it depend on your friend, i think. how long do you know each other? does he know you can pay back his money? is he trust in you? why do you need money? what for? these are the questions depend what will he say.
If i was you i asked the next (for example):
Dear friend, i have in trouble i lost my whole monthly income and i have no money to pay the bills, the rent and buy food. can you help me with money for 1-2 month? I will pay it back when I got paid, but there's a short time I can't do anything to get money.
of course, tell the true, it was an example

When I first moved out my first and last month check bounced for whatever reason. So, I was sunk. I had a lot of money on hand from moving to buy supplies which went to making up for the check but still needed a little more.
I talked to my cousin about it and she offered the money. In that situation I didn't ask, but I would have asked her since I have known her for eleven/twelve years and have gone through a lot together.
