Why Use Default Avatar?

This might sound silly to some, but I mean no offense. I can't help but notice all of the myLot folks that use the default avatar. I have to ask myself why this is. To me, the purpose of using an avitar is to identify yourself. I don't consciously do it, but when I am scrolling through discussions some avatars are so familiar to me that I immediately know who made the post. I think that if you choose not to use an avatar that is identified with you, you could just be overlooked.

Why? Never really bothered me? No time? Plus, its not like you're actually placing a real picture of you there. i don't think the one you are using right now is the real you, right? Anyway, to each his own i would say. i barely look at the name of the person who posted something much less look at the avatar, i concentrate on the discussion at hand, trying to decide whether i have something to say or contribute. Maybe one of these days, when i am really certain of my existence here (ha, meaning i dont get bored ;) perhaps I may change things, including personalizing my profile. I posted a newbie question a few days back, and the first advice people gave was to read the guidelines, hehehe I still haven't, so definitely avatars is not a priority at the moment :)

I must say, candy, that your attitude is awfully smug. And, no, my avatar is not a picture of me. I don't have any pictures of me on my computer because I have no means to upload one. So when I went shopping for my avatar I decided to find one that reminded me of myself during my "salad days." You probably don't even know what that means.

There are probably a myriad of reasons for members not uploading an avatar. The recent members are obviously still in the process of finding their way around Mylot, so the avatar will still be low on the priority list. Then of course there are those who are rather unsure as to whether they will be staying at Mylot, and of course many people will be uncertain of how to upload an avatar or even how to create or acquire one initially. The members that surprise me are those who have been at Mylot for a while and just have not bothered, because I feel that an avatar is an important feature. Nevertheless, it is a personal choice and I would not criticise someone who chooses not to bother with one.

My question was not meant to be critical, asylum, only curious. I had a couple of stock avatars that I always use on file in my computer. Maybe I was wrong to assume that most everyone did. I like the fact that There is something that my friends can look at and immediately identify me.

Because some people have nothing better to do than to try and "earn money" here. They don't care about the outcome.

Gotcha, Alphasee! Of course you're right. One responder even said she didn't take the time to read the guidelines, lol.

I drew my avatar. It reflects a part of my personality. I am a Star Trek fan, it is a Vulcan. It is also easy to see and identify. * Some use the default because they've not found an avatar that identifies them or they are intimidated by the photo upload process. I do identify folks by avatar then by screen name. Sometimes the screen names are less memorable than the visual image.

You must be very talented, CC. As I said to some of the others, your avatar should reflect something about you whether it be your sense of humor, or, in my case, reflecting back to another time. I really get a kick out of looking at mine.

I don't like the default avatar. I find that I know who I am responding to just by looking at the avatar. I don't even have to look at the name. One day I was scrolling through Mylot and there were no pictures, just names. I was like, who is this? I couldn't believe how much I rely on the avatar. Even if they don't use their picture, just any photo would be nice..Sometimes (and I don't want this to sound rude) it seems like they are unsure of themselves. It doesn't say we have to put a picture of ourselves on it. Anything would be nice.

That's exactly what I was thinking, Feona. They have sites with such great avatars on them that it can be hard to choose just one.

A person can just search 'free avatars' and hundreds of sites come up... the hardest part is picking one!!LOL

I haven't changed an avitar on any other site. I just don't see the point anymore. I don't see the need to put a picture up anymore unless I get somehting out of it. One site gave me points for doing it. That site went under fast.

I tend to overlook the default avatar...I have not really notived until you mentioned it..But I do think that they should at least put some sort of picture in there.

Yes, Calais, because it's not that time-consuming to upload a photo, or go to one of those sites, select one and you're in business. Of course I don't expect it to be important to everyone. I was just curious as to why the ones who don't have one-don't.

Thanks for the compliment on my choice of avatar, Aurone. The problem with me I guess is that I've never been one to just want to blend in with the crowd. When my friends see my avatar it lets them know that I am here at work on myLot.

I know it's weird to me too. I can understand that maybe a person who has just joined might still have the MyLot default avatar as maybe they don't know how to add a photo as an avatar...took me awhile to get the hang of it myself..LOL But I think within two days or so of being here I had my "famous" avatar that everyone recognizes...But when a person has been here awhile, like several months it does seem strange to have it. I like to think our avatars are a reflection of our personalities, and it doesn't necessarily need to be a real photo of us--I often look at one's avatar more than the name and recognize someone...Like I knows yours by heart...even remember the other one you had which I liked-- the woman with her hand resting on her chin and looking either sad or maybe bored??..looked like a pre-Raphaelite painting...see I remember??--LOL

You are right on all counts, pyewacket. I also feel that our avatars should reflect our personalities. Like I've been telling some who were rude enough to say they bet I don't look like my avatar, It looks a lot like I used to look back in my heyday, lol. It's also helpful when you go through your friends list looking for a certain person to contact. If they have a picture it is much easier to find them.

That is true, but not all people look at avatars this way. Many people just come here to post subjects and reply to them or to other discussions. They do not really care about avatars or costumising their profiles. That is a shame but we have to deal with that.

I think it depends on how you identify the users, if its based on their avatars, it really matters if they don't use an avatar. It can be confusing. If you identify them with their usernames, it does'nt matter. I identify users with both their avatar and username, so, even if they change their avatar, i will come to know of the change. But i for sure will be surprised.

My point exactly, ILU. I think it is so much easier to respond to your friend's discussions if you can easily identify them without having to go through all the names. I can't speak for anyone else but some of the names are difficult for me to fathom.

HellO! Since i've signed up here in myLot, I reckon I changed my avatar I dunno how many times LOL!. You're correct that avatar is good to identify yourself from the other members. At first, everytime I see a member using a default avatar, the first thing that pops into my mind is that she's/he's a new member but that's not always the case. Some already have a star and made lots of posts and still haven't change their avatar. Well, I guess they haven't found the avatar they like and still looking or they just don't fancy changing it. In fairness, the default avatar looks okay.. *smile* take care. ciao! txel

Well, fab, I can't agree with you on the default avatars, but it was just something I was curious about. I know when I first joined a forum I did not like the default avatars they had. That made me search for a site where I could find a selection. It's perfectly ok if some want to use the defaults. I just like the individuality of my avatars. And, yes, I noticed that you have changed again.:D

may be some people think that is not an important thing and some people think of good look so they will upload a good picture

Wise1, I think that maybe some Mylot users may not know where to find an Avatar to use or they don't know how to load it into there profile. When I first started here I had some difficulty So, maybe others do as well. I do agree with you that life becomes easier when you recognize certain people over a period of time and their face(AVATAR)becomes familiar. It's like seeing an old friend walking down the street.Immediately you know who they are.

That is so true, pismeof. I've gotten so good at recognizing them that I quickly pickup on it when someone changes theirs. It's sort of like your brand name.(:

maybe those using the default avatar just have not figured out how to get a personalized avatar or they just have not decide what to use.

I like to use my avatar.I like my kitty because shes cute and small.I would like to put my picture but i dont know if it would be a good idea or not.At least people would know who"peanutjar"was and looked like. Its hard to tell sometimes who your speaking to;man/woman?But if you use a different avatar,i look at the picture;like yours and say, this is a women, very attractive and seems nice to talk to.Are you native? From your picture thats what i see.The advatar should reflect the real person behind it,its very easy to become confused by some, because it sends off different response signals in your head.

The whole idea of having an avatar, peanut, is to have fun with it-be whimsical. I am part Native American, but I am much older than my avatar. I decided that if I was going to have to look at a picture that represents me, I might as well get a youthful version of me.
