Rock At Jalan Batu Market Singapore

Rock At Jalan Batu Market Singapore - This is the strange rock in Jalan Batu Market, Singapore (Batu means rock in Bahasa Melayu). There are some mystery and history behind this rock:

1) It used to have an original inscription but was covered by cement.

2) The rock was said to stand in a "blood-bathed" slaughter market and the shape of the stone resembled a tomb stone. When viewed from above, the rock seems to be in a concept of being submerged in water.

3) This rock was said to be sacred and people gave offerings of joss sticks to the rock.

4) On the upper levels of the market itself, shops near the rock seemingly resembled a typical chinese funeral parlour.

This rock was never meant to be found there in the early days, but it was somehow mounted in the middle of the eating place after a major renovation of the market and hawker centre. Apparently, the location of this area used to be a cemetery! Many people mentioned that this rock resembled a tomb stone, and an open space at the 2nd level of this hawker centre also resembled the look of a typical chinese funeral parlour. It seems that back in the olden days, this hawker centre used to be a cemetery although it hasn't been verified. The only thing confirmed was the location of this standing rock was that it used to be a chicken slaughter house in the market and people recalled/remembered seeing chicken blood flowing into a nearby drain every morning. In actual fact, this location was formerly a community centre/cub on an old street directory map.
