How many hours sleep do you need?

United States

Most nights I only sleep 5-6 hours...my hubby does his sleeping in 2-3 hour intervals....my 30 yr. old daughter usually needs 10+ hours sleep to feel good...my 5 yr. old needs 7-8 hours in order to not be cranky.... This got me to wondering how the rest of the world sleeps??? If we were a fairly normal family where sleep is concerned..... So how about you?? How many hours sleep do you need??

I need more than I"m getting. lol I was getting 5-6 hours and that hasn't been enough. Now I go to bed earlier and try to get 7-8. My 5 year old needs at least 7-8 or else she's cranky. My 9 month old gets 10.5 hours sleep right now at night plus a couple of naps during the day. My husband probably needs 24 hours to be happy. lol. He stays up too late and only gets about 5-6 hours and he needs more.

My sleeping timings and time both depend on the kind of work i have done during the day. Someimes when i have done really hectic work at my office i then simply go to sleep soon after having dinner, on other occasions i would spend a good time with my daughters before going to sleep. Actually it is necessary to sleep enough so that one is fresh for the coming day.

Having runaway from home at 13 and working with carnivals and circuses for many years I was used to sleeping maybe 2 to 5 hours if I was lucky. Now at 53 I am still like that. I sleep 4 or 5 hours nightly. If I sleep any longer I get overtied and cranky as hell. Nothing worse than a cranky Grandpa Bob. HAHAHA! Well not really but... HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Sleeping is actually a biological cycle.we call it the biological clock.wherever we are,we feel sleepy when day changes to night.duration of sleep depends according to needs of the body.we automatically get up after the sufficient sleep we get.but if we dont take the required sleep, that is,if someone awakes us,we will be feeling sleepy whatever we do.in japan, there is a saying which goes like this,a person will succeed if he sleeps for 5 hours and will fail if he sleeps more than 6 hours.

i used to complete my 8 hours sleep everyday. now with the stressful requirements of my work and tasks in the office, and for me going from night to morning shift, i would be lucky to have 5 hours sleep everyday! :( that should be okay actually but i think i need more time to sleep.

I usually go to bed around 11pm and get up about 6am and I take a nape for about 2-3 hours during the day. When I'm stressed out I sleep even more. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I sleep around 7-8 hours most nights, and that is usually enough for me. My fiance sleeps somewhere between 3-6 hours a night, and he seems to do okay with that, though he will occasionally take a nap in the afternoon, when he doesn't have to be at school or work.

A person that wants to be successful will have to sleep for an average of 6 hours daily, anything higher than that is term as laziness. though, there are times when you sleep in the day time, that time is not in the 6 hours. a little, sleep a little slumber so that you will not be strickened by poverty.

I sleep 7 -8 hours each day. Although sometimes I feel too much time is spent on sleeping. Anyway, this differ from person to another person, a hard labour worker surely need more rest compared to a student. Anyway, check out this article in Yahoo regarding Junk sleeps in teens: Are Your Teens Getting Junk Sleep? http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/devlin/14808

Well I need at least seven hours or more. I get cranky too when I don't get enough sleep and often end up having a headache later on in the day. Lately I have been going to bed around the same time my son goes to bed (8-9)and then waking up around 6ish to get my hubby up and make breaky and send him off to work. It's been great doing it this way because then I have a little "me time" before our guests wake up, which isn't usually till after 9am or sometimes 10am. They are night owls as opposed to us being day owls LOL

Like you, I usually sleep about 5 or 6 hours a night. I have been doing this for many years now, so I am used to it already. My wife is a teacher, so she has to wake up at 6 am in the morning on weekdays. I will usually wake up and have breakfast with her before she goes off, so whatever time I sleep the night before, I still wake up at 6am except for the weekends. So if something keeps me awake and I only sleep at 2am, then I will only get 4 hours of sleep for that night. The good thing is once I lay down on bed and close my eyes, I usually sleep very well without interruption from dreams, noise or rain.

I don't pay much attention to it while I type. It's there just for the noise. I forget to turn the tv off a lot when I go to sleep which is usually around 1 AM. I want to be sometimes.I sleep to much in the daytime.I don't stay up till until 3 or 4 though maybe 1 or 2.

i think 6 hours is fair enough for all ages, but u should turn the lights off, think about something good before u sleep, promise yourself with something good when u wake up. good things like hot short bath, nice breakfast, calling somebody to say good morning. all these simple things will motivate ur brain to wake up & also u r gonna have a very useful 6 hours of a sleep. Don't u agree with me?

Basically it depends on how much your body has been strained. if you have worked a lot in a day you will surely have a sound sleep for about 6-7hrs to make you fresh and happy without any stress the next day. oversleepin makes you lazy! whereas less sleep affects your body and mind!! i suggest 6-7hrs of sleep is ideal for the body, mind and soul.
