Have you ever had tetra breed?

Out of all the fish that I have owned over the years, I have never ever had any type of tetra breed in my tank. Now I am not a fish breeder at all, but it seems like almost every set of fish I have owned in the last few years has bred at least once naturally, without us even wanting them to breed. None of our tetras have done this. What about yours?

I'm not for sure on this, but aren't most tetras egg scatterers? If so, that would mean that the eggs wouldn't be protected, and usually the parents and the other fish in the tank eat the eggs, or if they do hatch, the fry would be eaten fairly quick. Also, most tetras need a lower ph to breed.

All I can say is that it isn't easy to have tetras spawn in our aquarium. There are many varieties in tetras and the easier ones to have known to breed in homes are probably Emperor, Buenos Aires, Lemon tetras. The common neon and cardinal tetras we see used to be only imported from South America until recently there are farm-bred ones. It is not easy breeding tetras, especially so for novice aquarists. Water parameters for breeding must not only be right, special requirements like larvae of Cardinals must not be grown in a lighted tank etc, need to be addressed. Most tetras will only spawn in peat-based acidic water and the temperature is to be dipped lower to trigger spawning. I've tried a few breeding programmes for cardinals at home but sadly were unsuccessful.

None of our fish have ever bred. I think we just don't have enough of one kind of fish. We do have tetras, and they haven't bred, either. Maybe there needs to be a lot more of them, or maybe they need certain conditions that don't come in most peoples' aquariums?

Although I have bred many fish, I have not had tetras in general. What kind of tetras do you have? My guess would be that they probably need a fluctuation in water temperature and/ or light to trigger the breeding season. Something else to consider is, usually one gender has brighter colors. You might have all males or females. I have a 125 gallon breeder tank with plants in it. I am considering filling it with water and creating plant aquarium with some fish to liven it up a bit. Once I created a similar 55 gallon tank. It was a complete ecosystem other than replacing the water that evaporated. The only filtration was the plants. Low maintenance is very nice. Sorry to stray from the topic. I haven't had anything breed that I wasn't intended.
