Selling knitted goods online - Suggestions?

I've been an avid knitter (and crocheter) for many years now, and I have sold my items at art festivals and at a local boutique. Now I'm interested in selling my items online and I am looking for suggestions. Has anyone here on myLot sold their knitted, crochet, sewn, or otherwise crafted items online? How did you go about it? Did you start your own website? Did you use online auctions such as eBay or etsy.com? How did you go about drumming up business? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I've got quite the inventory and I'm anxious to get it moving. Thanks in advance!

I opend an ecommerce shop and marketed my work to very specific target audoiences. Its going pretty well so far. The think with hand knitting tis to get yoru pricing right. We all know that if we charged the minimum legal wage per hour for our knitting it wouldnt sell, but you still have to be careful not to underprice yoru work and don't be too modest when you write your descriptions. If its wonderful, say so, if its got a flaw, point it out and make it clear the price is lower than if it was perfect. Online buyers can't 'feel the quality' you have to sell it to them in words and pictures.

You have a really excellent point about pricing. As most crafters, I have a tendency to under-price my work. When I sell my items at local festivals, one of my close friends actually does the pricing for me so I make what I deserve! :) Unfortunately, she's living in another province so she can't do my pricing at the moment. :) Thanks for your advice!

I always encourage people to try to sell their handiwork. I currently sell on etsy as www.effulgentcrafts.etsy.com. I have been selling there for over and year an would say I'm doing "ok". Not great, but no awful either. My items are kind of seasonal, so while I did ok in the winter, summer is fairly slow for me. Etsy is a great vehicle if like me, you are far too lazy to make your own website. They take care of everything for you! You just take pictures upload them and write your your listing. The fees are also very resaonable....MUCH more than ebay. On Etsy it's only 20 cents (US) to list an item. I put my mylot earnings towards my etsy fees in fact:-) While etsy is a community, it's a very large community. Some people will likely find their way to your shop eventually, but it's really up to you to drive traffic there. I got some business cards printed up and I hand those out to friends and family and post them on community boards. I also do craft fairs and festivals in my area and hand the cards out there. This way people can continue to buy from me during the "off-season" for craft fairs. If you are thinking about it....I would go for it! It's a low cost, no-risk way to see if there is a market out there for your work. Plus, it feels great to have someone out there like something you made so much that they want to buy it! Good luck!

Wow, thanks for the details on your experiences with Etsy! I checked out your shop, and your items are wonderful! I am in LOVE with your hand made knitting needles! The ones with the sheep on top are to die for. :) I like the business card idea, and I've already purchased some business card paper to use in a printer. I know they're not as professional as cards made up at a professional printer's, but I figure they'll be a start. :) Thanks for the good luck wishes, and I wish you luck as well! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.

Sister-Friend, I don't know for certain, but it seems to me that there is a "tutor" section on E-Bay that will tell you how to do it. If you have a certain supplier that you deal with regularly on Ebay, you could also ask them how they did it. Ebay also has a Community Forum you can join. Maybe you can get some answers there. I don't know the answer to your question but I hope that some of these suggestions will lead you in the right direction. I haven't gone to your home page, but do you have pictures of your pretties there? ~Donna

Hi there sister-friend! Long time, no post! (for me, anyway) :) I actually sold items on eBay before, just never any of my knit- or crochet-wear. I know generally how eBay works, but I guess I've never researched any strategy yet. I think I'll look over the tutorial and check out the Community Forum as you suggested. I don't have any of my pretties up online yet, but I'm working on that! I'll post the link when it's all ready. :) BB! Wyrdsister

I am also one of the crochet maker and have earned much with the hobby that have through word of mouth and to friends that I know but I have not tried selling it online, I never had the courage to and never had the guts to sell it. I am not confident that others would be interested with it specially the people from other countries. Of course they too have these great products thats available in the local area.

That's what I'm concerned about, too - that I might not generate enough interest for my items online. I can be hard to entice someone with your great products online because they can't be there to touch them and try them on. I'll let you know if this ends up working for me! Thanks for your response!

i also love to knit and have been knitting for a good while now also i have not been able to sell anything i have made yet but have thought about listing some of it on craigslist i think with the holiday season comming up soon it may sell easily i am just afraid that if i list it on craigslist i will not get the full price that the knitted project is actually worth my prices are not expensive just enough to cover materials and labor i would like to start my own website but i do not want to invest money into a domain name or anything like that so if i could find a site that lets you create a web site for free i would start my own selling center too
