If you knew of a commited crime would you call the ANONYMOUS Police number?

Netherlands
September 4, 2007 6:01pm CST
It's been for a while now that here in The Netherlands they have also an anonymous number for every city's police department. And why? Because people would not call and report who they are when they know of a committed crime in their area, or street, etc. people are afraid to do so without any guarantee that they wont be questioned, or called to the police station, or even called to come and testify in court. And of what might happen to them and their family afterwards, when it gets known all over the place who was the one telling it all to the police, thus, who was the traitor. For myself, I am not against it, or for it, and I wont be one of those that call, anonymousdly or not. Unless there are children that have been harmed in the crime, or animals. What about you MyLotters?

It's USUALLY ONLY the criminals that view someone as a traitor, or snitch as they're called here in the States, for reporting a crime. Criminals hate it when they get told on so they almost always come back on the one who did the telling. I have used the anonymous line to make a report because if you don't the lawyer for the criminal finds out who it was that turned their client in & they go after them in court, if it gets that far. If it doesn't go to court, the criminals "friends" do the dirty work. Just because somebody's in jail doesn't mean you're safe from repercussions from that person. If it's not done anonymously the criminal will find out who it was that turned them in. That's one of their rights.

I would call police imidiatelly if i knew of any crime that has happend. I don't understandt why u say that people in Netherlands would view anyone who reported a crime as traitor. It is normal not to support crime, and it doesn't matter what was the crime commited. It was CRIME!

Hi Linoxy, thanks for your responce in the discussion. And please read the replies I just gave above. You have misinterpreted what i wrote. I wouldn't be worried about what people in the city, or country will think, one is seen as a traitor by the criminals, and these are dangerous, so people were not calling the police, or not often enough until the anonymous numbers came in use. No one knows how criminals get the info who has called, but they mostly always do know. Even with the anonymous calls I am not sure it will remain a secret. This is where the discussion is all about.

Sorry. I don't know how anonym calls function. We do not have that kind of option to report crime in my country. I suppose if the number is for anonymous calls only than the police is protecting your info. I'm not saying that criminals would never get to that info. There is no guarantee in this world on anything.

Hi Linoxy, and no problem, and I am glad you understood my point in this :) and yes, there is no guarantee, so one always has to make the right choice, and it also depends what it is to report

I would probably call the police. I tend to take things back I forget to pay for, return money when I get too much change, tell the boss she paid me for too many hours, that type of thing.

Yes I would report it, and I would probably use the anonymous number too. Like you, I would be most moved to do something when it involves hurt caused to animals and children, but I truly don't see why vandalism/hooliganism/petty theft etc should go unpunished.

Police Department has rendered it roles to the public community and whatever sub-services available under their hand. And Police Department is only the enforcement unit to the bills of law that has been constituted by the Parliament. So now it depend on the public community attitude to support the services offered by police team. What I look here is the community that make a major role to enriched the enforcement elements to the Bills of Law. If the public community not well organized and weak in applying the neighborhood, mean that the community is vulnerable to the subjective crime cases. Because neighborhood is a chain of networking. My conclusion to your discussion, there must be a great leader in every locality as this security subject cannot be done by an individual as it needs the well organized community to support the administrative, managerial, operation and control. Thank You.

Hi Michael, and thank you for replying in this discussion :) What you say does make sense, however if it will be easily appliable in the current structures is an other thing. Also because the mentality of the people here will not be so easily changed.

Yup, it is too dangerous to tell about a crime you've seen. It threaten your life. Maybe you can tell it to the family of the victim if there's something you know about the crime.

It would have to depend on the crime that was commited . If I was in any way feared the safety of my family because of what I saw then I would call the anonymous number but if I wasn't in any fear of someone I loved getting hurt then I would just report it normally . I believe it is good to have a number individuals can call when they want to tell but are too scared because it does help the police out and gives them an area to work in where without the anonymous tip they could be working in the wrong direction and can help the person who is unsure about what to do when they want to help but fear what could happen if they were to tell what they knew .

I would definitely report it. I feel like if I'm doing what is right, God is going to take care of me. And if I were one of the people harmed, and no one called the police? I would be angry, hurt, and it would really destroy part of my belief in my fellow (wo)man.

Hi Ambiepam and thank you for replying in this discussion. The question was about crime in general, and especially the anonymous lines. And I guess no one will stay and watch (from his window, or wherever) that a woman has been asaulted without calling it in. Unfortunately where such things happen is usally far away from houses, and very few are able to see and report it.

if i directly witness the crime, i will definitely report it. but if it was just told to me by another person which would be considered hearsay i won't.

Thanks Tuffy999 for responding in this discussion. Yes, it definitely should be from having witnessed it yourself, as from hearsay doesn't count for me either

I would call the police If I knew that something was not right. In fact I have called the police few times 1 time a man was beating his wife with a metal stick in front of our house, my husband wasnt home I was alone with my mother and son, there was no way I was going to go help the lady (if it was a verbal abuse or not involving veapon I would have helped her) the lady was screaming so I called police I gave them all the info I was not woried about that at all. The police came while I was still on the phone but my mother who was watching the fight from the window told me that as soon as they heard the police coming they ran away. The police found them but she didnt want to press charges.

Hi Violeta_va, and thank you for responding in this discussion. What you just described is something that I will report myself if I see it happening here as well, most definitely so.

If I knew of a crime that had been committed, I would definitely contact the police. If I felt my life might be in danger by reporting, I would most likely use the anonymous line. We have them here where I live as well and I would rather be scared and report it anonymously than not report it at all and end up with a murderer/thief/rapist/etc. going around continuing his or her crimes. I would feel less safe knowing that. I understand that a lot of people fear retaliation on themselves or friends and families, so I think it's good to have these anonymous phone lines.
