This depends on the number of drive bays that you have and whether you have a CD writer installed. If you already have a CD writer, then a DVD writer would be the obvious choice. Using different drives to read or write CDs and DVDs reduces the wear and tear on each one. You can also write a CD faster on a dedicated CD writer. If you are using a single drive then I would suggest using a combination drive to add features.

The combo drive can't burn DVDs. There is no good reason to get a combo drive instead of a DVD burner. They both cost the same price and the DVD Burner does more.

Definetly a DVD-RW. Can burn much bigger files to DVD than CD and can reuse RW discs.

It depends on a few things. You may choose from the option that best suits your needs. If you want to be occasionally buring a CD/DVD then you could for a DVD burner. However if you are in for ripping DVDs', creating your own music albums by ripping CD's and that kinda heavy stuff, a DVD combo is recommended. Also you need to think what amount of money you are willing to shell out for media and the drive itself. Both of these drives fit in very well in a bay. Also if you are already full there with maybe a CDROM drive, it's time you changed that. The CDROM drive is not going to add any value to your PC apart of emotional attachment I guess. I threw my 6 year old CDROM drive and bought a DVD Combo. It's been working perfectly. I have burnt more than 100 DVD's in the last 8 months that I have it and its been perfect! Also think about the media. With the cost of blank media for CD/DVD coming closer and the advantage of space of DVD over CD, I would highly recommend that you buy one that suits your requirement. Give this a thought and just do it!

I would recommend you a DVD Combo drive because my Notebook has a Super Multi Combo drive (no joke, this is its description on the package xD) and I can write on any DVD type from nearly any manufacturer. + - R + - RW RAM DL DS (DoubleSided) I think even DL DS XD but I couldnt try it yet because these DL/ DS dvds are still expensive. It only refuses some old 650 MB RWs and some DVDs from some manufacturers plus it seems to only want to write with 2,4x intead of the max. 8x but that doesnt matter for me. The faster you burn a CD/DVD the faster you can throw it away. I think I just got a not-so-perfect one but I still like it very much because except from some dvds/cds and the speed limit I can burn on everything ^^ hopes that helped you deceiding. PS: why buy a rom? a writer can read too?

A DVD writer can play DVD's perfectly well. If you only have one drive for a DVD devise, that is the way to go. * Playing DVD's can cause wear and tear to your more expensive DVD writer. The player is much less expensive. If you can put both in, I would and I have.
