Dear friends, you would agree with me that it is always easier for us to laugh at others on their silly mistakes, but it is a bit difficult to laugh at ourselves. Do you mind laughing at yourself and making fun of yours in front of your near and dear ones? Can you recall any such incidence? Would like to know about your thoughts and experiences on this issue. Thanks in advance.

I have consciously made it a habit of laughing at myself in front of others and sharing jokes about myself with others. You see, in my adolescence, I was a very shy introvert child whom no one took seriously. Whenever I made any attempts to communicate, my efforts were obviously inadequate (which I didn’t understand at that time) and people either laughed at me or ignored me. Then gradually I noticed that instead of sitting in a corner and sulking, if I joined the group, appreciated their stories and shared something stupid about myself, I was better accepted. It was as if I was ‘normal’. I realized that most of us are so full of importance about ourselves, we seldom seek to find out the lighter side of us and share it with others. As adults, we forget that it is natural to make mistakes and not all of us are handsome hunks and beautiful babes. It has become a habit with me now, I always share my follies, laugh at them with others and joke about my appearance. And most surprising part is that I actually enjoy doing so and harbour no resentment. It is as if once I could joke about myself, I was free from any sense of false vanity and ego which tied me down and prevented me from enjoying life openly with others.

Thanks very much for writing such a elaborative and beautiful reply. It is great that you have come to know how to laught at yourself....:):), which you did not know earlier. It is good that you are bold enough to share your silly mistakes amongst your friends. I think once we understand that we have committed any wrong, we should laugh and enjoy and in the process we can keep away our tension. I can make fun of myself...amongst my friends and make them laugh and laugh...... Have a nice day! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ rated.

I still remember an incidence happened many years ago. Walking out from a coffee shop after having our breakfast we approached to our car and straight away opened the door with a key. When I was about to sit down I found that it was not my car but of the same color and model. I quickly sprang out of it and found that the car plate was not my car number. I locked the door immediately as I scared of being suspected of car breaking in. We then moved to a distance and then couldn’t help laughing loud at each other. This really teaches me a lesson as always to observe carefully before we move and not to take things for granted straight away.

LOL I actually laugh when I'd imagined you being on the act as if it is your own car.(laugh) And then what if there is another car who bumped "your" car, I imagine that you could of get out of the car and slam "your" car's door and yiel out to the man who drive the car who bump "your" car. And you're like "hey jerk! what have you done to my car!" and then the real owner of the car may see you and say "what are doing here on my car?"LOL It was just my imagination friend so don't worry.:D I also encounter such experiences like that. My friends and I went to a mall; I seen a guy who's smiling at me and waving his hand so I smiled and waved my hand to him too. As we gone nearer to him he looked like my friend though. So I was like "hey, I miss you! How you been?" while walking towards him. My friends thought that guy is a friend of mine so they smiled too coz the guy was amazingly handsome. And when we were a meter away from that guy I realized that he is not my friend and he was smiling at the girl at our back. So instead of changing my emotions I had walked faster yet still smiling to pass through that guy and laugh out loud after we passed through him. Yaiiikzzz I was to ashamed yet I handled it to laugh instead of feeling bad.LOL And my friends like "deity you're so crazy!"LOL We laugh out hard that time. Gosh! If that guy seen us, I could of been melting in front of him. :))

Deepak, I always try to laugh at myself, infact, I invite my friends to laugh at my follies. In this way not only can I overcome the severity of the mistake but also have fun out of it. I also implement this in normal day to day courses. As you know, I am bit short in height and before ppl can make fun of it i share my stories of how my height come in between smooth bus travelling or such practical problems that i face in daily life. Trust me, this dilutes the situation and try to take it in my stride. So, I am the kind who would have fun at myself with all others participating in it. Previously, things were different though. I used to get tense and annoyed in small small things. My boss used to tell me, Why I was being upset! Why do I get perturbed aT THEIR THOUGHTS, i AM NOT THE SERVANT of their thoughts!! This actually helped me a lot in the long run. Now, I am a different person. Thank you.

I laugh at myself often. It's good to laugh and lightens the atmosphere if you've done something drastic or silly. I don't have any difficulty with that, although I laugh at others too! :) Brightest Blessings.

yes I can laugh on myself. Infact sometimes I purposely act funny and make people laugh , I enjoy making fool of myself if it gives happiness to my dear ones. I think because of such a nature of mine, I am loved by everybody in my friends circle. I like simple living.....don't want to act snob and make people think that I am some bigshot.....I am outside what I am inside.....no double personality.

