I bought a "Engin" brand voice box to use for VOIP. It said that you could just plug it in and go, using your existing telephone system. I had a world of trouble setting it up with my Siemens Speedstream Modem, so ended up ringing a guy at "Engin" who told me to pick up the handset connected to the voice box, press * 4 times, so ****, and tell him what was on the other end. I did all this, and we got it going. The only problem was that it was a different number associated with the "Engin" voice box. The guy on the phone said, "What's wrong with that? You are just sending out a different number." I then found out that I would have to have a phone connected to the voice box for making calls, and another for receiving calls as the voice box cannot accept calls on my standard number. So, I rang "Engin" from the voice box phone connection, and it was the crappiest telephone connection I have ever had. I explained to them that this was not ok after all, and I needed to do something about it. They told me I could buy a voice box 3102 for $30 through them (if I signed up for 12 months). I said it sounded good, and to send it out to me. I would return the other one to the store where I bought it from. I have set it up, but it is still a major pain in the neck, as the number which is sent is not my standard one. This means that if I ring people, they will not automatically know it is me ringing, as the number is not my standard one. I am thinking about sending this voice box back, as I have it on a 30 day trial period. What would be the best way to get VOIP, and is it really worth it? I was thinking the calls would be a lot cheaper, and they are, but only if you spend a certain amount. We need to sign up under the business plan, so we don't get as many free calls as a residential plan does. However, if we don't sign up under a business plan, and they find out later on we are a business, we can be in all sorts of strife. All ideas gratefully accepted.
