My family and I always throw our spare change into a huge water jug. No matter how hard we try, the jug just never fills up! I wonder if it could be... the fact that we are always dipping into it for snacks or movie tickets etc.
How can I get my jug filled to the rim? How can I apply the disipline needed to keep our little fingers out of it so that it will eventually fill up? Any Suggestions?

My goodness we tried the same thing and never was able to get it to the top. We were dipping into it too for stuff. Not snacks though but important things that come up that you don't expect, like car repairs and stuff. The most I was ever able to raise was 400 dollars but that is all gone now. I would like to start up again when money gets better but for now the day before my check comes in I am counting out the pennies to get some milk. It is too hard right now. I think the best way it to get something that you can put the money in but can't take it out unless you break it. It would make ya think if you really need that money now or can you make it without it.

400! Dang, I wish we could get up to that far. The kids are always tipping it over for something when they blow through their allowance. Brats eh?
I've been there counting out change for milk etc... it is hard. I hope things get better for you super quick!
I like the idea of putting the change in something we would have to break, yaya that's good idea!

Wow, no suggestions on how to stay out of it... but just wanted to let you know that I've started doing this about a year ago and I have quite a lot of coins saved!I'm planning to cash mine in this week to use as Christmas money! I think I've probably got close to $100 in there, because there are a lot of quarters and dimes...

Ah! Excellent job!
I wish my family and I could keep our fingers out of the change jar.
If the kid's alone would leave it be, we'd be millionaires!
Okay..nickleaires? hehe
Have fun Christmas shopping!:)

The only thing I could suggest is to roll up the money and put it into a bank account. I think everyone tries to save change for a rainy day. Ours was supposed to be for a vacation. *sigh* We spent it on other things.

Hi ElusiveButterfly:)
I used to roll my spare change up, but I never got it to the bank. There it would sit; neatly rolled up, and even easier to spend. lol
We tried saving for a vacation too, it didn't work out for us either.
Maybe we should hire armed guards to stand over our change jars and piggy banks. hehe

My husband does that but he doesnt use a big waterjar. I think thats the problem you need something smaller because when it fills up its great to go cash it in. So you wont touch the change jar you will want to fill it up. I think it gives you more insentive. A couple of times that jar has come in handy.

Hi TerryZ:) You're probably right, we do need something smaller. Maybe since it's so big; we think it doesn't matter if we dip into it, because it never seems to do any good NOT to.
It's a horrible thought...but it may be time to retire the grand ole jug. Poor old thing.

Lol. I understand what you mean. My husband and I are having the same difficulty here. We keep our coins in a huge bottle. However we kept digging it to buy ice-creams or junk food. Furthermore the grocery store is just within walking distance, and we like munching on something while watching the television. However, I've made something which I think can be used. I didn't tell my husband where I keep the bottle now. So I am in charge of the bottle now. I hide it somewhere and after putting all the coins there I will just forget it exist there and when we want to buy anything we just use notes. All our change goes in the box and now it is halfway to the top. I hope this time we can fill it up, I am so excited about it. Lol. Good luck to you. Maybe you can do the same.

Hi Ladysurvior:)
I can't believe I never thought of hiding the jar! That is an absolutely brilliant idea!
Right now it is in the den where we can easily drop our change into it, and that makes it just as easy to take it out.
I wonder if I move it, how long it will take the kids to realize that it has gone missing. lol

Personally, what I do is that I don't touch any change that's less than a quarter. If it's a quarter, you can keep it. If it's anything less than that, it goes in the jar. I've actually been able to save up enough change so that when I go to cash it all out, it's around five to ten dollars.
Because no one really likes carrying around dimes and nickles. Or, at least, I know I don't.

That's a great idea! I'm going to tell everyone to keep their quarters. With a family of five, it should finally add up pretty quick maybe.
Thanks for the idea!
