As some of you know, I'm not what you would call a religious type of person. I suppose you could say I mainly believe in science, but I do have a sort of spiritual side. I've been thinking about trying Buddhism though. I want to find my inner peace rather than worship. So I'm wondering if any of you know anything about Buddhism and I would like your advice to me. Thanks!

You and I are alike my friend, I'm a scientist yet I have a religious side (many narrowminds can't stand this, but who cares about what they think about you or me). I don't really know much about buddhism but you have free will and you can live your life however you please. Live, make choices you are comfortable with, support your fellow man, do no unnecessary harm unto another, believe what you think is right.

Thank you programer. I can't agree more with you. That's what I like about Buddhism. It tells you to do what you think is right. :) Oh and thank you for telling that 'ucanbeasurvivor' person off. I'm going to send you a friend request. :P

I wasn't trying to tell her off, I was simply trying to point so a differing perspective. Ucanbe is one of my friends on here and I try to support her too. We are usually found trying to help and support others and I've found her strength very comforting.

I HIGHLY recommend that you look into Buddhism if you are searching for inner peace rather than looking for that outter worshiping thing...I've been practicing Buddhism for a good few yrs now and it really is a beautiful philosophy and way of life...If you can find it at the library I recommend a book called
Awaken the Buddha Within by Lama Suyra Das....its a fabulous book and geared more to the Western World so to speak....in fact many of his books are excellent but if you are curious I would definately check that one out....
also a link online that maybe of help to you is (two links actually)

I don't understand why people become so opinionated during religious discussions. You simply asked for more information on Buddhism; you didn't tell people to convert. I think you should definitely check it out and learn all you can. Good luck to you Cait!

I dont know much about Buddhism so I would recommend researching it online. I am sure that thereis a wealth of knowledge somewhere out in cyberspace about the subject. And asking here on Mylot you might find others that support the religion. Good luck!

Hello, well honestly, science is not a contradiction from the Bible, don't you know that the Bible is an advance science? I remember a guy when he says he don't believe in God,He never exist for he never see it with his eyes. Then, the guy was asked, are you sure your parents were your real parents? Then the guy said, yes! then, he was asked, How did you know? Have you seen them while they are making you?" caitbaby, please do search... I am encouraging you to visit this and ask... http.esoriano.wordpress.com . Good day.

My sister is a Japanese Buddhist. She's in training to be a priest. So I know more then some, but a lot less then I'd like. I would recommend going to the library and getting out some books - or even, going down to your local zen center and sitting in on some Dharma talks. Afterwards you can ask for recommendations on books. I especially recommend the buddhist cookbooks as the ones my sister owns are filled with both humour and wisdom, the perfect ingredients for life.
I like Buddhism because in the search for knowledge it gives credence to what they call the sixth sense , the mind, which science doesn't always awknowledge as science takes its data exclusively from the five senses
Buddhism states that the mind is verifiable truth. Without this sixth sense we are deprived an immense amount of sense data. In Buddhism, unlike science, the mind has a prominant role in the search for knowledge, unlike science which must resort to instruments - created for the five senses - (mostly eyes and ears) to study the thinking process. Think of the encepholgram - or the eeg which measures the electrical activity of the brain.
Great question, you will likely get a multitude of answers - happy research!

You're right Pro, nothing seems set in stone for science. A theory scientists take seriously is usurped by another.
Thanks for your perspective, as always.

Some science does acknowledge the mind and it depends on what aspect of science you are looking at, dream for one thing, mental processes/personality for another. Its very deep science and just when you think its all about one thing, you find something else that questions it or considers something different.

Hello
You said that you mainly believe in science and I think that the first step to be a religious , is to Believe in the existence Of the Creator Of this Universe, in another sentence to believe in the existence of the God,
I'm a Muslim and Of Course i believe In the existence of the god, His angels, His Books, His apostles, and make no difference between any Of his apostles as described in the verse 002.285 Of the holy Quran
002.285 The messenger believeth in that which hath been revealed unto him from his Lord and (so do) believers. Each one believeth in Allah and His angels and His scriptures and His messengers - We make no distinction between any of His messengers - and they say: We hear, and we obey. (Grant us) Thy forgiveness, our Lord. Unto Thee is the journeying.
and back to the point about the existence of the god Here is two discussion about the issue By A Muslim brother

Looking for your inner peace does not need for a search for any religion. You must have FAITH! That is the only thing you should have to have inner peace in your life. If you had faith relying your life to God's will, putting your trust in
Him. Hope you could find the peace that you've been searching!!!!

hey! i know all sumthin' sumthin' about buddhism, my sister once interviewed a buddhist once for a project or a study i think. If your looking for inner peace then that's a good religion. Well actually, it's not a religion so much as it is a philisophy, that was according to the buddhist. also, if you want to be a buddhist, you have to shave your head, it's part of their tradition, that was according to the buddhist my sister interviewed. Don't know if this is accurate but i hope it helped!

I think that there is a difference between religion and spirituality, and it sounds to me like you are searching for spirituality more than an actual religion.
I call myself a Pagan because when people need me to define it for them, that's what my beliefs fit in best with. Religiously, I'm not sure I could ever really fit anywhere. I don't feel like I could fit within the "confines" of anyone's definition of what I should believe.
However, I do know that I believe very strongly in what I know to be true for me. And a lot of it is similar to Bhuddism. There is a karmic law, and there is reincarnation, and there is a search for enlightenment and a sense of higher self.

Yes you're right. I am looking for spirituality as opposed to religion. I have also looked into paganism and it seems like something I could really get into. I think I'm just trying to do what's right for me now. I'll have to do some more research though. Good repsonse! :)

Hi, Caitbaby. I do believe that every body has one religion or belief to suit with. No matter christianity or Buddhism, you'll find one fit for you. It is suggested that Buddhism is the exact one that peaces someone's mind and enlightens one's view to the life, the world and everything.
Buddha is just like a mentor, guiding you cultivating yourself and find the answer and truth to your life, to anything you want to know. But all of these must be done by yourself.

I'm like you! I believe in science and spirituality. I do yoga everyday and meditate. Last winter I toured East Asia and saw many Buddist Temples, and Monks in their Saffron Robes.I was not impressed with Buddism. Its like the Roman Catholic Religion only more so. Everything is covered with Gold leaf which was purchased on the backs of the Poorest People in these developing countries. However if you are curious, by all means give it a try. Perhaps you will enjoy being a Buddist!

I checked it out and I'm not completely sure about it. I agree with the teachings of Buddhism. It seemed like something I wanted to do but I will have to think about it some more. I think I would like to try yoga and meditation. I get very irritable sometimes so I think it would help out a lot. Anyway, thanks for responding! :)

Hello! I have been studying a little about Buddhism, but not enough to actually give advice on the subject :)
I just wanted to let you know that no matter what.. follow your heart and your own common sense.
I sorta shun people that try to push their own personal spiritual/religious preferences on other people. No religion is right or wrong, and if others try and persuade you that their beliefs are right or the only true way, then they are not what I consider very good company!
Good Luck to you on your journey :))))
