My BRAND NEW Computer DIED ....

Don't you hate that .. you buy a new computer and then it dies?
Unsure what happened to mine, I took a leap of faith and purchased a HP Notebook last month and this morning it would not even turn on, I called HP Support and they had me removing hard drives and memory cards (I couldn't believe) and then NOTHING, notta, not a thing from this computer. They are sending me a box to place it in and send it to them.
I feel like I should have a memorial service for my computer, we have such a tight, close relationship and now it is being shipped off to who knows where to get fixed, I am just praying they can recover my hard drive.
Anybody ever had this happen before?

I bet you have a bad motherboard. I would not send it off without having someone else look at it first. If you do decide to chip it off, I would take the hard drive out of it before hand.

The majority of those warranties have a loop hole, if you take them to someone who is HP certified (or whatever company) or A+ Certified it usually will not void the warranty.

It is sad that something new breakes down so fast. It was a good thing it was still under the warrenty. HP usually does a fair job at repairing their stuff but they also seem to send out a lot of products that need to then be repaired. Most likely they well send you a replacement instead of fixing it and then fix yours and sell it as a referbished. If yuo have any personal files ask them if they can copy them onto a disk and send it back to yo. Other wise it has a good chance that it will be cleaned up.

I have HP notebook and I love HP. I don't know what happened to that computer but I have seen HP is a technology used in many offices and public places specially for handling many people so it seems to me it is a has a very strong product and durable at the same time. I have found all my University (Dallas) had HP items, all the PCs and printers and other scientific equipment etc. I hope by this time you have found your PCs fault and get better with it

Yes, I have. I like the HP computer, the touch is very nice, much nicer than the Dell's I have been using previously. They shipped me out a box and I fed exed it to them, had it back in a week with a new motherboard, but noticed that when they installed it back together they left off an error key so back to the shop it goes, hopefully soon I will get to enjoy it again.
Thanks for responding, it is truly appreciated.

Whoah! That's tough specially if your work or business depends much on that hard drive.
Whew, was that a defective notebook? Factory defect perhaps?
Now because of your topic, I have trauma buying new notebooks. Was thinking of buying one soon. I think I'd settle for desktops then.
=)
How things would be better soon.
Good Luck!

HP notebooks are/are becoming infamous for failures. And I've seen and even encountered all of the known ones.
1)For one thing, the power supply is poorly designed on an HP notebook. If you remove the AC adapter constantly (i.e. travel a lot) the prong that connects to the motherboard will bend and eventually break. Its a flawed design. You want to use the notebook as a notebook you are likely to encounter this problem. In fact HP is so aware of the problem but will not issue a recall. Instead a sidebar cable was created for HP laptop owners to temporarily circumvent the problem. HP didn't give this item to people with broken power supplies. Nope, HP charged anywhere from $70-100 for it. Now how does that make any of you HP customers feel?
2) Second, the motherboard is prone to overheating beyond what the ventilation will handle. I've seen people employ extra outer fans and even ice packs to prevent damage or auto shutdowns. In addition, the motherboard can also be damaged due to a broken power prong from item 1. Also there are some models where the side fan for the motherboard gets easily filled with dust. Too easily, it gets in to the motherboard and you'll have problems with that too.
3) Next is the hard drive. Several hard drives of the HP design are prone to fail randomly. Some need expert knowledge and commands of the c prompt in order to restore their hard drive. Recovery disk has also been known to not work on some HP laptop hard drives. Others had to send theirs in and get a completely new one. Again, not a good deal for people who like to data shred or those who want privacy.
4). The battery also came in with some issues. At first some worked correctly but within a years or so time the battery would barely hold a charge and would take several times longer to charge up. Some batteries would stall at 99% charging. I've seen these batteries run out in 15-25 minutes time, with the user doing absolutely nothing, running no programs, complete nothing.
5). Faulty USB ports. Though not as prevalent I saw some of that too on HP machines. It seems some of the left side USB ports on some pavilion machines would not work correctly or secure the device. This lead to a flash drive error in one case I read. Others wrote it off and just bought a hub.
6). Customer support. Although not a physical computer issue, the customer support is mostly substandard. There were a couple of good reports like IT specialists helping people recover their hard drive, but many either played dumb or they really were ignorant of the HP laptop issues. In once case a customer sent in their laptop for the power repair, but the laptop still didn't work and flickered out on battery power in a few minutes time. Another didn't get their laptop back from HP at all. Its something to really consider when thinking about your HP laptop or even considering HP products in the future.
Thank you for your time and attention everyone! Despite all the bad news, I do hope things turn out for the best. I hope you kept a record of this whole situation, it can be helpful in case something dire occurs.

Valyu, you are welcome. I'm glad it helped, thats the reason I posted it. I'm really believing more and more that informative posts and sharing experience online helps out, even if its 1 person, a few or many. Sorry to hear you had to deal with issues like the ones I posted, but at least you know you are not alone, and you also know to be more cautious in future notebook purchases. Some of what I posted in the list does not just apply to HP/Compaq, I've seen the power issue on various brands, since many decided to go with the thin prong method and not a secure, well built connection.

It has not happen to me, but then I do not have a laptop, but thank you for the warning. It makes me more determined then ever, that the next computer I buy will be a Mac. By the way, what make and model was it? Just in case, my husband wants to get a laptop and I can tell him what not to get.

did you bought an automatic voltage regulator for your laptop?maybe your laptop was damaged by unstable electric voltage, not the manufacture problem.especially when you use your laptop in storming weather day,it's will be damage easily.

My son and I both have HP laptops..both are 2 years old.
I am sorry to say that we have both had problems with both of our laptops.
If I were to do it over again. I would not purchase a HP.
I have had to dissect my son's and send back parts last summer for replacement parts. It works now, but still has problems and the extended warranty has expired.
I think the next time I will just go with Apple and be done with it.
Very disappointing...

LOL. Such things always happen to me. I bought 2 computers, and there were problems with both computers. My friend and I bought our computers at the same time from the same shop. I had to replace the harddisk while hers was ok. As for the second one, it was bought from the company's vendor. LOL. There was problem with the RAM and CDROM drive.
My third computer was from a second hand set from a collegue as he is migrating overseas. The computer keep screaming after a day of use. Suspected overheat issue, my friend shock the harddisk while troubleshooting. What luck.
Same when I buy any electronic equipment. I am rather apprehensive about what I buy after the 2 computers. Perhaps I am not meant to own anything expensive. lol.
