comics are for kids?

We were having lunch when it started to pour. We were considerate enough to allow others to have our table since we are already done, but we have no umbrella. Our only resort was to "shop" at the nearby vegetarian store which has lots of complimentary books (religious books though).
I glanced at the shelf. The books were not thick but wordy. The titles attract me, I flipped through and put it back. Finally, I found one which is full of cartoons. Yes! This is what I don't mind. Comics style illustrations. It appeals to me much more than the rest. My colleague was stumped at my choice. "Comics are for kids." lol.
Friends, do you agree that comics are for kids?
Given the same book to read, one which is wordy and one which has picture illustrations, which book would you choose? The wordy one or the one with comics?
Am I childish to look for a picture book to read? Kindly enlighten me :)
Thank you.

why would comics be for kids? THere are many comics that actually started out aiming for adults and made it big with all ages. I"m thinking about mafalda from Quino that actually started out as a series of cartoons to promote electrical appliances and became a success with fans from all ages.
The idea seems to be that a big wordy books is more mature than a comic book, but is it? I've read many silly books in my life, and the fact that they weren't comic books didn't make them any better.
Comics can be light reading that we welcome when we don't want to get into anything deep, just some relax time.
THey can be fun and witty and worth keeping.
But they are never just for kids. We don't always want to enter into the great american novel mood, sometimes we just want to relax and read something light:)

If I had to choose between reading a novel with pics or one without pics...I'd go without..BUT I enjoy comics and graphic novels as well..I'm a HUGE JtHM, Lenore, Fallen Angel fan as well as Calvin & Hobbes, and the like.....
keep in mind though I'm also the type of woman/person who doesnt think that anything entertaining is solely for one age or another (within reason of course)....I mean ppl think that playing in the park is something only kids should do but I highly disagree..I LOVE playing in the park! and I'm in my mid/late 30s LOL

Comics are definitely not always for kids! The comics section of the newspaper is the first thing I read each morning, and some, like "Doonesbury" address subjects that are over most kids heads (younger kids, at least). A lot of TV cartoons are not for kids, either. I have noticed "South Park" books in the kids book sections in some stores, and this one is definitely not for children (or anyone else, as their disclaimer says!) I don't think there is anything wrong with you if you enjoy reading literature with illustrations! Tell your friend to MYOB!

"Comics are for kids"......puh-leeze! For one, that's my favorite section of the newspaper. And for another, books with those kinds of illustrations are so much more entertaining, and at times the illustrations help to emphasize the words and make them easier to understand. So if liking comics makes one childish, then I am right there with you hon.

Ohhh...NO! NO! it's a big NO that comics are just for kids as I love reading comics myself! LOL! I actually am a fan of Archie Comics and I always buy them until now..my hubby would sometimes complain because I spent a lot just buying them! LOL! When i'm reading my archie comics i'm not to be disturbed! *smiles* and i'm not ashame to tell others that I still enjoy reading comics as I find joy in reading them..so what if i'm reading comics? you think I care what others think? nope. as long as i'm enjoying it! go!! thanks..

Not all comics are for kids. There are some comics for teenagers, older readers, and "adult" comics. I actually prefer normal books over comics, but I like comics too.

I was a comic book fanatic as a young person. I religiously read Superman, Superboy, Supergirl, Batman, and many others. I was totally hooked on them. As for a quick read for just a few minutes...nothing wrong with browsing the comic book instead of starting a novel you wouldn't get to finish.

No way. My husband loves comics and always have. He use to collect them when he was younger but ever since he moved around a lot he gave them away. He still buys some now and then.

To be honest, I quite shun comic books. I think they are for the illiterate. :P
But if you are talking about religious cartoons, I think the comic form is good. In fact, it might be better than the original form to help comprehension. :-)

anything that is for kids don't just remain for kids... can be also for adults... I'm glad you like comics... I mean is very very nice
I don't want to say something bad about your friend... but it's not ok to be judgmental... most of things that are for kids are nice stuff... especially a book...
I myself I'm not and never will be ashamed to read a book for kids... but, my dearest one is "Le petit prince" a very, very nice little book;)

That could not be more wrong. Most comic books nowadays, are not written for children, they are written for mature audiences. If you read most of what Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Top Cow, Arden, etc. print out, they are not at all for children. I read Marvel a lot on a monthly basis, and most of what is in their comics is pretty adult stuff. Like when Spider-Man bloody up Kingpin because Kingpin put his Aunt May in a coma, that was pretty heavy. I would not recommend that for children.

I think there is nothing wrong with enjoying a comic book. They're fun, and while they're meant to be enjoyed mostly by younger readers, there is no reason why a person of any age shouldn't enjoy them.

I would pick a wordy book before a comic book but don't believe that comics are only for children . My daughter had a whole series of the Archie comic books that she had recieved from her grandmother after her grandmother read them all and I remember sitting down to read them as well . They are cute and funny and it reminds of us all the things we enjoyed to do when we were younger and this was something we would have wanted to read back then .

I don't think comics are just for kids. My brother is in his early thirty's and he still love comic books. He started collecting them since we were kids and he still does until now. He got hundreds of comics now and he even started downloading them online. He loves to draw and the illustrations in the comics inspire him.
