if the sky is the limit,then what is space? can someone answer

I think the sky limits the space also. As I know in the middle between the earth and the sky there is the space.

Guess some would say that is the part between the sky and heaven? It is an interesting question. It reminds me of the funny question that Bill Cosby once asked "Why is there air?" It all sounds like a good question for a philosophy professor. Or maybe a religion professor?