I actually find it easier to laugh at myself than at others. I think I'm just a bit over-sensitive and think it's quite mean to laugh at other people's silliness or mistakes and would much rather be the clown myself and laugh at myself than risk hurting someone's feelings. I will often say something like "excuse me, I'm having a blonde moment" or something like that which I know is offensive to blondes but all of the blondes I know are pretty chilled out about blonde jokes and often say things like that themselves. Even though one of my biggest bug bears or pet peeves is poor spelling and grammar I am very reluctant to tell people to their face that they should work on their typos - so often I've had to correct typos of my colleagues or seniors at work because I could not bear for a piece of work to go out with such awful mistakes in them in case others laughed at their ineptitude!

I always find more easy to laugh at myself than other people, specially when they are around.I worry for them,if they really like I laugh with them mistakes,if they will smile but from inside gonna fell bad and . So whenever I did things that make others laugh even if they aren't around many times I call (friends, brother )to tell them what I did and joke about me..... I never had problem with these.

OMG not only can I but it's a good thing as well, cause I would have exploded into a thousand pieces by now if I couldn't. I am clumsy and I am not joking. We use to live in a house with dark wood doors. Well at night I would get up in the dark house and go to the bathroom. I would close the bedroom door behind me out of habit, but on the way back unable to see for the dark and forgetting I shut it, I would run smack dab into the sucker. LOL, of course this never failed to be while hubby was a wake and got to laugh at me. I just giggle myself silly at myself and go on. I think I can say I laugh more at myself than anyone else.

Yes, I laugh at myself! My favorite incident was when my contractor and I would discuss the building of my country cottage. We we be in total agreement and suddenly I would change my mind - about 20 times a day! After it was all said and done and it actually was up and built, he would come over and visit with me and my neighbor and talk about changing my mind over and over and over and over again! Lots of fun! sunnywaters

Hi Deepak Yes I laugh at myself manytimes when I act like a fool .. It happens many times when I don't understand something and I interpret differently because of this .. and laterz I understood that I am a great fool. I many times laugh at myself whenever I think about my childhood days .. how innocent fool I was at that time.

Oh definitely I do laugh at my own silly mistakes too. I had made it a habit. If I am in front of my friend, I usually do laugh hard but if I am in front of whom I don't know ..I mean to public, I may just laugh a little to gain my confidence and my poise. LOl

Can You Laugh At Yourself? Yes, it used to be extremely difficult for me to laugh at myself - I was always ashamed and angry for my own silly mistakes and didn't want to address them. I would get very angry if someone made a light-hearted joke or remark about something silly that I had done. Now I can laugh at myself with ease, and often make fun of myself, because I am comfortable and happy with myself now, and I can identify with my flaws and mistakes with a positive attitude. I think it's very important for us to learn to laugh at ourselves and find amusement in the silly things we do, as well as others do, without feeling sad or upset. =D

At some case, I do laugh at myself especially to those silly things i've done. Infact I laugh often on my mistakes rather than other people's. I think thats the best way of looking to life. I don't want to laugh at others as I don't want other people laughing at me.

Yea i do that often. Sometimes if I commit mistakes I just laugh at myself and try to change what I've done. I love making faces that way it will be funnier for my loveones to see. At least this way Iwas able to hinder myself for feeling bad and make my loveones happy. I think it's easier that way. LOL

I agree it does seem easier to laugh at others rather than ourselves. I think part of this is because in many cases people don't let you forget it and if you have heard about something silly you did 20 years ago for the 500th time particularly if your family seems to bring it up in casual conversations with people you don't even know then there is some understanding as to why you find it hard to laugh at yourself in front of family. This didn't happen to me but it did happen to a friend of mine and she felt they weren't so much laughing with her as constantly putting her down. I think the other problem is that so much of what we laugh at isn't funny. For example many countries have a funniest home video show and many of those funny videos show people hurting themselves. Why is that funny? The last silly thing I did and shared with the family was putting my keys in the fridge. I was on the way out the door with 2 bags when I realised I had forgotten my lunch so I went back for it, then when I got to the door I realised I didn't know where my keys where, so I backtracked and found them sitting on the ledge of the fridge where my lunch had been.

Me, i can do that.Instead of feeling bad why not laugh at it, you have nothing to do now because it is already past. I do making faces with my dear family and friends, and they know me very well so they laugh at what i do. For me it is not difficult to laughed at myself because we are all not perfect we all made mistake so to less trouble some laught at it.

I can laugh at myself sometimes. Mistakes are good points it happens in. Like earlier today. I was trying to recycle cans and did not know one had coke in it. I dropped it since I was surprised at what was going on. Next thing I know I have a coke geyser going off. Cleaning that up was fun. But I laughed and smiled at the situation. It was actually refreshing.

I think it is more important to face the mistakes or silly activities made by ourselves, but it is difficult to do that.It is essier for us to know the bad side of others than ourselves.I had to be a people like that, but experences told me it is no good for that. Now i have learned to laugh at myself. It is helpful for all of us.
