

You have a good point about promoting hatred and violence. I can't think of any religions that when followed in the proper way do so, but I have known people to twist the principles of certain religions to use them in that way.

Couldn't have said it better myself!! You really have a knack of saying something beautifully. I think people wouldn't be following any religion if they think it didn't help them, would they? I really don't know why people even try to force their own religion down other people's throats. The basic intention of following a religion is to improve oneself. If a person actually follows a religion, it should be that one should try to emulate one's own diety to the best of one's ability. I feel that is the best way to follow a religion than shouting out one's beliefs to one and all, whether they like it or not.

i agree, religion is not the major issue when we talk about changed lives in people. what i believe is that it is that person's personal walk with his God that matters. religion is an institution...when we talk about changed lives it usually comes from within the person, the willingness to turn around and make his life better. knowing and walking with GOd and deepening one's knowledge of HIm everyday, that's what changes lives.

I figure as long as you have Something or Someone supporting and guiding you in life, however it manifests itself or however you choose to express it, you're alright. The only thing I have an issue with is extremism; when someone deliberately and maliciously harms another human being in the name of a god or goddess. I can even tolerate some animal sacrifices, as long as they're done in a humane and respectful manner. Any true God won't cause you to destroy or degrade another one of his people. The basis is the same, but the expressions are different. It's when the basis changes into something ugly that you have a problem. I like this post. Blessed Be

I could not have worded this better myself! I am the same way...I really don't care about what religion a person subscribes to...if it helps them to be a better person and find a better life...kudos! The only time I find religion an issue is when someone hides in it to defend their intolerance for others. I too have friends that have been gone thru some great transformations because of various religions. I personally don't subscribe to any particular religion. I do pray and I am forever trying to better myself and my life. It is an ongoing and ever changing process.

I don't care what religion people are either. I may not believe in some of their religious values, but I'm sure they feel the same way about mine. I was taught that the important thing is to have God in your life. That's all that really matters, isn't it?

I agree with you what difference if someone is Catholic, Baptist, or any other religion as long as they are saved and also following the laws of our country. I do not want someone finding religion to be saved, and brained washed into thinking American's are bad, or a certain type of person is bad. I think cults are bad if they will not let their members leave when they want to, or if the leader thinks he/she needs to sleep with the members.

As I read in one another post, "God made Man and Man made the Religion". Religion was intended to be the guide for the men to lead a good and right life. But the purpose has deviated during the course of time and has become a reason for many problems nowadays. Good that some like you are very tolerant to the Religions and dont mind them.
