Having only tasted it once (and not been that fond of it) I would not be the best resource for information. Maybe an Australian will respond with a reference page or a good desription.
Basically it is a foodstuffs sandwich spread.

Thanks. I'm still new to all this. I really do hope an Australian can clarify what actually goes into that stuff.

What exactly is vegemite? Every time I hear the word I think of that song... maybe it's Big Country.... the one where he says "She just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwhich". I've always wondered what it was.

DJ Bounce describes it pretty well in his entry above.

The delicious bit I would argue with you, but the fact that banning it is a bad idea, I agree with.

All good Australians will attempt to take a small jar of vegemite with them as a reminder of home. The fact the US customs department has banned it is just not cricket!
It is a savory spread similar to marmite, though vegemite is older and more popular, especially in Australia. Marmite was introduced into Australia but was not very successful. In fact the Brits were so impressed with Vegemite they bought the company!
Aussie children are brought up on it. It's a very rich source of vitamin B. For those who have never tasted it, the first taste is usually a taste-bud explosive sensation and is nothing like you've tasted before. It is however, an acquired taste.
But we love it we Aussies.
