Dystopia. Reality Now or Possibility Later?

Okay here is a discussion I do want to talk about or at least get some feedback on. (Worry not, I'll start the obvious counter discussion right after I get this one posted).
What do you think of dystopia? For those that don't know, dystopia is the opposite of utopia (a state of perfect or near-perfect society). Dystopia usually involves a lack of rights, freedom, safety and health. It also involves a government or governments of oppressive nature. It involves leaders and government oppressing others through said lack of rights, jail, concentration camps, executions. On the other side dystopia could involve a lack of basic resources needed for societal and/or human survival. This includes the destruction of cities, infrastructure, economic collapse, medical collapse, the severe lack of food/water/medical supplies.
Now the reason I bring this up (besides borderline psychopathy ;p), its two fold.
On one side, I've had dreams of being in a dystopia. Even a few where I'm executed. They are rare, but I've had them ever since I was a young kid (I guess thats what I get for reading above my grade level and actually comprehending it ;p). But now, in the present I do have fears a dystopia can occur in our lifetime or God forbid in our children's/grandchildren's lifetime. It does keep me up longer a few nights because its an intense thing to think about.
On the other side, I see many people complaining about the U.S. There are also some others complaining about other countries and world leaders in general. Some observe and criticize about other issues that could lead to dystopia in their own ways (war, economic issues, environment issues, medical issues, famine, education, and more) I'm pretty much in these camps but there is no gain in it for me, no profit, nothing! I criticize because I want things better for humanity overall, and with criticism I can also observe and note things that are good or at least aren't as screwed up as the other issues.
And now onto the main event! Thank you all for sticking with this if you are still here. What do you think about this, or any of the issues I mentioned. Has the thought of something like this, even remotely like this crossed your mind? If it has, feel free to stop by and share your thoughts. If not, you are still entitled to talk about these things or react to what I think. Even if its "Pro, you are in SERIOUS need of a vacation!" I'll even accept that! I know to let go and not let it overwhelm my thinking. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't have this in the back of my head.
I just want your thoughts and I want to see how this goes. Thanks for your time and attention.

I think there are some signs that we're moving towards a sort of Orwellian future but I don't think we're there yet. I guess I like to be one of those who stick their heads in the sand for the most part and don't think about it - preferring to think of other things - though that's not always true - sometimes I think of these things a lot - and armeggedon type things - wondering how people will react - if its slow - like I think it is here - will we just not realize our freedoms are being taken away until its too late - will we rise up and fight? I've started some threads on this topics including comparing things to Orwell's 1984 but no one really answers those. It seems my fluffy topics - although I'm just as curious about the answer to those to seem to be answered more readily.

I hope it doesn't happen that way. If it does, we may as well kiss the 2008 election good bye.

My thoughts exactly. Most people don't even realize that he's signed this and gone over congress' head. Too often its easier to bury our heads in the sand then face the truth thats right in front of us. I have friends though that are so pro Bush and pro war. I don't talk politics with them. I just listen as they talk angrily about their side. I will concede that I don't wish anyone I know to be in his place - anyone in presidency right now is in a difficult place with difficult decisions before them.

He may have gotten the year off but he's frightenly close! I never thought of that - supposedly not being able to track that but being able to tap our phone calls and such. There are those that believe 9/11 was staged by us. Another attack would be strategic as it would keep Bush in office as of what was it May? - Martial Law will be in effect if we have another terrorist attack or federal emergency.

Dystopia! What a unique discussion. I certainly would not say it could not happen.
Mao in China. Pol Pot and the Khemer Rouge. Both had their own dystopia for a period of time. Millions were killed. Infrastructure destroyed. Widespread famine from mismanagement. Disease ran rampent. Dystopia certainly can happen.
What these 2 cases of dystopia had in common are brutal leaders who knew with certainity in their own minds that they knew what was best. Best for everyone! Best for everything. Just do what they say and a utopia would be coming, or so they thought as they created their dystopia.
So, whenever political leaders try and force upon you what they say is good for you, in you own best interests, whether you like it or not, beware. That guy could just be another petty tyrant looking for his chance to remake society as he knows it should be. That guy could be unknowingly setting about to create another dystopia.

Well said! And thanks for the compliment, I wanted to think of a discussion besides "what's your favorite color". I wanted a little more than that.
Great point, we have had dystopias in the past and the present if one looks at the right places. Its very possible to have a dramatic dystopia situation in many of the 1st world countries, its just very slow for some to observe and for the rest its bread and circuses. Also your point on vigilance, I'll admit thats also part of what I was thinking when I posted this and the utopia discussion. Some of it is perspective based but there are instances where the masses are tricked into thinking their leaders are making things better when in actuality things are getting worse.
Thanks for stopping by!

Great discussion/topic to post on! I feel like our country is getting further and further away from being a true Democracy, and, like another person said, more Orwellian these days.
I worry about the future too. That's why I don't breed (as of yet). Wouldn't want to bring an innocent life into such a crazy world, ya know?

Again, my dear friend...your discussions are quite lengthy and probably get minus ratings! I can see you are well educated or know where to find great information. This is so long and involved I don't even know what to say about it....good luck!

Now i know what dystopia means. Well, here in my country "PHILIPPINES". We already suffered that called "dystopia. Before and until now:-(. Sad to say but we have nothing to do about it. We are belong to the third level or third world country.
Many of us right now working abroad. There are some of us here working in your country USA,canada, other asian countries like japan and singapore and to middle east. They were doing this because they want to provide the needs and wants of there family. Many of us here suffered on unemployment or no job. Actually me i am applying for canada right now and i am looking forward on it.
One foundations to have a great and nice country is to have a great leaders. And consistent of there responsibilities in giving a better future for there countryman. I know there are some of them are doing this but majority of them are not.
