awwww i dont understand a woman who would want to do thins. But i see it happens... I dont even know. See i cant ever relate to see if its a hate thing. or a confused thing. I dont know what makes a person think and do this. so in that case, its hard to think of a "correct" diciplinary action to take.

Friday, November 03, 2006, on the OPRAH show: interview with a young mom who abandoned her baby to die. OPRAH asks her: "Why'd you do it?"

I could never even imagine a good enough reason to do something so horrible. I think mothers who harm their babies should get in alot of trouble!! I just cant understand why anyone would want to hurt such a precious little person. And how they could live with themselves after it.

It seems to me that a mom would have to be disassociated from her own body as well as from her baby, and maybe its a function of mental illness. Should she be hospitalized?

There are hospitals for crimminally insane; prison mental institutions with enforced therapies, medications, etc. as opposed to a women's prison without psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. I haven't changed my mind.

Are you kidding me? So do you think that Susan Smith should be in treatment. These girls are one step shy of killing their kids, and you just want to give them medication and therapy? That child didn't ask to be here, and there are so many other options (as opposed to leaving them in a dumpster or somewhere to die). I mean REALLY what ever happened to personal responsibility? When does that come into play? With adoption as an option, birth control, abortions, fire stations willing to take the child, etc. open as an option, these women don't have the right to even try to say that they are insane. Even animals have enough sense to guard, and protect their offspring. Come on now!!!

Yes, they need to be in jail so they wont do it again. How could someone just abandon the baby when she carried the baby for 9 month in her body? Some mother want to stay with the their babies. Mothers who dont care about her babies, they need to get herself fixed so that she cant do it again.

There was one girl who was pregnant, hid her pregnancy, went to her high school prom, delivered her baby in the bathroom, put the baby in the trash, and went back to dance. She's in jail.

A few years ago, there was one young woman who placed her newborn in a dumpster, the family had alot of money, the young woman did not go to jail, rather instead, she did "community service" and appeared on television to tell her story.

yes. They should go to jail. They also should lose all parental rights, and rights to any future children

I agree. How can a mother who's abandoned one baby, be trusted to nurture another?

I think they should have a mental evaluation and treatment, as well as jail time.

Not only do I think they should be punished they should also undergo mental evaluation. It's not natural for a mother to harm a baby. If it is an unwanted pregnancy, put the baby up for adoption. They are many couples that cannot conceive that would love to have a baby.

YES, YES, YES...Oh did I mention YES?
If the mother has a mental illness, suffering from post-partum depression etc... by all means give them the mental health help they need but do so WHILE they are incarcerated.
The moment that child is in existance it is a viable life...I see no possible justifcation for such a thing (and I am mom to 7)...VERY few babies come into this world because they were planned or with Mom and Dad feeling prepared and ready for dealing with parenthood, but most of us could never discount a life so easily...especially that of our own flesh and blood. If you walked up to a stranger on the street and tried to commit cold blooded murder, you would pay a serious price for that act...these women are worse...at least with a stranger on the street, that individual has some ability to resist, to fight back, to run...something...these newborn babies are totally defenseless

In many areas of the US (and world) if you leave the baby at a safe place--police station or hospital you can't be prosecuted for abandonment. Many people don't realize that and just dump their babies any where which is sad. In the US if you take the baby to the desk at the hospital before it is a couple of weeks old and say you can't care for it anymore they will take the baby--no questions asked and you are free to go. You can even get the baby back before it is a couple of months old if you can prove you can care for it then. Most people just don't realize that.
If a person throws their baby in the dumpster or leaves them to die then yes I think they should go to jail--that isn't just abandonment, that is attempted murder or if they die it is murder.

Safe Haven for Newborns...I have a different post about Safe Haven for Newborns. Any baby 72 hrs of age or less, may be surrendered by parent or legal guardian at a designated "safe place" --the regulations on newborn age are being adjusted to allow older newborns (older than 3 days of age) to be surrendered safely.

Depends on where they "dump" them. There are laws inplace that women can take babys to police stations, hosp, and churchs so they dont feel like they have to dump them. Sometimes its hard on a person to care for a baby, I may not agree with them. But it does happen. So no I dont think they should go to jail if they, took the baby to one of these places. Now if they just left the baby in the side of the road, or trash can or something, yes... I say punish them to the fullest exeption of the law. There are place that are equipt to handle children not wanted, are are set to not ask questions, but provide a safe place for the baby.. Just my two cents.

Surrendering a baby to a designated safe haven for newborns is not a crime and is not dumping a baby.
I refer to mothers and fathers who leave a baby on the side of the road, in dumpsters, toilets, gas station bathroom trash cans...where babies are born alive yet die.

Yes! They have to be in jail!, in the first place why do they have to get involved in that thing if they are not ready to have a baby

I do not believe it is safe or right for a mother who deliberately killed her newborn to be able to give birth to another child and keep that child. I do not think this mother should be allowed to ever get pregnant again.

Absolutely! A baby is a precious human life. Dumping a baby to rot, and starve of hunger is murdering a innocent life. I cannot understand how could a mother do such a thing. They can give it up for adoption if they can not take care of the baby.

Yes, adoption is definately an option, and at least, a mother or other legal guardian may safely surrender a baby 72 hrs or younger to a designated safe place at a hospital, fire dept, or police dept.

Yes, if a mother dumps her baby, she should go to jail. When a baby is abandoned, its life becomes endangered...newborns need to be fed and kept warm...abandonment compromises both of these.
If a woman doesn't want a baby, she shouldn't become pregnant, point blank. If she doesn't want a baby, yet still becomes pregnant, she should give to child up for adoptions. Babies are human beings that are completely dependent upon others...just leaving a newborn somewhere is cruel and inhumane. I think it is one of the worst crimes that can be committed.

the reasons why some mothers dump their babies are: because of unwanted pregnancy or because they cannot sustain the needs of their babies. i think they should not go to jail but go to an institution where they cater women who are unresponsible to their babies or children wherein they teach these women to love their children. sometimes we cannot blame these women who dump their babies, i guess some of them are wishing that their babies may find a foster parent who can support them. so i guess jail is not the appropriate place for them but an institution who would take care of them and teach them....

I don't understand why these mothers do not give the baby to a safe place, put the baby up for adoption, or in some other way get help, when here in the USA, help is everywhere.

Yes i believe that mothers who abandon their babies should go to jail! If u fall pregnant and u don't want the child then that is what adoption agencies are for. If u choose to keep the baby and it gets to hard they should get help, no child deserves to be dumped, its not their fault

I think absolutely unless they take advantage of the laws that allow them to walk into any hospital or police station and surrender a baby, no questions asked. With SO many loving and caring families willing to adopt a baby I don't think any mother should be optionless. If we didn't have the safe surrender laws I think our abortion rates would be higher and our baby adoption wait times even longer.
IF however, by abandon you mean simply dump a baby in a dumpster or out on street than YES! Absolutely she should be prosecuted and go to jail.

Yes. That is a crime and SHOULD be punishable with jail time.
ESPECIALLY becuase options DO exist for an unwanted (by the mother) baby to recieve a loving home no questions asked. ANY hospital...ANY police staion.
....tragic.....

Hi, we're talking about mothers who abandon babies left to die in alleys, dumpsters, or trash cans. Safe Haven for Newborns is an alternative to "dumping" a baby, and safe haven programs are available in 47 states in the USA. 3 states have legislation pending for safe haven for newborn laws. In spite of designated hospitals, police departments, and fire departments where a baby may be safely surrendered with no questions asked, babies continue to be endangered or killed by mothers who won't take advantage of options.
