At what age should a child know how to tie shoes?

I have 4 small kids at home 3 of which are going to start school tomorrow. My 8 and 7 year olds know how to tie there shoes. But my 5 year old does not know how to it. I have been trying to teach her but she gets so upset with herself at times. So I do not try to hard. I found out toda that she will need to know how to tie her shoes before she passes Kindergarten. I have no problem with that really I guess she has to learn some time rgiht.? But I was just wondering what most people think is a proper age to learn how to tie shoes?

I hate to say - my son was in first grade and would not tie his shoes. I don't know why...Think he was used to having all the girls (mom, teachers) do it for him. He could have cared less...

I didn't relize they had to be able to tie their shoes to pass kindergarten! My daughter learned when she was in pre-K so when she was 4. Some kids in her class taught her how to do it, I had not even tried to teach her!! So I was thankful for the kids showing her =) I get frusterated really easily so I probably wouldn't have been much good at helping her. I would say around 5 kids should be able to, but my son it two and I am pretty sure he won't be interested in learning anything when he is 5!!

My kids learned in kindergarten if I remember right - if your little one is getting stressed out over it buy her velcro shoes. When she is ready to tie her shoes she will. Hopefully the teacher won't put pressure on her because that could make it even harder for her.

My son is going 6 on dec. but unfortunately he still need to assist in everything he do, even in organizing his toys or if he want to chose which one to play he still need people around him to get it for him. And most of all he still not know how to wear shirts, but he know wearing shorts so far. Even eating foods during dinner or lunch he still want me to feed him or cut into pieces his fried chicken or any kind of viand that he think hard to bite. Im not pushing him to learn all things that he dont know maybe time will come that he himself can learn all that, at least know he is still a baby and need our attention we always there for him. Coz when he grow up and know how to fix things with his own I am sure that he wont call me anymore to help him.

I'm glad the shoe-tying requirement wasn't in place at the kindergarten I attended. I would have been a year or two behind. I do believe 6 or 7 years is a proper age, though, both as a basic advancement and to avoid teasing from the other kids (Yes, that happened to me :(... )

It all depends on the kid and really I doubt anyone should or could set an age...for example my lil bro with autism, probably not going to learn as fast.

My son is 7 now and we've been at it for the past 1.5 years. He just about manages to tie his shoe laces now. If we are running late, I just end up doing it for him (I don't want to drive him to school after he misses the bus). All the best. I'm sure she'll learn to do it at her own pace. Just keep trying.

I learned when I was 5. My 8 year old cousin taught me. I don't think there is a proper age, but I think most kids need to learn to do it themselves, because otherwise how will they change shoes for PE and stuff like that?

I am also trying to teach my 5 year old and he gets frustrated and gives up too easily as well. I'll keep at it though and try to be more patient.

Well all of my girls went to Head start from age 3. They went for 2 yrs before they started Kindergarten. And all of them knew how to tie their shoes by then. But My nephew is 5 and in kindergaten and he still hasn't learned how to tie his shoes. I guess it depends on the child and when they are ready to learn. Just keep trying to get her to tie her shoe and make it fun for her and she will get it. Good Luck..

I would say between the age of 5 and 6. Have you tried the butterfly method of tying shoes? I rememebr that was how my mom taught me and I learned quick. I can still remember learning to tie my shoes and I was 5 years old. Over 40 years ago.

i think the child should learn tieing shoes at the age of 6. now a days kindergarten going childs will not have shoes with lace instead will have straps. which can be closed and opened easily. my son is 5 year old and in his school next year onwards lace shows will be introduces, i am sure by then he would have learnt to tie the shoes.

So I want to tell you don't worry about your daught, she will be good when she at some age.

My daughter was supposed to know how to tie her shoes before she left kindergarten - she is now in 1st grade and still doesn't know how to tie her shoes. She tries - but ends up just making knots. I know that I learned to tie my shoes by the time I was in 1st grade. She will get very frustrated when we try to teach her how to tie her shoes...anyone have any tips on how to easily teach then how to do this? I think a proper age is around 1st grade...hopefully my daughter will learn sometime this year. =) Good luck with your 5 year old!!

I think it varies with each child. I really dont agree with people who say that this age or that age kids must do certain things. Some are more able at one age than others. My older daughter was not very good at tying her shoes before kindergarten, but she could read. My younger ones could not do either. I would say that probably around 5-6 most kids have the dexterity to learn to tie shoes but not all do.

My parents had problems teaching me to tie my shoes too. From what I recall, it was required in order to start school. I was almost 5 at the time. My daughter didn't get to start school until she was 6 so she also had a little extra time to learn this task. Best of Luck!
